I always like seeing the list of who you chose versus who chose you. Those collide with:

W&M
Miami U
Wake Forest

Good company!

Ironically, we do share a very distinct honor with Texas State. Very few Universities can claim a U.S. President as an alum. We have 3. Texas State has LBJ.

It's a short list of schools and we are both members of the club.

Actually, W&M claims four US Presidents as alums: Washington, Jefferson, Monroe & Tyler.

Washington doesn't really count, IMO. IIRC, he got his surveyor's license at the College (which was basically just fill out a form and apply, but didn't require classes) and then served as Chancellor of the College, but I don't think we get to count him as an alum.

Schools W&M selected as peers:

Boston College
Brown
Dartmouth
Duke
Georgetown
Miami (OH)
Princeton
Tufts
UNC-CH
Notre Dame
UVA
Vanderbilt
Wake Forest

The list of schools that selected W&M as a peer is pretty random:

Alabama A&M
Binghamton
Bowdoin
Bucknell
College of New Jersey
Christopher Newport
Elon
Liberty
Miami (OH)
Morgan State
Northern Arizona
Rowan
Rutgers
SUNY Geneseo
Texas State San Marcos
UConn
Delaware
UMass
UNCG
Richmond
Wake Forest
This is terrifying

It cracks me up how Christopher Newport is always portraying themselves as our peer and our equal. They must really brainwash their students, too, because I've had one alum trying to convince me for years that CNU is equal in all the national rankings to W&M.

A list like that strikes me as pipe-dreaming by schools ...wishing and hoping. By the way, since Wake Forest is still a private school (I assume), I do not consider them to be a peer of W&M. They are P5/FBS only by sheer happenstance of being in the right place at the right time in 1953. Otherwise, they would probably have been D-III all these years or, at most, FCS like Elon.

It's tough to define our peers - if you go by size, type (public/private), and academic prestige/endowment, we're pretty much on our own. Not sure there's another public college our size with the academic rankings or endowment we have (Sorta the military academies, but they're in their own category).

Based on Forbes list, we're the highest ranked non military public school with under 10k students. The 2nd highest is the Colorado School of Mines (#94) and 3rd is SUNY College of Environment and Forestry (#217).

So, just to follow up on my post asking how many high end academic schools have no major football team, you all answered it. Not many. I don't care about scholarships (Ivies)....they still play FCS. The point is that football is an important part of an athletic department in highly academic schools who play D1 in other sports. We simply can't get rid of it or de-emphasize it until the sport itself loses traction, and I don't think that's coming for at least 25 years.

Washington doesn't really count, IMO. IIRC, he got his surveyor's license at the College (which was basically just fill out a form and apply, but didn't require classes) and then served as Chancellor of the College, but I don't think we get to count him as an alum.

FWIW, W&M officially recognizes GW as an alumnus. https://www.wm.edu/about/wmdifference/incrediblealumni/

GW had no other formal education and he used his position as surveyor to advance his status and wealth, so thats probably how they can justify it.

Another FWIW: One need not graduate from a school to be considered an alumnus/alumna...one need only attend the institution to gain that title.
