RE: ODU vs Richmond
Remember when JJ took over the team and said he was going to stop recruiting guys that can't shoot the basketball (obvious shot at Blaine Taylor)? Sticks out vividly in my mind, especially when I watch games like last night. The offense is brutal to watch.

Wow, he really said that? Guys who can't shoot:

- Dickens
- AC
- Wade
- Reece
- Ezikpe

Guys who can shoot:

- Oliver
- Green
- Curry (?)
- Godwin

Unknowns:
- Pilavios
- Karaiskos
- Hunter

When JJ first came here, he was asked at an ODAF function about our center, Painter, and would we get another big of his caliber. He rolled his eyes and said "Painter?? I plan on getting much better big guys than Painter" 07-coffee3

We are going to have to improve quickly for conference play.

Our defense is adequate.

However, on offense:
We are 27.8% from three. Opposing teams will not have to worry about contesting the long shot, so they can just sag in and wait.
Since we don't have a true PG or a dominant big, we are limited in what we can do to get it inside, and then to score.
Our FG % for the season is a 39.2.
Even worse, especially from an historic ODU perspective, we are not even scoring well on offensive put-backs.
FT% is 65.5, near our usual suckage on that stat.

So, I actually think JJ coached a really good game last night. We had no business being in that game, but I thought his coaching gave us a chance.

With that said, I really wish he was not so "old school" at times. The number of mid-range jump shots we take makes my eyes bleed. I can't believe we run so many sets where that seems to be the goal. Also, it's 2019, was there any thought given to the idea of potentially going 2-for-1 at the end. We had the ball with 50 seconds to go. A quick set might get us two possessions instead of one that resulted in Oliver tripping and throwing something at the rim.

Of the guys you listed who can shoot, Oliver is the only one I would say can shoot in the context of the entirety of college basketball. I believe the other are just good shooter for a JJ team, but would be among the worst shooting guards on many of our opponents' teams.

On that note, another thing that drove me mad last night is that we did not once try to attack their press. We let them do exactly what they wanted to do, eat up 15 seconds before we could get into our offensive sets.

I mentioned in an earlier post my concern about Greene running point so much in the firdt half. Curry played more in the second half and we had better luck. Anyone else bothered about Greene at point or is it just me?

Until we have a better option, I don't mind it. Curry is good in spurts and really not good in other spurts.

I was more bothered by the fact that we didn't try to post Green up a single time when he was being guarded by Gilyard or Francis.

Actually we did attack once and Wade drove the length of the court for a layup. But I agree with you. I was yelling all night for us to attack that press. Most college teams struggle in the half court sets but we seem to be even worse than most. Curry is perplexing to me. At times he is very timid, slow to move the ball around. Other times he is the aggressor and good things usually happen.

I don’t have any problem with Greene running the point because it gives Jones a chance to play Greene, Godwin, and Oliver at the same time. I know Godwin has not shot the ball well at all but he is a threat to get going and keep the defense honest. Let’s face it, we are not going to push the ball against a press anyway and Greene can get us into the offense as well or better than Curry. It opened up some good scoring opportunities for Greene last night.

RE: ODU vs Richmond
Was anyone actually surprised that when UR got the ball with 12 seconds left that they were going to win? As soon as that happened I told my wife "they're going to hit a shot with about 2 seconds to go and we'll lose". I just hate seeing guys that cant shoot every year. Its got to be more than coincidence at this point. There is something to Jeff's style that turns decent shooters into shot missers. That said, I also remember when BT was let go that Wood (the master of over-selling and under delivering) said he was going to hire a coach that excelled at exciting, fast paced, high scoring basketball. Id say JJ is the opposite of all three of those. And I can live with that as long as we're winning. But when we have to sit through slow, ugly, low scoring games and still lose, it becomes close to unbearable.

Yes, no surprise that Golden hit the shot. Well, I didn't know it would be him but I figured someone would. I was more surprised we were tied actually. Richmond just looks better than we do.

Man, I can't fathom how far off I was in pre-season. I figured we would win 23-25 games. BUT, I WAS WRONG.

Besides the fact we have poor ball handlers, below average foul shooters, weak inside game, weak point guard play and we can't shoot, how did I go wrong!

Posting up is a pretty ineffecient shot, but Im assuming that is not something Green does often (cant remember him posting up anyone).

What drove me mad late in the game is we ran a decent set for Green, he received the ball behind the arc with space to shoot and instead dribbled just inside the arc and took a contested shot. He loves long 2s.

At least when BT had guys that couldn't shoot, he knew it, and had tall guys inside ready to get the offensive rebound and who could hit bunnies. Our guys miss bunnies and layups too.

We have been thinking Godwin is a threat to get going for a long time now. He really has yet to get going. Relying on Godwin to provide offense is fools gold at this point, and that reliance is part of why this team has been so bad offensively.

Bought the hype on the recruiting class and Jeff Jones the improved recruiter.

Yep, he is looking more and more like a bust. At this point I doubt he ever gets going aside from a random decent game once in awhile.
