It is wayyyyy past time to honor Petey Sessoms. His jersey should be most certainly hanging from the rafters.

Maybe you aren't familiar with him? He is only one of the very, very top players ever at ODU. Many would say top five and almost everyone would say top ten.

TIME TO CORRECT A MAJOR OVERSIGHT!

As much as I loved watching Petey play in an ODU uniform, I doubt if he would make the Top 5 in my personal voting. Not saying that he isn't worthy or I wouldn't ultimately vote him in the Top 5, but off the top of my head there are a lot of very good players that played basketball at ODU that I have watched, along with a few such as Harry Lozon, Leo Anthony, Button Speaks, and Dick St. Claire that I never had the privilege of seeing. Guys such as the following (and this is not intended to be an all inclusive list - just some off the top of my head) -

Dave Twardzik #
Wilson Washington #
Joel Copeland #
Ronnie Valentine #
Ricky Michaelson
Oliver Purnell
Jeff Fhurmann
Mark West #
Kenny Gattison #
Charlie Smith
Frank Smith
Keith Thomas
Anthony Carver
Chris Gattling
Ricardo Leonard
Keith Jackson
Odell Hodge #
Petey Sessoms
Mike Jones
Alex Laughton
Arnaud Dahi
Ricardo Marsh
Vladas Vasylius
Drew Williamson
Gerald Lee
Frank Hassell
Kent Bazemore
Trey Freeman

I put a # symbol by the names that I most likely would rank ahead of Petey. The others I would have to put more thought into it before picking the next 3 players to fill out my Top 10. It's a tough thing to do ranking these solid players. They each had a different style and had their own way of impacting a basketball game to help ODU win, be it scoring, assists, rebounding, defense, or a combination of any of them.

Here's a link to one of the guys not even on my own personal list simply because I never got to watch him play. He certainly is deserving of a spot somewhere in the Top 10. If you haven't read it before, it's a very good read about a terrific ODU player whose number has been retired, and one that all ODU fans should enjoy -

https://odusports.com/news/2019/3/29/211797702.aspx

That’s a cool list and brings back some great memories. Happy to say I saw them all but same as you, I did not see Leo Anthony play. It’s hard to argue with your top seven but I think I would find a way to put Sessoms in, but it would be tough. One omission in your list was Cal Bowdler. I would put him in my top 10 and Reggie Bassett and Mark Poag playing alongside him was pretty impressive too. Thanks for sharing your list.

As much as I like Cal, I wouldnt put him in the same category. Cal had one great year, and 3 "good" years. And as much as I love Baze, there are some guys that should be in the rafters before him. I suspect his NBA success and generosity helped him get there. Sessoms, Loughton and Lee jerseys should be hanging in the Ted one day. Those are the big three that aren't retired yet IMO. And probably in that order.

Mark Davis was outstanding... outstanding hops and one of the best finishers we've ever had.

A lot of those names are really fine players. Yes, Mark Davis could jump. It took him till his senior season to really shine and his last 15 games really at that from what I recall. Reggie Bassett showed flashes of greatness. But only so often. Cal Bowdler was good but took him a while to get going.

Petey Sessoms WAS A STUD FROM THE SECOND HE STEPPED ON THE COURT. Teams had to game plan to try to stop him. Couldn't be done but every so often. No offense to Baze but he couldn't even bring the ball down the court as a freshman without bouncing it off his knee. All time greats are players that ARE GREAT their whole time at a school.

Of all the players we have ever had Petey Sessoms and Ronnie Valentine were two (And Odell Hodge, too bad he got hurt wasn't "quite" the same after) that took off from the first second they played. McAdoo, another fine player. Not in the same caliber as Petey. Stats don't lie.

Petey Sessoms: He scored 1,985 points (the fourth most in school history at the time), grabbed 779 rebounds and shot 81.9% from the free throw line. In each of his four seasons, Old Dominion qualified for postseason tournaments. These included the 1992 and 1995 NCAA Tournaments as well as the 1993 and 1994 National Invitation Tournaments.

Sessoms was named the 1995 CAA Player of the Year as well as that year's CAA Tournament MVP behind his team-leading 22.1 points per game and still-standing school record 730 total points. At the end of the year, Sessoms was also given Honorable Mention All-America status by numerous sports media outlets.

