Someone please explain to me the boner that AAC folks have for Air Force? As an SDSU fan I just don't get it. Their FB is good maybe once every 5 years, their basketball is always bad and playing either sport at the Academy is brutal due to travel, elevation and weather. Some seem to think AF is valuable as an academy, but that has never been the case as part of the MWC.
Any school 2k to 3.5k miles away is better than UAB/ODU/GSU/UNT. They just cannot stomach it.

3500 miles? Nobody is talking about inviting Hawaii.

SDSU is less than 2700 miles from Temple.

The reason people reference MWC schools like SDSU, AFA, CSU versus UAB or those others you mentioned is because a western school would add a new time zone which would be something of value. A late AAC kickoff.

It adds potential East Coast ratings. If UAB plays ECU at 7pm or earlier, it isn't likely I am going to watch that game. However, if ECU is on playing SDSU or CSU at 9:30PM. I am certainly going to watch that over the plethora of West Coast teams playing each other that I have no rooting interest in.

The thing is none of those schools fans care to play Temple. There is no connection to East coast schools. It would be like GSU playing in the MAC. Nobody is blowing up regional rivalries unless you're paying Big 12 or PAC 12 money. It's just not going to happen. The travel isn't worth it.

After having Navy as a conference member, what I have noticed is these military academies have a strong national brand. Whenever an AAC school plays Navy, the TV ratings are pretty strong. When Navy came to Cincinnati, we had a lot of local vets attend the game that would not have otherwise come to watch us play just any team. I suspect it would be the same for Air Force, particularly since we have Wright-Patterson Air Force Base less than 60 miles away. Most of the schools in this conference have an Air Force Base within similar proximity.

Just my two cents.

Indeed. I'd be curious to know whether the other two academies have as large or larger a following as Navy does. ECU hasn't played Army since 2004, and has never played Air Force to my knowledge.

Like many of you, we do have Army (Fort Bragg - Fayetteville) and Air Force (Seymour Johnson (you heard that right) - Goldsboro) bases right down the road.

BYU is still my favorite over any/all MWC teams. What they lack in beer purchases, they make up for in butts in seats.

lol....says the guy who's historical perception of FBS begins all of 9 seasons ago. Furthermore, nothing is funnier than a Georgia St fan trying to explain to AAC schools that other teams arent interested in playing them....the University of Colorado played in an eastern leaning league (the Big8) for years. Had Texas acted in manner that radically destabilized the Big12----they might still be there.

Is it that much different?

Let's take SDSU for example. Who is their great rival they would miss? Fresno State? BSU? They could still play them in non conference. Are they going to miss SJSU or Hawaii?

As a football only, how much travel are we talking about? 4 football road games. So you would have 2-3 of those "long" flights per year going to Texas, OK, TN or Louisiana. So the great travel cost is one or maybe 2 flights to the East coast per year?

I don't see it. SDSU already signed up for the same deal about a decade ago. They are already members of the AAC in Women's rowing.

The MWC. Lol. Not only did they get less than half of what we got, that doesn’t include the additional money we get from Access bowls and NCAA tourney credits. The MWC should be embarrassed.

I am betting that in Southern California in any office you have several PAC12 and MWC grads and almost no AAC grads. It makes a difference when selling tickets to home games. As for travel you're talking about virtually no fans of whatever Western school you want traveling to away game ever.

I can buy all the PAC-12 grads in San Diego buying tickets for SDSU games. However, I don't imagine there are a plethora of UNLV, Nevada, Hawaii, BSU, Fresno State, SJSU, New Mexico grads running up SDSU ticket sales.

What do you seriously think the tickets sales would be for SDSU v Navy (2014 it was 33,077) versus SDSU v Fresno State (2019 it was 26,876)?
