Our starting guard also went out the play or two before.

I am not into analytics (although we did have stats back in the day) but to me it was the wrong call for one reason that I cannot remember anyone else mentioning. *(If someone did I apologize and will stand corrected.) Watch the game broadcast when Wilder called the timeout and our "O" goes to the sideline. Watch Smartt's reaction as Wilder tells them we are going for it. His body language is totally negative (he slumps) and it is clear he had no faith in the call at all. You have to know your kids and you have to look them in the eye and read their response to what you are asking them to do. I agree with much of the above but to me the biggest reason we should have punted is b/c the man who had to take charge and make the play work clearly had no faith in the plan/play. If the QB is not buying in punt the ball.

Aside from analytics, it is important that the coach have a feel on the pulse of the game. Up to that point, we were in the lead and UVA had not been able to put together a sustained drive on our defense. Why risk giving them the ball at our 29 yard line?

Going for it against Georgia Southern on 4th and 7 in a tie made more sense as our defense was gassed.

Excellent observation!
And unlike many of us lay people, your credentials are impeccable.
