It is the belief by some of us that they are more interested in holding up the project than getting their design.

your belief is wrong. I know one of the main individuals behind this and they have been trying to fix the design behind the scenes for at least eleven months. they simply have issues with the design and realize that we will be stuck with any mistakes for the next fifty years. if tad and co had been honest and above board during for the last year this would not be happening now. I have issues with the design as well but their I like their alternative less. that does not mean I am going to make personal attacks and peddle conspiracy theories created out of whole cloth

Do you not see the issue with this statement? Fix the design? It was designed incorrectly? That's an opinion, not a fact.

At this point, anybody who is fighting the stadium is simply trying to delay the project. All stadiums look different. Arguing over a home and away side at this point is just silly.

Exactly. & putting out BS that they are just concerned about the design is the biggest farce.

& how in the hell could they have been concerned about the design for a year when it wasn't even known a year ago?

Some big wigs just wanted to be included and got butt hurt because they weren't.

This is stupid. This thread is stupid. This argument is stupid. The people pushing it are stupid. That half-assed "rendering" is stupid. The idea of hiring a "local architect" to design a football stadium is stupid. We are awash in a sea of stupidity. And I keep wondering why we don't all just ignore the stupidity in the hopes it will go away, but I'm reminded of the fact that our society loves stupidity. It wallows in it. That's why 87% of TV programming is reality shows- we love stupidity. It's like a wreck on the interstate- we can't help but slow down and look. I am well past ready for these people to shut the fu(k up already.

The issue is that people are acting like the stadium is a done deal when there are people still trying to stop it from being built. The best way to make that happen is to first delay it.

Bids are being opened today, and those bids are likely to be higher than planned for a number of reasons. There will absolutely be a call from some quarters to go back to the drawing board for fiscal reasons.

Delay. Create doubt. Kill the project. We saw it with MAPS. We saw it in 2001 and in 2014 with UAB football. We are seeing it right now with Protective Stadium.

Now whether the people complaining about the stadium are doing so for what they feel are legitimate reasons or not, they ABSOLUTELY are playing right into the hands of those trying to kill the stadium.

I think we are way pass the point of this stadium not being built. MAPS didn't even make it to a "fake" groundbreaking ceremony. I have no doubt there are some that don't want this stadium built but their cries are being carried away with the wind. And UAB Football was always on life support before the 2015 shutdown.

Nothing this big of a scale will ever not face opposition especially if the city is using taxpayer money to help build the thing. Probably wouldn't have been an issue if UAB had been allowed to have an OCS. But that's neither here or there.

The stadium is going to be built in the configuration that was approved. It's going to be open for the start of the 2021 football season. And that will be that.

Just for comparison sake, there were a group opposed to the I-20/59 project. Opposed it all the way until malfunction junction was shutdown in January. It didn't stop the show. This group opposed to this stadium will not stop the show.

There is just nothing to see here but keep getting all worked up for nothing. Maybe it is good therapy for some of you.

Coach Clark has input on design and is done with it. The Foundation is fine with it. These people need to stop their BS.

Stadium looks great and is going to be brand freaking new. Going to be a great place to watch a game.

Really my only concern is parking/tailgating, but I'm sure they will figure it all out in the end.

Tailgating will be a great experience. There will be a designated area not far from the stadium. It’ll be near the freeway in an open green space. I think it’ll be a better experience for the UAB games simply because everyone will be together in one area. Idk if it’ll be enough for the classic though.... parking will be the challenge.

In it's current configuration there is no way the new stadium could support the Classic which is why it will stay at Legion Field as long as it standing.

They were opened today. Attalla can answer this better than I, but I believe that they are available for public inspection once they have been reviewed and the low qualifying bid chosen

Ding, ding, ding!

Birmingham hates change. Always has.

Somehow it has crept along in spite of itself.

Birmingham will always be home for me, but for those who have never lived away from "205", your reality is a product of generations of people that know nothing else.

Not their fault, just a very narrow context of reality.

AL.com news from afar is the best reality TV going.

If you are a fan of UAB and have lived in Birmingham for any amount of time, you would know exactly what this crap is. You were probably one of the ones sitting there saying the football program was fine right before the shutdown too.

I was one of the ones saying even before the program was shut down saying it was going to be shutdown. I was told that I was wrong and that would never happen.

I don't think the City of Birmingham should be building a 45,000 seat stadium when we have two events that brings a larger attendance and more money in one year than 5 UAB Football seasons combined So Birmingham and city business leaders are bailing out UAB Football when an OCS is really needed but the BOT will not let UAB have. That's where your ire should lie; with the BOT.

That said, the stadium is going to be built with UAB in mind. Dirt has been dug and moved for the site. Nothing will stop this from happening now. Is that not enough for some of you?

I can think of a bunch of other matters some of you should be upset about but I guess it's easier to rant about two or three people who oppose a stadium design.

Then I have good news for you, the City of Birmingham isn't building a 45,000 seat stadium, the BJCC is. The city is only putting in a few million dollars into a project that is in the tens of millions. UAB is also contributing money as well

Your point about the Board of Trustees and an on-campus stadium is not wrong, and I agree that a UAB-owned stadium south of 1st Ave would be better for all involved (except maybe the BJCC) but we are where we are, and this is better than nothing

In terms of "two events" bringing in more than five seasons of UAB football, a couple of things:
A) again, UAB is contributing to the facility, so if ASU/A&M want to put some skin in the game vs. just renting it one day a year, then they can get some priority. As it is they don't so that event should be accommodated if possible, but the primary tenant helping to fund the facility gets priority.
2 - I would say a smaller Birmingham Bowl in a modern facility with modern amenities will bring in more money and more importantly give Birmingham a better image nationally than a larger event in a run down stadium that is lucky to have running water. Plus, the bowl game attendance last year was 28k, so the new stadium will handle it just fine
• The new stadium is pulling in new/returning events that have left as Legion Field was allowed to deteriorate. The Super 6/7 whatever will be back and it is being built for national level soccer matches. Even if it was totally unusable for the Magic City Classic, these other additional events IMO are worth building a facility to accommodate them

If the Classic is such an important event to Birmingham, then the schools can throw in some money and Legion Field can be updated. One event is not worth making literally every *other* event worse by having a stadium that is big enough for one day of the year and way too big for the other 364 days of the year

I'm torn. On one hand I happy that the city is doing SOMETHING! It took 25 years for us to even get here. On the other hand with this 45,000 seat facility, what cities are you competing with? I mean you've basically built an updated version of Bobby Dodd Stadium downtown that smaller than your current facility. It's very small time thinking from a city that claims to want to compete with other cities in the region. I assumed when folks said that they meant Atlanta, Nashville, and Charlotte but it seems what Birmingham will be competing with is Columbus, Ga, Tuscaloosa, Meridian, Ms, and etc.
