@DanielCFB1: Some names to watch for Ricky Rahne's staff at Old Dominion: Zohn Burden, David Corley, Sean Cascarano, Tommy Galt, A.J. Jackson, Will Windham, Trevor Andrews.

That's a good mix of young and experienced. A bunch of ties to PSU, but also a bunch of Virginia ties, as well.

I really like a lot of those names. Certainly interested in Burden and Corley and if both would come aboard and what their roles will be.

We can’t compete with thier resources and it’s a bigger stage, those are facts. I don’t need that kind of loyalty. Zohn leaving for VT doesn’t bother me as much as him being available to come back now. That tells me he’s a better recruiter than coach maybe. It sounded like Tech let him go because they were dissatisfied with the run game with him as RB coach. Local ties is something Rahnes will need and Burden becoming available provides a unique opportunity for us. Stinespring would seem to fit that bill as well but maybe Burden would come cheaper at a lower position. IDK.

If Burden is so great, why was he let go and does not appear to have gone to 'something better'. I don't want retreads for our program. I really don't care about 'local ties' - like that means anything? Is the 'downfall' of the program because we don't have local ties? I hope that the new HC doesn't maintain links to the past and cleans house -- I would like new faces to go new places with the program. I'm sure that the new HC will assess his situation and determine if there is a 'fit' for any of the existing staff -- my guess is maybe the DC and S&C -- other than that doubtful. Notice that you have not heard a peep of other schools snatching up 'available' ODU coaches in the shuffle ---- inquiring minds want to know, why? Could it be that their/ODU stock is not trading very highly after this fiasco of a season?

I'm excited for new directions in the program .... not links to the past. But it doesn't matter what I or any other posters on this board think ..... the ODU Football Commander-in-Chief will assemble his staff he deems gives him the best opportunity to produce a winner. If not, he is ultimately responsible for everything the program does, or fails to do ---

How do you know Burden is not going to something better? And you also don't even know the reason he was let go.

Burden would be an excellent hire. He's a fantastic recruiter and can coach.

One exception to that for Coach Rahne could well be Director of Sports Performance (strength and conditioning coach) Dwight Galt, who was only here for one year and who Rahne knows well from their time together at Penn State. Because of Rahne's history as a develper of QBs, another possibility could be QB coach Ron Whitcomb, if he likes what he has seen out of Whitcomb, who I believe has a pretty strong reputation as a QB coach. Other than Galt and possibly Whitcomb, I would be highly surprised if anyone else is retained.

Seriously, Whitcomb? IMHO He rode the Demarco and Heinicke train as long as he could ... with his football camps, etc. Did you see any program screaming to pick him up from ODU as a grand master of QB coaching? ODU Football QB selection and development has been ridiculous the last several years ..... I'd be in shock if the new HC would keep Whitcomb -- he will be lucky to land at an FCS program with his resume, but hey, maybe that QB Camp thing can be a winner.

There were schools interested. Ron did a lot of good things at ODU, including the development of Heinicke, Demarco, Washington, and Larussa......no need to diss him. He certainly was not the major reason.

I'll let the new HC be the judge on this one, and if not ODU (which I seriously doubt) see where he lands as the objective evidence of 'value' as a QB Coach.

I'm just not on your Burden train. Fortunately, not my call or anyone else on this message board ..... only one opinion counts and I look forward to seeing what those decisions are to fill out the staff, everything else is moot speculation and some 'wishful' thinking by zealous fans at this point -- which I believe to be a good thing, something exciting to talk about for the future of ODU Football by those who really care deeply about the program.

Think you guys need to get use to some new faces. Look for ties to PSU. My bet the SnC coach Galt is the only safe bet.

Yeah, I think we need to do better retaining local talent than we did under Wilder. Rahnes is from PA. We do need someone with "local ties" on staff for recruiting purposes if we want to achieve that goal. I agree that it's telling that VT let him go and I'm not ready to sign him up as the OC but having just been fired we might be able to scoop him up cheap and have him on staff for recruiting purposes which is what he seems to excel at. I'm fine with a house cleaning and it's the new coaches decision 100%.

So far we have:

--a bunch of HS and JUCO kids
--Couple college position coaches and GAs (one from Iowa St., one from Michigan)

03-banghead I hope followers aren't part of the hiring process because Wilder, Scott, and Withcomb are following him.

I'd like to see Stinespring (Recruiting Coordinator or heck - maybe OC) and Blackwell kept. I'd be happy to see Burden come back - a big help with recruiting. I think Whitcomb did some great things for ODU but I think it would actually be better for him professionally to move on and out from under BW's wing.

But I had no idea we'd be hiring the OC from Penn State 5 days ago and so I'm sure I have no idea who will be kept. But I do trust that Rahne does or will know after interviews.

I'm excited or the future.

I think those guys were following him before. They knew him from the camps.

Big Grin RE: Rahnes Staff Discussion
Wouldn’t think any of the assistants on a 1-11 program could possibly expect to be retained. Are all still employed by the university, or do their contracts terminate at the end of the season? Not much of a football guy, but I wish the new coach well. Hope he brings some prominence to the program, but it’s likely to be an uphill climb. [/b]

Looks like Galt is officially staying.

“When Stewart met with the team on Monday and announced that Galt was staying, players erupted into cheers and mobbed Galt. Rahne is scheduled to meet with the team on Wednesday.”
