L.A. Clippers arena news
Other than the MSG lawsuit this was the other potential hold-up. It looks like that obstacle is being lifted.

Quote:The California Air Resources Board has granted fast-track approval to a proposed $1.2 billion Los Angeles Clippers arena in Inglewood that should allow the project to be finished in time for a 2024 basketball season.

After nearly a year of back-and-forth negotiations, CARB determined last week that the project will not result in a net increase in greenhouse gases and, thus, qualifies for special protections from environmental lawsuits that could otherwise stall construction for years.

“CARB staff conducted an evaluation of the GHG emission estimates and reduction measures submitted by the applicant, and confirmed that the applicant’s methodology, calculations and documentation are adequate,” wrote Richard Corey, CARB’s executive director, in a letter to the governor’s Office of Planning and Research.

Under the decision, any court case attempting to stop the arena will have to wrap up within 270 days.

Assembly Bill 987, a law passed specifically to move the Clippers project forward, required the Inglewood Basketball and Entertainment Center to be net neutral and reduce 50 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions through local measures.

So they are tired of sharing the arena with the Lakers and the Kings? Do the Kings want in on a new arena and everyone leaves the Lakers as the solo tenant?

RE: L.A. Clippers arena news
I don't think Ballmer has ever been happy about being a tenant in Staples. It's never been a good arrangement because it's the Lakers' house. The Clippers have always been seen as the lesser team, even when they were better and they really do need to be out from the Lakers' shadow, especially now.

Inglewood is riding an unbelievable wave right now. When the Forum lost the Lakers (and Kings - but that wasn't nearly the same), all they had left was Hollywood Park and that wasn't much. The city has been in terrible shape. With the Rams new facilities, and now the Clippers the city looks like it's made of gold. The MSG dispute isn't nothing - I assume Ballmer's going to have to cut a check to Dolan at some point. But that should happen fairly soon

Dolan might want money, but might alternatively want a cut of revenue from concerts held at Ballmer's arena, or an agreement to limit the number of concerts at Ballmer's arena so that the Forum can still have X number of shows.

Wonder if they’ll poach the Mighty Ducks from the Pond of Anaheim.

The Ducks owner, a billionaire who has lived in Orange County for most of his life, also owns the company that operates the Anaheim arena (which hasn't been called the Pond for well over 10 years). If you think he's going to cost himself money by moving his own team out of his own arena in Orange County, well, good luck with that prediction.

Are there enough non bball events in LA to justify a new 19k arena? I Know Ballmer has money to burn, but since he will have to finance it, I’m sure he’ll be looking for a decent ROI.

If the Clippers really want to be out of the Lakers’ shadow, they need to move to Seattle.

Only if Ballmer is willing to lose 1/4 to 1/3 of his team’s value.

The Clippers should have moved to Anaheim. Screw absolute dollars, it's pride and identity.

Anaheim has zero identity. Its why the Angels have done everything they can to marginalize that portion of their name.

They eliminated it from the team name. It's now just "Los Angeles Angels".

I think they should have gone back to "California Angels".

But I'm pretty sure that the reason Moreno wanted "Los Angeles Angels" is that he thought the Angels would get more attention in the market if the media could no longer refer to the Dodgers as simply "Los Angeles" -- every time they have to say "Los Angeles Dodgers" or use the abbreviation "LAD" instead of just "LA", it's a subtle reminder that there is another team in the market.

At any rate, Angel Stadium is closer to Los Angeles than Levi's Stadium is to San Francisco, so...

Phoenix has two pro arenas (one for Suns, one for Coyotes) and both stay busy year-round. LA could support three at least 19+ arenas without a problem.

One big draw is concerts. Since the advent of streaming/file sharing etc, most musicians make far more money in concerts than sales.

Add to that big events like Cirque du Soleil, etc and you have demand.

The "damage" to the Forum would be that the newer arena will get more of the most attractive events that provide the most revenue to the arena owner, as has happened in the Bay Area with Chase Center opening. Chase is getting the biggest concert draws, The Who, Elton John, Ariana Grande, etc. Oakland Arena doesn't get those now but gets things like a two-week Cirque du Soleil engagement.

Ballmer's arena would be a double whammy for the Forum, because Staples Center would probably also get more of those top concert events with the Clippers moving out and making over 40 more dates available at Staples.

But LA already has Staples, the Forum and Anaheim Arena. Plus it’s Southern California so plenty of outdoor venues are viable options too. I’m sure Ballmer is planning to cut into someone’s pie, just trying to figure out who.

The population of Orange and LA Counties is 3 times that of Maricopa County.

Plenty of room for another venue. Yeah, the Forum may suffer some, but there is plenty of business to go around.

Staples will still have two main tenants taking 90 nights. Clippers and Anaheim would have 45 locked up.

Quote:Newsom certified the project Friday under legislation passed last year to shield the project from extended environmental litigation.
The decision, which sets a nine-month window for lawsuits and appeals over the project’s environmental impact to be resolved, came after the California Air Resources Board found the project would be net carbon neutral.

The state’s Joint Legislative Budget Committee has 30 days to approve Newsom’s certification. If that happens, the environmental impact report will be released.

RE: L.A. Clippers arena news
Quote:The billion-dollar arena complex the Clippers want to build in Inglewood took another step forward Friday with the release of the draft environmental report for the project.

The report found that the privately financed Inglewood Basketball and Entertainment Center might create a “large number of significant and unavoidable transportation impacts,” but would add almost 1,000 full-time non-construction jobs in the city, and won’t contribute to gentrification or impact the viability of competing arenas in the region.

“We think the project that’s being shaped through this process is going to be the most fan-intensive basketball experience in the country,” said Chris Meany, the developer and project manager for the arena.

The complex would occupy 28 acres — including 22 controlled by the city — near the intersection of West Century Boulevard and South Prairie Avenue.

An 18,000-seat arena, featuring a sweeping roof that is designed to evoke the diamond shapes in a basketball net, anchors the development. Plans for the surrounding area include three parking garages, a practice facility, team offices, sports medicine clinic, hotel, retail space and a plaza.

Murphy’s Bowl LLC, the Clippers-controlled company behind the complex, hopes to start construction by July 2021 and complete the project in time for the 2024-25 season.
