Charlotte 49ers
Record vs D-I: 3-4
RPI: # 268

It's been a mixed bag of performances for Charlotte so far for 2nd year head coach Ron Sanchez. The 49ers have solid victories over Davidson and Wake Forest, which in juxtaposition make their losses to Appalachian State and UNC Asheville head-scratchers.

A former assistant under Tony Bennett for 12 years, Sanchez's focus since arriving at Charlotte has, unsurprisingly, been defense. The 49ers were stingy last season to the tune of 68.7 points allowed, an 11+ point reduction from the previous season. So far, so good in 2019-20 in that regard, as they've allowed 68.1 points per contest despite playing a pair of overtime contests and a fairly challenging early schedule.

Charlotte has had a balanced attack on offense, with three players averaging double-digits and another that is very close to joining them. Leading the way is 6-4 redshirt junior point guard Jordan Shepherd, a transfer from Oklahoma. Shepherd leads the team in scoring, at 14.7 ppg, as well as assists (4.1 apg). Next on the scoring list is another transfer, 6-4 grad student Drew Edwards, who comes to the 49ers from Providence. Edwards is averaging 11.4 ppg with 4.0 rpg and 1.6 spg. He also leads the team in free throw shooting, at .875.

Also in the backcourt is 6-1 freshman Jahmir Young, averaging 10.6 ppg and surprisingly leading the team in rebounding, at 5.6 rpg. He's also second in the team in assists (3.3 apg) and leads the team in steals (2.1 spg). Manning the 4 in Charlotte's 4-guard lineup is 6-6 sophomore Malik Martin. Martin is averaging 9.7 ppg with 3.6 rpg, 5 blocks and a .417 three-point % (7-17).

Rounding out the starting 5 is another grad transfer, 6-9 forward Amidou Bamba, who came to the 49ers from Coastal Carolina. Bamba is not a huge offensive threat (6.0 ppg) but has a team-leading 8 blocks and 5.1 rpg. In his limited touches he has been efficient down low, shooting 19-26 for a team-best .731 FG %. It's notable and impressive that Charlotte has been successful to this point with 3 transfers in their starting lineup.

Charlotte employs a deep bench, with 5 different players averaging 10+ minutes per contest, though only 3 of those have seen action in all 7 games thus far: The 49ers' 6th Man has been 6-1 sophomore guard Cooper Robb (5.6 ppg; 1.0 spg; 5-10 from 3; 17.9 mpg). Spelling Bamba at the 5 has been 6-9 junior Milos Supica (6.6 ppg; 4.9 rpg; 14.1 mpg). Lastly, 6-7 freshman wing Brice Williams (4.4 ppg; 5-12 from 3; 13.9 mpg) has made a nice impact in the rotation.

Overall, Charlotte is not a particularly dangerous perimeter team, shooting just .309 as a team. Perhaps because Coach Sanchez recognized this, they don't tend to rely heavily on the 3 ball, averaging fewer than 20 attempts per game. Turnovers have also been a problem for the 49ers, as they average 15.3 per contest. Charlotte has also apparently seen a fair bit of luck in some of their close games, as teams have struggled from the free throw line, shooting just .556. Part of that might be Charlotte's defense wearing teams down over the course of games.

If turnovers are a problem for them, which the numbers support... we had damn well be ready to press. Not just that BS PG picking up the PG at 3/4 court but a legit press that forces them to make mistakes.

Yep. Need to take advantage of the students' presence and noise. This will be the last home game in non-conference play where the students will be around.

Let's hope, but last time i saw the trap was against a D3, and they looked lost

Yep. I'm hopeful we're not simply abandoning it just because it's looked sloppy. If anything that just means we need to practice it more and double down.

It's not like straight M2M has worked (albeit its been far better in Year 3), so we have nothing to lose by prepping it for CAA play, even if we have major growing pains.

At this point I have no reason to believe we will play any kind of serious press in game. I see it popping up at the end of games again like last year.

Seahawks Renew Rivalry With 49ers

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Separated only by a four-hour drive on U.S. Route 74, old rivals UNCW and Charlotte collide early Saturday when the 49ers pay a visit to the Port City for a men's basketball matinee at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (5-5) and 49ers (3-4) meet for the first time since Nov. 25, 1995, in a 2 p.m. start. The series originated back in 1964 and the two clubs are battling for only the sixth time in Wilmington.

The Seahawks return to their home floor following a pair of road losses at Boise State and Stanford over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Cardinal handed the Seahawks a 72-54 setback last Sunday in UNCW's last outing. Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims and sophomore forward Marten Linssen scored 12 points apiece for UNCW, which outscored Stanford, 35-34, in the second half.

A Charlotte, N.C., native, Sims is fresh off being named to the Colonial Athletic Association's weekly Honor Roll after averaging 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in three games last week. He shot a blistering 52.6 percent from three-point range.

