He said in his press conference that he had gotten several p5 offers but had turned them down. With his pedigree in the NFL and at Memphis it seems reasonable to believe that. I suspect it was partially because he felt that Norvell would leave and he would be in line for the HC job here.

But that doesn't explain why CMN felt it necessary to hire from outside for his 2019 OC position.

"He’s turned down overtures from Alabama, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Miami and a bevy of NFL teams. "

https://dailymemphian.com/article/9352/i...-making-no

Yeah, I even remember Norvell referencing Alabama or maybe the host did and Norvell confirmed it in an interview. At any rate, CMN repeatedly stated he was happy to be able to retain RS after multiple P5 lucrative offers. He isn't making chump change at Memphis either. Think I read close to $300k. All those titles and pay bumps were prolly a result of serious offers.

ETA: With all the folks corraborating, I see no reason to doubt the claim.

Maybe calling plays isn’t a strong suite of RS? Maybe he’a stronger in other areas? Easy to see.

You mean on probation, right? We don't need any other reason for the NCAA to come sniffing around at our door.

Someone note the tile of "Offensive Coordinator" is one in title only, as Norvell assumes all of the playcalling responsibilities during the game.

It was thought that RS liked being involved more with the line and run game stuff and then assumed more administrative and recruiting responsibilities instead of taking a position with a better name but less impact.

I'm not sure what happened, but Silverfield was named co-offensive coordinator in early Jan., 2019.

Quote:Norvell also promoted offensive line coach Ryan Silverfield to deputy head coach and co-offensive coordinator. Silverfield, who will continue coaching the offensive line, was promoted to assistant head coach and run game coordinator after last season

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/s...485487002/

Johns was hired a few weeks later. MN said Johns blew him away in the interview. Maybe he wouldn't come aboard in a shared role? Maybe it was a salary thing? Who knows? Maybe MN thought he was better suited.

Chris Vannini from the Athletic was at the press conference and talked with Gaston today. He said Silverfield's wife is in medical school in Oklahoma...was in Chicago.

In January 2019, CMN had to hire an new OC. At that point, Silverfield had been with CMN for 3 seasons in Memphis (and I think 1-2 seasons with CMN at ASU). Yet, CMN hired Kevin Johns to fill the OC position and didn't elevate Silverfield. Maybe Silverfield will be a better HC than potential OC in terms of team motivation, administrative duties, etc..

Kevin Johns is still here as OC thus far.
Norvell did not take him to FSU...he just re-hired Dillingham.
Between Silverfield and johns...I think our offense should be in good hands.

Hell, anybody can call plays. Why else would everyone always be bitching about play-calling ? 04-cheers

Maybe we won't see those occasional "big-brain plays" that most people loathed. And maybe I'm misremembering, but I felt like I heard on one of the 929 podcasts that Norvell offered to let Silverfield call plays in the past but he turned him down.
