Football and Basketball Game Attendance
This is a huge growing trend in college sports right now. An article that was posted two years ago looked at the previous two years and found an average of 7% in dropped attendance across the board in college football.

Below is an excerpt from an article about UK basketball to show the real relevance of fans. It is astounding 28% of fans staying how to watch on tv vs showing up.

UK is only averaging 14K per game

Excerpt below:

The announced attendance and actual number of people in seats reflect this disparity. UK’s announced attendance, which is based roughly on tickets sold, averaged 19,821 going into Saturday’s game against Fairleigh Dickinson. In that same six-game period, the scanned count of people with tickets, media credentials and other passes that have a bar code averaged 14,161. That translates into about 28% of ticket holders not coming to games.

All you have to do is look at how the Grizzlies contract with the Tigers in terms of scanned vs. announced attendance. The scanned-in attendance would range between 40-70% of announced attendance.

Empty seats at college FB and BB games are part of the landscape. Yes, the upper echelon Big 10/SEC teams will see packed houses with very few empty seats, but for the remaining 60% of teams in those conferences, many empty seats (in the Big 10, lots of empty seats for Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers, Maryland even Michigan has plenty of extra seats; those the 'hard' sellouts are OSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State and Iowa). In the SEC, lots of empty seats for Ole Myth, Arkansas, Vandy, Mizzou, Kentucky, UT, South Carolina, Misstake and with hard sellouts for LSU, UGA, Auburn, 'Bama, Florida, aTm. In the Pac-12 empty seats are EVERYWHERE. In the ACC, everywhere EXCEPT Clemson. In the Big 12, everywhere except Oklahoma and (maybe) Oklahoma State (although they play in a 55k stadium).

You can stream almost any game. Most people are choosing to stay home and watch it on TV.
