WBB Games 9-11: The Inaugural Anne Donovan Classic
The Inaugural Anne Donovan Classic. Four teams, six games, three days. Will the Monarchs wear there special "throw back" jerseys in honor of Donovan for the entire series? Coach Nikki has been selling this one to the fans. My only question is...why is the first game scheduled at 5:00 for Thursday and Friday? Scheduling ODU to go first at 5 makes some sense in that fact that you will have your biggest crowd in the opener and you hope that they stay for the night game. It probably makes managing the game a little easier for the people who work in the building. But for people who work, it will offer a challenge in getting to the game. Especially if they have to pick up family members before the game starts. It's an odd time that may not be great for everyone. I am glad however that we are doing something to honor Anne's legacy with ODU.

The day Anne signed with ODU was one of the defining moments of this program's history. Everything she did was an impact for future generations to follow. For players and fans a like.

Game one will be the Spiders of Richmond. The last time we meet was in Nikki's first year as head coach. We lost 45-54 at home. This year the Spiders have a new headcoach in Aaron Roussell. Roussell comes from the Patriot League where he coached Bucknell Bisons to a 102-30 record, including 64-8 in the conference. He takes over a team with 3 freshman, so lots of experience. And they won 9 games last year, this year they have already won six. Roussell can coach and he is going to be scary when he gets all the players he wants.

Richmond's schedule so far. They are 6-4 with an RPI of 48 and SOS of 34
@ UNC Greensbroro W 70-62 Record: 5-5 RPI: 181
@ Charlotte L 59-78 Record: 7-2 RPI: 44
@ Georgetown W 51-49 Record: 2-8 RPI: 242
Vs Florida Atlantic W 57-55 Record: 6-3 RPI: 131
Vs W&M W 76-73 Record: 7-2 RPI: 160
@ Drexel L 52-58 Record: 6-4 RPI: 62
@ Coastal Carolina W 79-67 Record: 6-1 RPI: 157
Vs Bradley L 57-61 Record: 7-1 RPI: 51
@ MDES W 64-52 Record: 2-7 RPI: 243
Vs Furman L 69-70 Record: 5-4 RPI: 107
@ ODU Record: 7-2 RPI: 67

With the exception of the Charlotte game, all of Richmond's loses have been decided by 1, 4, and 6 points. Proving that his teams are in it to the end.

Spiders Starting Five
24 Klimkiewicz, Kate G 6'0" So 11.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.6 spg, 45.8 FG%, 35.7 3P%, 76.7 FT%, 30.7 mpg
01 Hinds-Clarke, Jaide F 6'1" Sr 11.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.8 apg, 2.4 spg, 40.9 FG%, 20.0 3P%, 59.1 FT%, 24.9 mpg
12 Holt, Claire G 5'7" So 6.8 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.6 apg, 42.9 FG%, 38.2 3P% 76.5 FT%, 21.2 mpg
13 Parson, Alex G 5'6" Jr 7.6 ppg, 2,4 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.1 spg, 35.2 FG%, 34.5 3P%, 69.6 FT%, 27.8 mpg
15 Squires, Emma F 6'2" So 9.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.0 apg, 45.8 FG%, 37.0 3P%, 78.9 FT%, 23.7 mpg
Top Bench
31 Elaina Chapman F 6'3" Fr 5.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 0.5 apg, 41.3 FG%, 33.3 3P%, 750 FT%, 18.0 mpg
33 Amy Duggan G 6'0" Sr 2.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.6 apg, 41.2 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 75.0 FT%, 10.6 mpg

This entire team can shoot the three ball. However some shoot it more often than not. For example, #12 Clair Holt shoots it beyond the arc 75% of the time, leading scorer 24 Kate Klimkiewicz, over half her shots are from beyond the arc. As a team they are good at shooting free throws (72.1 %). They still have some ball control issues and they are more of an offensive minded team than a defensive one. Fun to watch though.

This will be a good team to play after ODU's hiccup against VCU. We have to start off start with a confidence booster If not for themselves, then do it for Anne. Also the men's basketball team is playing Richmond tonight and it would nice to get a sweep on our home floor. (you can tell at the time of this writing, game is still on...)

Also. Somebody asked me if ODU has ever hosted a tournament during the regular season? During the playoffs, of course. But I don't know if any tournament has been held here or if this is truly a first.

