Turnovers are always a "captain obvious" sort of stat, but UNI is #5 in FCS turnover margin and we all know defense is their weapon. JMU is also doing well in this area as are most quarter-finalist teams not surprisingly, but we simply cannot afford the old Nooch to appear and throw a few picks. Run the rock, dominate on the lines, keep the ball and find yourself in the semi-finals (probably against Montana if I had to bet). Wet weather is a wild card that I hope the team does not have to worry about on Fri night.

Can we stop with the old nooch talk? It's obvious he is not the same player and he even called it out in the post game press conference that he is tired of hearing it. It was fine for the first couple games this season but he's played lights out for 13 games this year.

Agree 100%, it is really getting old........it is like folks are waiting for even a mediocre game to say....see I told ya so.

It is actually rather insulting and demeaning & I thought as Dukes we were better than this......I mean seriously Thorpe and Birdsong did not have to put up with this crap.

Give it a rest and just support the guy, what more does he need to do. He has literally played 2 poor games in 2 years......and in one of those games the entire team played poorly at UNH and the other one was the MH circus atmosphere/distraction game at Colgate.

I've been one of the people saying the CAA is down this year and I still think it is (only one team in the quarterfinals, that's down by the conference's standards). That being said, our second largest margin of victory came in the second round of the playoffs against a conference champion. If the CAA is down this year, what does that say about the Big South in general?

the whole conference thing is overblown.

the Big Sky co-champ, Sac State, got blasted by Austin Peay at home.

But everyone was saying how great the Big Sky is this yer.

anyone doubting us because they think the CAA is down.....line up on the field against us and let's find out.

Funny thing is SP+ says the CAA is the best conference in FCS, and it's not even that close. We are definitely not a top heavy conference, but top to bottom I think we're better than most realize.

I actually think Monmouth is better than what we made them look like. They gave Montana a good game earlier this season, being down by less than a TD in the 4th quarter before it fell apart. KSU, a team Monmouth absolutely crushed, had a good game against Weber. So for what it's worth, the 2 best Big Sky teams(let's just forget about Sac St.) were only really a TD or two better than the top 2 Big South teams.

Cold and rainy you say? I bet CC is salivating over this weather. Just hand it to our RBs and watch them plow through the UNI defense as they slip around. I hope our team is practicing ball control drills in all this rain.

I also feel like Nooch option plays will work even better in the rain. They won't be able to see as well and won't be able to change direction to chase as quickly.

UNI will be the best team we have faced since WVU.

They have been a Jekyll and Hyde team for years. They can play with anyone one game, and get crushed another. If they can keep it a low scoring game - who knows?

Bad weather favors UNI in this game. Their offense wouldnt move the ball when its sunny and 80 so its not going to be much different on that side of the ball. However, any slow down from our offense helps UNI

people will look at the Iowa State score as a sign No Iowa is a tough team.

again, the defense looks solid.

but don't be fooled by that score. it was 13-13 going to OT and UNI's only TD in regulation was on a fumble return for a TD.
other than that, they had 2 FG's in regulation and a total of 262 yards of offense including OT.

this is not a good offense we will see Friday night.

They've certainly had some good games: Took Iowa St to 3OT (but lost by a FG), beat SDSU in the playoffs (but lost in the regular season 7-38), and beat ISU 27-10. However, getting obliterated by NDSU and SDSU, along with a 12pt loss to Weber, in the regular season isn't a good look for them.

Either their defense (which has shown to not be great against a strong offense) or our offense has to break. We've averaged ~56 points per game the past 4 games. We've scored less than 37 once against an FCS opponent this season and that was 27. Against top 10 teams this year, UNI has averaged scoring just under 16 ppg...and other than NDSU (which is arguable) we have a better defense than all of them. I think if we get to 27 we win, maybe even less with the rain. If the weather forces them to run, I think this game is over early. If it clears up, it could be a bit more interesting.

Cons: Can't go to the game Friday Pro: I'll be up in Philly for the Army/Navy game.

Last time I was up in Philly for a Friday quarterfinals game, that last second win almost gave me a heart attack. Weather isn't looking too promising for either game of my interests this weekend

What dont you agree with? Our defense shutting them down rain or shine or any slow down from our offense being beneficial to UNI?

Our weakness on defense is defending the pass. Our strength on offense is running the ball. Not that our pass defense is bad or that our pass offense is bad (Nooch has the best completion % in the nation)...but I think it'd be hard to argue that when a good opposing quarterback drops back and lets a pass fly, it doesn't make most of us at least a bit nervous as compared to the opposing team handing the ball off. Or that even our walk-on, fifth-string RB (or our QB tucking and running) doesn't keep opposing coaches up at night. Sure, a high scoring game benefits us...but I'd say that a bad weather game benefits us more because our offense can put up points on the ground all day and if you force the other team to keep it on the ground...no one is going to match us.

I don't know how a dome team can have any advantage in bad weather. I get that they're a defensive team, but they only won 3 games on the road all season.
I didn't think SDSU deserved to be seeded. They got seeded based on the team they were when they were healthy. The problem was that they weren't healthy and were a shell of a team that they were then.
The best team UNI faced all season was NDSU and they got destroyed. I don't see how we can't do what NDSU did so easily.
I'm not taking them lightly, but I don't think UNI is going to do anything we haven't seen yet this season. I could be wrong, but I am less concerned about UNI than I was about Monmouth.

BTW, just because UNI plays in a dome doesn't mean that they don't practice outside for most of the season because they do. From what I understand all of their practices on game weeks against outdoor opponents are actually on their outdoor practice field.

Starting OL 2nd round playoffs vs SDSU game notes:

RG 6’4”/325 (rJr)
RT 6’8”/290 (rJr)

Those are some tall, corn-fed Iowa-sized fellers right there. Maybe JMU should start recruiting for a couple of linemen in the mid-west to mix with our East Coast stock. It is strange to me that given the size of UNI’s OL that UNI’s stats don’t show they’re particularly good at running the ball.

UNI’s FR QB is listed at 5’11” and only completes about 55% of his passes? Maybe the problem there is he can’t see over the top of the OL trees trying to protect him.

As is the case in most games, this one will be decided up front in the trenches. If the trenches are a “push” will JMU’s speed, superior QB play and skill guys beat UNI’s beef?

While NDSU and a healthy SDSU (first regular season contest) beat UNI rather handily, I hope the weather doesn’t take away JMU’s advantage in the passing game. JMU should win easily, but JMU fans said the same thing about Weber a couple years ago.
Looked at NDSU starting OL & are similar sized. Typical midwest Big 10. Heck, as I recall on 8/31 watching SDSU @ Minnesota, Minnesota has a 6'9"/400+ OT.

Must be some HGH in the water out there lol..
