We still need a center to step forward. We have one that is a junior now. Time to play like a junior big guy, time's running short. I really hadn't seen coming that our best two bigger guys would take a step back this year .... so far.

Still need consistent point guard play too. One's a freshman, so he needs time. Might not happen this year.

So, AJ will help but we need more from others too. Not holding out much hope for this next game. 8 game losing streak, didn't see that coming either back when we were beating St. Joe's and NE.

Oh well, he life of a Monarch fan. Three wins all time in the NCAA's even with all the fine players like Sessoms, Hodge, West and Gattison et al of the past.

I think coaches can recruit leaders. Coaches should be able to determine if players have the natural leadership ability or not. Just my thoughts.

I understand your point but losing to William & Mary and JMU in the same season seems like a bit more than a re-building year. It really is atrocious and unacceptable.

We have been stuck in neutral for the past 30 years with slight ups and downs. JJ has been here for a while now. Do you really seem him leading the team in a significant upward trajectory going forward? Sincerely, I ask this question. I am not sure I do.

More specific to the thread, AJ Oliver is a stud. I am so happy to have him on the team.

In the 7-game slide opponents have 171 FT attempts to 78 for ODU...too many points for ODU to make up. Plus our bigs are either on the bench or playing passive defense as the game progresses.

PG play is a concern for me as well. Statistically, Curry is adequate- he doesn't turn the ball over much and 3.4 assists/g is all right, but there is no direction or flow to the offense. Green is showing the pressure of having to try to score, defend and direct the offense against the opponents best defenders while his team mates struggle to even make layups.

This team needs more than just one additional scorer.

This team needs a new coach, but I digress. Sorry.

That’s silly. This guy coaches his butt off. It’s up to these young men to respond and as of yet it just hasn’t clicked. It will. You guys underestimate how hard it is to replace two studs. Not one but two. Two that represented more than half of your offensive production. We knew that would be a problem so now is not that time for the “fire the coach” nonsense.

This guy has had a lot of "guys not responding" in 6+ years. It begins and ends with the coach. Good programs with good coaches build on successful seasons. They do not spend 5 years building to one good team, only to face another rebuilding process immediately thereafter.

What FBS FOOTBALL mid major school do you think the basketball program should try to emulate?

Because I can’t think of ONE midmajor basketball program (at a FBS school) that has a dominate basketball program and doesn’t have to rebuild.

I fully expect him to take over this team. I noticed it as well. Maybe not this year to honor the 'captain' tag on Green and Carver but certainly next year.

One thing I noticed is several of our players refused to pass him the ball, either opting to take a bad shot themselves or instead passing to Green in a worse position. Not sure if that is due to JJ's direction or the team hasn't bought in on him yet. I think AJ is probably the best player on the team, or at least has that potential, but he has a long way to go before he takes over the team. He needs to convince JJ, his teammates, and probably most importantly Green, that he is that guy.

RE: AJ Oliver
Toward the end of the game when Green got called for that foul in the corner and he started freaking out a bit Oliver was on him quick with a smile and keeping him cool. That's something we've seen missing from anyone else on the team that jumps in like that. I agree with the limited I've seen of him he's the most inclined to be that floor leader than anyone else I've seen thus far.

That's tough to explain to 18-20 year olds. Just because you're the leader doesn't mean you have to be the go to guy or the best and most talented guy on the floor.

He has much better body language than the rest of the squad. Not a great night for him, made some bonehead plays and took some tough shots, but Coach seems to like him - even after chewing him out one time in the 2nd half he was right back on the court at the next timeout.

Agree. There was one play where a guard drove to the hoop and Kalu and AJ where both opened behind the arc and he throws to Kalu who shoots a three that was off. After two games you can't make the new guy the leader, that has to happen more organically. Maybe he's trying to move to that roll too fast and getting some push back from teammates. I like his attitude and dementor on the court, much needed. We need to pieces to fix together quickly, a 1/3 of the season is already over.

This team just all around needs to pass the ball more and faster. There is way to much catch, look around to hunt a shot, dribble aimlessly 5 times, pass to another guy who is not in position to make a play, repeat. It needs to be pass, catch, immediately drive toward the basket or pass. Way too much probing from guys who have no chance of making a play. I'm looking at you Godwin.

Exactly...he has been the biggest disappointment so far. I can't count how many times I've heard JJ tell him to shoot his open shots and not continuously dribble to nowhere. His stats are overall underwhelming (he isn't the only one). My hope is the addition of Oliver will add competition in that position to better both himself & Godwin.

Oliver will lead ODU to another 20 win season, next year. All of JJ's 20 game (wins) over the last six years, have been lead by crucial transfers.
Recruiting good freshman is not one of JJ.s best abilities.

A 20 win season means nothing anymore. It doesn’t even get you into the nit.

Temple, Cincinnatti, Memphis? They are arguably "mid-major" but they are definitely in a G5 conference. Those would be the programs I think ODU should try to emulate in any case.

We are all sure as **** not mid-majors.

No, you ARE part of the G5. G1 of the G5. Damn you guys have a superiority complex. But keep up that P6 nonsense narrative. And great to see you on our board 722. I’ve enjoyed our exchanges.
