Hampton @ Kent State
Kent State fans have plenty to look forward to this weekend. Obviously the Frisco Bowl will take center stage on Friday Night. Hopefully Flashfanatics will be celebrating a victory at Ray's while watching the Boca Raton Bowl or watching my favorite college football team, NDSU take care of Montana State before heading over to the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center to watch the Flashes take on the Hampton Pirates.
Hampton is 4-7 on the season and 0-5 in road games. After defeating Mid - Atlantic Christian and Newport News Apprentice School, the Pirates have fallen on rough times losing 7 of their last 9 games. Leading scorer Jermaine Marrow (24.9ppg) has not played in the last three games. I am not sure what is up with the 6'0 senior guard. But, 6'6 sophomore Ben Stanley seems to be picking up the slack on offense with a 20.9 ppg average.
The Pirates have some size in 6'10 Khiry Shelton (Columbus kid) and 7'0 sophomore Pierre Sow joining a bunch of 6'76'8 forwards in the rotation.
This is a big one for the Flashes as it wraps up the home portion of their non conference slate before the Mississippi State game on the 30th. I have always looked at 10 non conference wins as a benchmark for success. As it stands, Kent State, The University of Akron, Bowling Green State, Eastern Michigan and the sons of Toledo all have 8 or more wins.
After the Flashes saved my money market account in overtime earlier this week I can't help but to take the Flashes big on Saturday.
Kent State 80
Hampton 59.5
Peterson scores 19 and plays the last 8 minutes with 7 fouls.

After the two games in El Paso with the same crew of officials for both games. ( true, but should never happen) I have a new appreciation for officials we get at MAC center. Guys in El Paso should not be allowed to do Games for 6 year olds

Hampton needs to get into the weight room. The Flashes are just man-handling them.

Peterson had 1 point. I remember that in his first game as a freshman he had 17. I'm just curious, does anyone know of he ever topped that 17 points?

Agreed. First game I’ve been able to attend and couldn’t believe the physical difference between the two teams. Hampton’s #4 looked like he was wearing a Youth Medium.

For whatever reason he just never developed much of a game. Always a hustle guy, which is good, and capable of making a play when you least expect it ... but beyond that, a mystery.
He used to throw up a lot of floaters in the lane, but they were like his 3-pointers, hit or miss. Again, he has the size of a D1 player, and the 'moxie' but when it comes to tangible numbers, not so much.
The good thing is ... he has played on good teams, which make his intangibles and defensive versatility stand out. He would not get as much action on average, or bad teams.

Agree, scoring is not his greatest asset. Good court presence , always around the ball, good defense , gets a lot of key rebounds. And when you least expect it he hits a clutch shot. Never gets the headlines but key player on this team. He always helps the others . We need his 20 minutes nightly.

I have nothing at all against Mitch. He's a nice player to have on the team and he has won games for the team. I was only wondering if the 17 points he had in his college debut as a freshman is his career high? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 56 pints in his collegiate debut and I THINK that was his 2nd highest scoring total in his entire three year career (freshmen didn't play then).

Also, I noticed that Nalls didn't play. He was a preferred walk-on. I wonder if he is still around? I wasn't at the game.

That's not a garbage loss. Liberty is 14-0 and a top 25 team on the NET rankings.

Garbage loss?
Liberty(14-0, 12-0 vs. D1 opps) is currently NET #20 and getting votes in both polls. They might even be ranked in the next AP poll.
Edit: Oops. Didn't read down the thread far enough before I posted.

Liberty is 14-0 but I read an article absolutely crushing them for their schedule. They have played a trash schedule.

I would take their schedule over Duquesne ... take a look at that one ... yowza!!!
Dukes have played just one team so far with a winning record (Indiana State) ... Liberty has played four.

Liberty has beaten East Carolina,Towson,Vanderbilt , with LSU still to come. Nothing terrible about that. Last year they beat us and UCLA both on the road. As for Kent I would not call loss to UC Irvine garbage. They are picked to win their league . Won 30 games last year and beat Kansas St in Tourney. Clearly they played better at Sun Bowl than early in season. Loss to UTEP was caused by homer refs, and UTEP had only lost once to that point.

RE: Hampton @ Kent State
I was at Kent State-Hampton, and I couldn't see much of what caused the Ts. I later watched the replay of Kent State-Hampton on ESPN+, and with that spate of technical fouls in there, that team was whack. The coach was trying to talk one of the players down off the ledge, at another point, two Hampton players looked like they were going to start throwing punches at each other,
#14 [Benjamin Stanley] (who caught Pippen's elbow in the nose). #4 [Heckstall] was upset at something; he went over and grabbed #14's jersey and got in his face over something. I couldn't see what ticked #3 [Shelton] off when he started pushing Williamson - it looked like normal Division I level contact Williamson's part - I don't see what earned Williamson a T.
And shortly after Williamson's T, Heckstall left the bench and went to the locker - heading out the long way through the Southeast exit, rather than the Northeast exit the visitors usuallyu leave by. When Heckstall was on the bench after Stanley got in his face, I thought he was going to start crying