The Dial Classic was held in Norfolk in from 1995-96 to 1997-98. Also had the preseason WNIT in 1996-97. Before that the Optimist Classic 1978-79 to 1985-86 and the Reebok Roundball Classic from 1986-87 to 1988-89.

Only 4 combined losses in all of those (all per the Media Guide)

I too wish ODU was not playing the 5 p.m. game. Too early for a big crowd...but i’ll be happy to be wrong. Good luck Monarchs.

Except it's the first game of the day so there's nothing to delay it.

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation as to why the home team is playing right after work lets out. Search me as to what it is, tho.

RE: WBB Games 9-11: The Inaugural Anne Donovan Classic
So ODU wins game one of the tournament 73-51. It's important to note that seven members of our bench were in double digits as far as minutes played goes. Nikki did a good job of rotating people in and out. That will keep the starters fresh for the three game tournament. So good job of player management.

The Pirates are still coached by David Six, entering his 11th season at the helm. After years of playing excellent ball in the MEAC, Hampton Univeristy joined the Big South Conference last season. The Pirates went 16-14 (12-6) last year. All time we are 6-1 against the Pirates. Oddly enough, the last time we played them though we lost 42-50 in an away game in Jan of 2018.

This season the Pirates are 2-4. They have an RPI of 249 and a SOS of 218.

@ Alabama W 64-61 Record: 8-3 RPI: 72
@ Chattanooga W 84-55 Record: 1-11 RPI: 284
Vs Florida Atlantic L 63-64 Record: 6-3 RPI: 130
@ Furman L 65-70 Record: 5-4 RPI: 102
Vs Norfolk St L 56-77 Record: 5-5 RPI: 224
Vs Liberty L 59-83 Record: 4-6 RPI: 196

I don't understand how this team beats Alabama on the road but then loses to Norfolk St at home. Puzzling.

Pirates Starting Five
01 Vanarsdale, Laren G 5'3" So 16.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.5 apg, 18 apg, 39.8 FG%, 35.7 3P%, 83.3 FT%, 39.2 mpg
02 Timmons, MaKayla G 5'7" Grad 14.3 ppg, 30 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.3 spg, 42.7 FG%, 38.9 3P%, 57.1 FT%, 35.7 mpg
20 Young, Nylah F 5'10" Fr 7.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 0.0 apg, 25.7 FG%, 30.8 3P%, 75.0 FT%, 24.3 mpg
14 Bates, Ashley G 5'7" Sr 14.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.7 apg, 4.3 spg, 50.0 FG%, 40.0 3P%, 61.8 FT%, 35.2 mpg
23 Amechi, Mercy C 6'3" Sr 1.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.0 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.000 FG%, 0.000 3P%, 0.000 FT%, 14.5 mpg
Top Bench
00 Jenkins, Charlisa C 6'2" Rd Sr 6.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 0.0 apg, 1.2 spg, 42.9 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 72.7 FT%, 24.2 mpg
33 Chakolis, Dlayla G 5'7" Fr 2.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 0.5 apg, 25.0 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 33.3 FT%, 21.5 mpg

Of course MaKayla Timmons is an ODU grad. Nylah Young is fron Suffolk, King's Fork High School

On defense, look for them to trap the ball for the steal. On offense. Laren Vanarsdale was the Rookie of the Year last season for the Big South Conference. She leads the way and she is pretty good on inside and outside. Timmons has found good success for Hampton, putting better numbers than she did at ODU. It will be interesting to watch how she is defended since these are the same players she played against on the practice courts. Coach Larry...as great as she was...used to have thing where anytime a former player came back (or worse, a player who was going to sign with us but didn't)....she would make sure that player didn't score against ODU. It was part of there team goal. It will be interesting to see how Nikki chooses to line up her defense against her.

Ast/TO radio:
Hampton: 0.6, ODU: 0.7

Hopefully the attendance will be better since these are the local schools playing. Honestly if you get rid of Hampton's win over Alabama, their overall team record isn't that great. Coach Larry famously said, "weird things can happen on opening day".

Thank you devyanks90. The Dialer Classic. As time goes bye, it's easy to forget sometimes.

Lady Monarchs came out hot and looked good most of the game. The early energy allowed them to cruise to a 73 to 51 win over Richmond. The best news, the coach was standing most of the game. She played a deep bench, 12 Monarchs played, eight scored 6 or more points. We should be well rested.

