79-74 Dukes win.

Heck of a comeback in the 4th, but didn't have enough to finish.

RE: WBB @ Duquesne
Offense looked much, much better, but way too many unforced turnovers.

Defense on the other hand, still not up to par. In the 1st half, they made Duquesne hit tough shots over defenders (which they hit most of the time) but in the 2nd, they gave up a ton of backdoor cuts, and wide open 3s, which was ultimately the difference.

Rockets shot 48% for the game, 32% from 3, and 80% from the line.
But the gave up 52% shooting, and 45% from 3.

I hope Whitaker is ok. Not sure what the issue was when she was down, but they helped her to the bench and she looked to be in a bit of distress.

IMO this was the best game the Rockets have played this year. Black and Santucci were excellent as they need to be if this team is going anywhere. Beacham was also good. And freshmen Barnes and Lockett contributed and 10 players scored points. Looked to me like Whitaker had head trauma.

Rockets made it exciting. Santucci is playing with a lot more determination the last couple games. If we shoot that well and still lose, though, it's not a great sign.

RE: WBB @ Duquesne
Looking at the conference as a whole, it's probably late enough in the season to say that the MAC will be a one-bid league this year. Kent State is the top team in RPI with a rank of 67. Ohio has a big-time win at Ohio State, but the Bobcats have two losses and are ranked 107th. Last year, MAC teams were able to get quality wins against each other, but this year no one will be helped by the conference season. Kent State has non-conference games left against Purdue and Troy, so the Flashes have the opportunity to move up. However, Kent's RPI is boosted by a couple of lopsided losses to very good teams. Kent hasn't beaten anybody good, and it seems highly unlikely that they will beat both Purdue and Troy. (Kent State did win at Duquesne, which is the Flashes' best win.)

RE: WBB @ Duquesne
How many travels were called? Some, of which, IMO did not look like steps. Too many moving screens on Beacham. The Dukes moved so well without the ball. Even with Rockets playing solid defense, their shooting % increased ever quarter, hitting 70% in the 3rd. Not sure about the 4th but, for the game it had to be near 60%. Rockets has their best night from the free throw line this year. While there is significant room for improvement, this team has made large strides in the early season.

The Rockets’ movement on both ends vastly improved over earlier games. The Dukes announcers sounded stunned when the Rockets cut into the lead to make it a one-point game under two minutes WITH the ball!

RE: WBB @ Duquesne
In the article on the UT website, Coach Cullop gives the excuse that this year's squad is a young team. I think that is not accurate. Our top four scorers are juniors and seniors. Our top six rebounders are juniors and seniors. Our top four in minutes played are juniors and seniors.

There are some MAC freshmen contributing to their teams in major ways - Blackford and Shumate at Kent State, Davis at Central Michigan, Fair at Buffalo, Clephane and Freeman at Ball State, Scott at Miami, Koker at Northern Illinois. I'm sure that I'm missing some. We are hoping that our freshmen will develop into good MAC players, while several other schools have at least one freshman who is already a good (or excellent) MAC player. Not to mention that presumably every team in the conference has a better sophomore class than we do. Kent State is a better team than we are, and they start two freshmen and two sophomores, not to mention that they have a transfer from Indiana University who is resdshirting and will be a junior next year. Central Michigan is better than we are and returns all five starters next year. Bowling Green is better than we are and returns its top eight scorers next year. Ohio University has only one senior who contributes, and the Bobcats have a transfer from Wisconsin redshirting this year.

Cullop is upbeat, which I guess is a good thing, but it wears a little thin when the team is bad.