Don't dilute what Petey Sessoms did by rehashing all the other fine players we have had. Mark Davis? Mark Poag? Good players but not in the same category at all.

By the way Poag held the record 9-9 from three for only one year. Flipping George Mason kid went 10-10 to break the record. Not sure if that's still standing or not.

RE: Petey Sessoms
IIRC, Peteys one big weakness was he couldn't put the ball on the floor. Teams knew he'd set up in a corner and shoot from there so they guarded accordingly. BY his senior year he had gained enough ball control that he could drive a little and that freed him up some. Am I wrong?
I also remember his freshman year he wore that Pharoah hair cut and for all 4 years he had that scowl if he didn't like a call.

I'm pretty sure that no one is diminishing the stellar accomplishments of Petey during his time at ODU. All some of us are saying is that there are a lot of very good players that have played at ODU and not gotten their jersey retired. I'm probably as big a fan of Petey as anyone else is and he certainly is worthy of very strong consideration.

Listed below are the scoring and rebounding stats of 3 former ODU greats that don't have their jersey retired. All three players played the forward position. For impartiality I have left the player's name off the listing. All three players are from the Division 1 era. Which of the three players is the clear runaway winner of getting their jersey retired over the other two, and why?

Player A
Fresh. - 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds
Soph. - 14.4 points, 7.3 rebounds
Junior - 15.9 points, 7.9 rebounds
Senior - 14.7 points, 8.4 rebounds

Player B
Fresh. - 9.0 points, 5.3 rebounds
Soph. - 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds
Junior - 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds
Senior - 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds

Player C
Fresh. -15.5 points, 7.1 rebounds
Soph. - 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds
Junior - 20.2 points, 6.7 rebounds
Senior - 21.1 points, 6.6 rebounds

Kinda off topic but does anyone miss having actual jerseys (banners really) hanging from the rafters instead of the "ring of honor" we got going on now?

Petey Sessoms was a god-damned assassin on the court. Dude did NOT shy away from taking big shots.

And he had another guy like that on the court with him, Mike Jones. Those are 2 guys you would go to war with.

Swann and Larkin rarely get mentioned, but they were fun to watch as well. What a team. Man I miss the good old days!
As good as Hodge was, I remember him joking about how he couldn't jump. He could barely dunk theball, but give it to him down low and it was money.

I was at that game....it was GREAT!!! That whole team was rock solid Hodege, Sessoms, Jones, Swann, Larkin, and David Harvey off the bench. Oliver Purnell was an excellent recruiter.

A is Ronnie McAdoo.

B is Petey Sessoms.

C is Anthony Carver.

I was actually in a class with Harvey and Sessoms. We used to sit down in the front row and Harvey would give me a nod. You always needed guys like that on the team.

But Sessoms and Jones played with such a swagger. Swann was smooth, and Larkin so steady, and Hodge a banger, but Sessoms and Jones were just badasses on the court.

Yes! and I also miss having actual banners hanging for each of our NCAA/NIT appearances and conference championships rather than 2 cheap vinyl banners with multiple years in varying font sizes hanging there. One nice banner for each one is so much more impressive.

All some of us are saying is that there are a lot of very good players that have played at ODU and not gotten their jersey retired. I'm probably as big a fan of Petey as anyone else is and he certainly is worthy of very strong consideration.

Listed below are the scoring and rebounding stats of 3 former ODU greats that don't have their jersey retired. All three players played the forward position. For impartiality I have left the player's name off the listing. All three players are from the Division 1 era. Which of the three players is the clear runaway winner of getting their jersey retired over the other two, and why?

Player A
Fresh. - 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds
Soph. - 14.4 points, 7.3 rebounds
Junior - 15.9 points, 7.9 rebounds
Senior - 14.7 points, 8.4 rebounds

Player B
Fresh. - 9.0 points, 5.3 rebounds
Soph. - 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds
Junior - 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds
Senior - 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds

Player C
Fresh. -15.5 points, 7.1 rebounds
Soph. - 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds
Junior - 20.2 points, 6.7 rebounds
Senior - 21.1 points, 6.6 rebounds

It has been 2 days since I posted this and thought it might be a good time to unveil the player's identities.

A is Ronnie McAdoo.

B is Petey Sessoms.

C is Anthony Carver.

Im fine with retiring all three. And Loughton too.
