RE: Charlotte (Saturday, Dec 7 - 2 PM)
Bigger picture to me is our offense/lack of passing and cutting. Our defense is what it is and it's not good, but the offense has to be addressed. Playing against a Pack line defense and hero dribble driving the ball ain't going to cut it at all. In fact, it's stupid at this level. I'm WAY more pissed off about that than the actual result here. Hawks need a darn 6'9" to 6'10" athletic guy too that can defend in the post. Marty is a good player but we need 1 more guy for sure.

Boggs over Okauru, and you have to pick between Phillips Toews. They can’t play together.... Gadsden should be starting at the 2

Wouldn't surprise me if Gadsden will start next game.

Tough break but might be a blessing in disguise. Take the medical RS and come back next year when the logjam at guard should be a bit cleared up.

No we need him playing over Tolefree. It’s only a blessing because our coach refuses to cut his rotation down.

RE: Charlotte (Saturday, Dec 7 - 2 PM)
There are some must do's for this team to win.

1. We must press. Not the token run a few seconds press, but a legit, trapping full court press. You can see the guys get pumped when we do, and the disruption it causes creates missed shots and TO's. I've been saying this since McGrath got here, and it's more important this year since we simply cannot defend in half court. It will also give us energy right from tip off and hopefully stop the lethargic play we have been having in the first half of games. "Winning" the second half of games means nothing when you're down by 20+ in the 1st half

2. We are going to have to play zone. Linssen and Dodd cannot defend in the post against even a half way decent post player. We also cannot stop dribble penetration, and when they beat us off the dribble, we don't have any size to alter or block the shots of the driver and we can't rebound missed shots in the paint.

We have such huge deficiencies on this team that it's going to take an out of the box game plan to win or even be competitive. The two strategies above are the only solutions I can think of. Also, Gadsden is the only one who seems to play with passion and fight. I'm sick of this crap. That will be the last game I attend in the McGrath era unless I see a reason to return.

This team is just not very good. Bad coaching, bad offense and terrible defense. Charlotte went on a freaking 24-0 run in the first half - how is that even possible. Charlotte shot around 70% in the second half - you have to be terrible to allow your opponent to shoot 70% in a half. Defense is 75-80% effort and a willingness to compete. How many of our guys are really competing tenaciously? Players like John Goldsberry would be completely embarrassed to watch this type of play. Everyone talks about McGrath bring a good recruiter, but I don’t even see that. We have a few ok players and the freshman have some potential, but I don’t think we have many players that would play significant minutes on a good mid-major team. Is this staff even capable of developing the freshman? I doubt it -

So you are actually saying that Sims, Gadsden and Toews are not good ballplayers? Unbelievable. SMDH
Gadsden comes back from hip surgery and he is diving for loose balls and scoring 11 points. All in the second half.
Toews, while I think he is holding on to the ball too much, he still 8 assists. And that with poor shooting. He's so bad he plays on the Japanese National team. Probably the youngest player on the team.
Sims has been our most solid player so far. He just had his worst game today.
But sure, I guess they should be playing D2 ball.

How in the world do you guys have virtually the same screen name? That is confusing. Could one of you change your screen name?

Yes, too much FREAKING dribbling for sure! You just don't see winning teams trying to drive the ball from 20 feet out to the hole that often and I'm not talking about Toews so much here although he needs to initiate the offense better. Others were forcing it too much too. A drive and kick is fine or if there's a lane or drop down pass. Inside out 3 balls are fine but perimeter jacks without a paint or near paint touch don't work out as well.

Yep 82, we need to bring pressure and passion for sure. Play the guys that kill themselves on D and care. Gadsden is good so I'm glad he's back.

I said we had some ok players and those three are probably our best players at this point, but none of them are all-conference type players at this point. Kai would be a whole lot better if he could actually shoot a jump shot. Sims has a ton of potential, I think the most potential on the team. Ty plays hard and is a decent player, but he is undersized and will still get out-muscled by the stronger guards in the CAA. At least he does play with some passion. As I said, the freshman have some potential, but I have no faith that they will be able to develop under this circus of a coaching staff.

They play what they are coached. We have no cutters, back doors or picks anywhere but the top of the key. When is the last time you saw a UNCW shoot a 3 protected by a pick? When we got the lead to 13, Tolefree was picked at the 3 point line and didn't fight through it. Lead right back to 16. We NEVER do that. Our only successful play is over the top pass to Linssen. Everything else is created by each player. We are now seeing what our offense looks like when Cacok isn't in the paint putting up offensive rebounds at an 80% clip.

They did run a double screen for Ty today but I agree we need to get a lot better at much of what you’re saying.

I know what we are doing isn't working very well. But I can't even figure out -offensively or defensively - what things would look like if it was working well.

Can somebody explain to me what the vision in CB McGrath's head is of what should be happening on the floor?

There were big grad transfer bodies available. I (and others) said that we should have used the last scholarship available to get the best available big we could get. I think Brent Jenkins is a fine well-spoken young man, but he was a poor use of the last scholarship.

All things were predicted before the season. We didn't find a suitable experienced defensive minded big (yes I know Dodd is going to be good), CB McGrath cannot coach mid-major talent yet because he comes from the UNC tree, Cacok's absence would be felt not just in the rebounding department and not everything can be blamed on not having 'your guys'.

My next prediction: Our woes continue in a stronger CAA, our Pre-Season ranking looks accurate, fans get tired of watching this ****, CB will be gone at the end of this season and our best players transfer. Can somebody out there actually argue against any of these?

Only whether CB will be gone. We can buy out 1 year but probably not two. But, if he stays, I can easily see our best players transfer. When you run up against well coached teams as a player, you can easily see how you might succeed in another program. However, if our best players do transfer, we may not have a choice.

You can also see the affect of making the right hire from the right system. Charlotte throttled us with a 1st year coach out of UVA making our 3rd. year coach out of UNC look like a rec coach.

Also, if we could do it right now, i'd sit CB and make assistant Rob Burke the HC. I love his passion and enthusiasm.

Buzz got 4 years and Benny got 3.5. He would have been allowed 4 had the awful AD not embarrassed him trying to save her own job. Based on precedent McGrath will get 1 more year, plus we have that UNC road game next year he got us and it would be bad form not to have him there for that series to conclude
