Hogs Hire Sam Pittman as HC

Keep an eye on Barry Odom, the recently fired head coach at Missouri as a defensive coordinator candidate.

Good God. Choices must have been pretty slim.

If Pittman is not a good choice...

What does that make Silverfield.

There was a massive push by former players that played under Pittman to hire him. The day he left was the end of Beliema. It is expected that Odom will be DC if he isn't the U of M HC.

58 year-old with no D1 HC experience. A 11-9-1 record during a two-year stint as a JC HC in 1992-93. Played defensive end in college.

Comes from a coaching tree that seemed to stress running the ball.

Underwhelming indeed.

Silverfield will turn 40...which is a pretty good time to become a HC in terms of age/seasoning. He's still pretty young.

The downside with Silverfield is that he's a CMN protege and yet CMN never saw Silverfield fit to serve as an OC. CMN hired Kevin Johns in 2019 to serve as OC.

Youth does not translate into ability.

He is still the Line coach like Pittman...But at least Pittman was titled as associate head coach or some crap like that.

Norvell also promoted offensive line coach Ryan Silverfield to deputy head coach and co-offensive coordinator. Silverfield, who will continue coaching the offensive line, was promoted to assistant head coach and run game coordinator after last season

Well there you have it...Didn't know that.

So they are equivalent.

Well, it looks like they got their guy.

Beliema was 11-29 in the SEC... which are now fondly remembered as glory years by battered Hog fans. Hopefully, he can bring Beliema ball back to Fayetteville.

Pittman is 58 years old and has never been an OC (or DC) at a D-1 school. What does that tell you about his coaching acumen? Granted, he might be a great administrative guy who can hire all the right people, but it doesn't look like he's had much experience in that area either.

Silverfield has another 18 years to achieve that and will likely exceed that this year.

RE: Hogs Hire Sam Pittman as HC
I think its clear that Pittman was not high on the list, but I think there is a chance that he can fit into an Ed Orgeron type mold with good coordinator hires. Fully expect to see at least one former HC on the staff. Wish the Hogs luck, even if its just to keep Ole Miss down. And to make our future games more appealing.

Silverfield was the favorite when it was speculated that Norvell was in play.....We heard zero talk of this goof until Arky realized that their pickins were slim. If you think that these hires are similar then that says more about you than it does about the hire and Silverfield.

The goof has hired Odom as DC and Briles as OC.