UNCW hopes to welcome back sophomore guard Ty Gadsden, sidelined the first 10 games of the year after off-season surgery. Gadsden is the club's top returning scorer (11.5 ppg) and connected on 47.5 percent of his long-range shots one year ago, the third best single-season mark in the program's history.

Charlotte, which owns wins over Davidson and Wake Forest, looks to regroup following its first home loss of the season. UNC Asheville placed all five starters in double figures in an 83-75 victory over the 49ers on Tuesday night in the Queen City.

Redshirt junior guard Jordan Sheppard, an Oklahoma transfer, led the 49ers with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Sophomore guard Cooper Robb delivered 14 points off the bench and drained a pair of three-pointers in the stinging loss.

Saturday's contest will be carried over the air on The Breeze, 95.9 FM, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro and color analyst Marty Feurer providing the call. The game may be heard worldwide on the station's website, http://www.959thebreeze.com. Video will also be provided on FloHoops for a monthly/annual subscription at http://www.FloHoops.com.

Saturday's game begins a month-long 'Sock Exchange' initiative by the Seahawks. Fans donating a pair of new closed-toed youth shoes at any men's or women's basketball home game in December will receive a pair of navy logo socks.

Seahawk fans donated more than 300 pairs of shoes last year and they were distributed to three area elementary schools for students in need. Shoes may be donated at the following games this month: MBB vs. Charlotte (Dec. 7), MBB vs. Mercer (Dec. 16), WBB vs. Coastal Carolina (Dec. 8) and WBB vs. Winthrop (Dec. 17).

Seahawk Storylines

* Charlotte leads the all-time series by a 10-4 margin, including a 4-1 advantage at Trask Coliseum.

* UNCW faces eight opponents with head coaches in their first or second year: Johnson & Wales, Emory & Henry, Cleveland State, FIU, Charlotte, Vanderbilt, William & Mary, and Elon.

* The Seahawks are playing their second game in December. After opening the campaign with nine games in the first month of the season, UNCW eyes six games this month - two at home and four on the road.

* Three Seahawks hail from the Queen City. Freshman Jake Boggs (Carmel Christian), sophomore Jaylen Sims (United Faith Christian) and junior Ty Gadsden (Believe Prep/Vincennes) are very familiar with the Charlotte program.

* The Seahawks have faced nine opponents from Conference USA and fashioned a 31-47 (.397) record against the group.

* UNCW is taking on its third Charlotte-area opponent this season. The Seahawks cruised past Johnson & Wales, 103-83, in the season opener on Nov. 5 before suffering an 87-49 defeat at Davidson on Nov. 16 at Belk Arena.

* The Seahawks stand 4-1 at home following wins over Johnson & Wales, Campbell, N.C. Wesleyan and Emory & Henry and a loss to No. 9 North Carolina.

* The Seahawks are one of the youngest teams in the NCAA Division I ranks, with three freshmen, five sophomores and four juniors expected to suit up Saturday. UNCW is one of just seven teams in DI with no true seniors on its roster (UNCW, CSU Bakersfield, Mount St. Mary's, Richmond, Santa Clara, Stony Brook, USC Upstate).

This game and the Mercer game will show us if we can compete in the CAA. To feel confident we need to win both. After these games its just @Vandy and then CAA play starts. Time to start showing results. Not much to take away from the UNC/Stanford games or the 3 non D1 games. We are 2-3 against other mid majors with an embarrassing loss to Davidson and a 1 pt loss to Cleveland State who we should have beat. On the other hand we beat a solid FIU team and played our best basketball in that game on a neutral court.

Wow, dogs at home? Hawks need to come out fired up. Hopefully Ty can light a fire like he usually does. I've missed him. He's a nice addition. It may take some time to get his game back or not but he was a bright spot last year for sure. A very underrated player by most people that watch but he really hustles, has a great 3 ball and seems to have a nose for the ball. We've been missing a guy like that. He has good basketball IQ and this team definitely needs his leadership qualities.

I won't be able to watch more than likely due to family stuff, including church activities and basketball with youngest son, but will check in. Hope the team comes together and plays a good game! Go Hawks!!

"Charlotte" 49ers vs "UNC Wilmington" Seahawks

Ongoing B*tch Alert: Please note how ESPN (and all the other outlets) list our school's name, vs how they list the name of today's opponent.

Two schools. Same university system.

Yet one is referred to by the name they prefer to be called, and the other is referred to by "UNC Alphabet Soup - Hyphenated or Not" name.

One school understands branding, refers to itself only by that brand name, and insists that others refer to them by that name as well.

The other does not...

Even screwier is they(espn) give us a 51.6% chance of winning despite being 4 point dogs.

It would be great to get this going. We have a lot of alumni in Charlotte who would probably attend games.

I personally am fine with UNCW. When anybody hears Charlotte, they think Charlotte NC. When people hear Wilmington, most think Wilmington Delaware. Who actually has a Wilmington College.
