I assume Sessoms falls in the “earned it” category, but I don’t know who/how it’s decided when someone goes up. The last jersey that went up in the rafters was paid for

I think Bazemore deserves his banner and didn’t pay for it. Although I realize he contributed to the program, which I’m thankful for. And I think Sessoms deserves a banner as well.

Lol he paid for it to go up. But believe what you want to believe

Lol - Baze is one of our best players to ever wear an ODU jersey. Sessoms is in the same category - no argument. But believe what you want to believe.

Let’s assume -for arguments sake- that you’re correct. If Sessoms is in the same category as Bazemore, then why does only one of them have their jersey in the rafters? If you’re saying both are deserving, why is one still not in the rafters (after 20 years) and one is hanging in the rafters after signing an obscenely large contract?

I know for a fact that one of the stipulations of Bazemore’s donation was his jersey going up in the rafters.

But believe what you want to believe.

Why do your arguments always seem to speak to some injustice. But let me ask you this, why has Bazemore had one of the most successful careers in the NBA of any ODU Alum? Perhaps it’s due to his talent? Did he buy his NBA career? I love Sessoms but tell me about his NBA career.

Bazemore may have had more NBA talent and I loved watching him play but his college career is not in the same ball park with Sessoms. How about comparing NCAA tournament stats. Sessoms vs Nova = 35points. Bazemore Vs. Butler = 0 points. I love and appreciate what Bazemore did for ODU and I am not saying his jersey doesn’t belong with the elite but Mac is dead on with Sessoms. You add up the impact for 4 years, the way he finished his career , I’d take Sessoms all day over Baze and most any others.

RE: Petey Sessoms
Have to agree here with JJ. Baze was capable of making spectacular plays, but he was still very much a work in progress even in his senior year. You could tell he hadn't maxed out but he was not yet an elite player. Part of what made him so fun to watch was actually being able to see his growth from year to year. He was and is an amzing athlete. All anyone had to do was watch his walk on the court to see his natural swagger.

Sessoms, was expected, by a lot of folks, to be drafted in the late second round. That said, it did not happen. He also played in a talent rich era of college basketball. His talent was pro level for sure..

RE: Petey Sessoms
IIRC, his draft year happened to coincide with a strike by players/owners. It shortened the season and screwed with the draft (may not have had one).

Love Kent Bazemore and always will. But the two careers at ODU don’t even compare. Sessoms was far and away the better college player.