Noticed also that Coach Nikki stood most of the game. Players seemed to be more engaged when the coach is more engaged. These games are very important to the fans and the coach. Hope the team wins tonight in impressive fashion.

Not sure about the Ladies, but "back in the day" the Men hosted the ODU/Kiwanis Christmas Classic. One year we had Michigan, Michigan State (Magic Johnson!), ODU and a 4th team. Great event at Scope in it's day!

The men hosted a tournament back in about 2006, called the Cox Classic. We lost to Clemson it it, I think. Don't remember the other teams.

They also hosted a four-team round robin thing to start the 5-25 season, the Liberty Tax Classic. Lost to Holy Cross and, in a harbinger of bad things with this team, UTSA. Beat Morgan State for the only non-Cavaliers win of the year under Taylor.

Timmons seemed frustrated tonight against us when she fouled out, but I wish her success at Hampton

Did anyone notice Blagmon wasn’t on bench? Is she sick something is going around ?

Noticed same re Blagmon. She wasn’t mentioned on radio. Usually announcers say something about those not playing. Didn’t see anything on website either..

RE: WBB Games 9-11: The Inaugural Anne Donovan Classic
The final game of the classic is ODU vs Mount St. Mary's University. This is the first time that these two teams will ever play. The campus is located on 1,400 acres of rural mountain setting. It's is a private liberal arts school located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Mount St Mary Mountaineer's are a member of the Northeast Conference. This preseason they were picked to finish 3rd in their conference. The Mountaineer's are coached by Maria Marchesano in her 3rd season. She is a graduate of Butler university, where she played four years of basketball and one year of softball. She actually played both sports overseas after college.

Mount St Mary's schedule so far. Record: 3-6 RPI: 280 SOS: 285

@ Kentucky L 44-67 Record: 10-1 RPI: 50
@ Indiana L 52-75 Record: 10-1 RPI: 10
@ Towson L 57-73 Record: 3-6 RPI: 266
Vs UMBC W 71-61 Record: 2-7 RPI: 333
@ Radford W 75-58 Record: 2-6 RPI: 298
Vs Loyola (MD) W 81-75 Record: 1-8 RPI: 289
Vs Lehigh L 65-66 Record: 6-2 RPI: 113
@ MDES L 76-78 Record: 2-8 RPI: 275
@ Hampton L 60-68 Record: 3-4 RPI: 233
@ ODU Record: 8-2 RPI: 57

No standout wins.

The Mount's Starting Five

03 Bresee, Kendall G/F 5'10" Rd Jr 13.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.3 spg, 38.8 FG%, 34.1 3P%, 79.3 FT5, 30.8 mpg
04 Settle, Jatarrikah G/F 5'9" Jr 10.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.6 spg, 39.8 FG%, 34.6 3P%, 73.3 FT%, 31.9 mpg
10 Harrison, Michaela G 5'7" So 10.8 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 0.8 apg, 36.1 FG%, 30.5 3P%, 69.2 FT%, 32.6 mpg
11 Birkhead, Bridget G 5'11" Jr 9.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.9 apg, 1.2 spg, 42.6 FG%, 42.9 3P%, 89.5 FT%, 21.1 mpg
34 Lee, Rebecca C 6'2" Jr 6.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.6 bpg, 44.0 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 65.4 FT%, 20.3 mpg
Top Bench
25 Addison, Taylor F 5'10" So 5.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.1 apg, 58.5 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 70.0 FT%, 16.7 mpg
22 Connors, Delaney G/F 5'9" So 2.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.6 apg, 55.6 FG%, 50.0 3P%, 100.00 FT%, 8.1 mpg

Let's get this out of the way. They like to shoot the three ball. They love to shoot the three ball. They average 9.1 3's a game, which ties them for 15th in the nation. Their 272 three point attempts places them 21 in the nation. Who do you guard? All the team's starters and Addison are threats to hit it beyond the arc. They are a 73.4 from the free throw line and they shot a nice 40.2 percent from the floor. From the offensive side of the ball, they are strong. They are not great rebounders, they turn the ball over 20 times a game, and they aren't strong defensively.

But they are fun to watch if you like threeball.

Third game of the series. This is why it's important to have a strong bench. This game could turn into a battle of three's, which might be a lot of fun to watch. It would be nice to see the Monarchs finish strong. And since the game starts at 2, hopefully the attendance will be better than it has been. (really don't like the 5 o'clock starting time. Hope that doesn't become a regular thing)
