Actually Dave Twardzik would have been a FANTASTIC coach, imo. He applied really wanted the job back in the early 90's, we went with Oliver Purnell instead. It was reported Dave T had Maury's coach and former Monarch Jack Baker and none other than Sonny Allen committed to be two of his assistant coaches. We would have been able to say "running Monarchs".... again. Oh well, that didn't happen. Ollie was good but bolted the first chance he got after only a couple years. Listening to Dave comment on the radio, he knows more about basketball then most of the experts you see on TV. The real deal.

Doesn't make him a bad coach, but sometimes these things just run its course, the culture gets stale, and it is time to change.

How they handle CUSA play will be instructive.

Realistically ODU's path to the NCAAs was set the moment they lost to George Mason: CUSA title or stay home. As galling as the W&M result was, as bad as upcoming losses to VCU and Richmond may be, at this point it's all part of a de facto preseason. And CUSA is very winnable even with this team — UTSA has imploded, WKU is not where they want to be and nobody, with the possible exception of UTEP, has shown any indication that they should be a top-pod team, much less a champion.

If we're seeing this kind of play in January and early February, then it may be time for a serious discussion about the future of the program. If they dust themselves off and make inroads in conference play, it might speak more about the quality of the conference this season, but it also will say something about what ODU can be instead of what it is today.

I agree with all of that Mac. Wish Twardzik had been given an opportunity at that time.

Being a color analyst is a heck of a lot different than being a coach. I love Dave, but has he ever been a coach at any level? Saying he would be a fantastic coach is a stretch.

He was an assistant coach with the Pacers in NBA. I think he once told me he was head coach for one game when the head was suspended.

Thats right, he was with the Pacers for 3 years in the 80s. I just remembered him being in the front office.

But, that doesn't mean he would have been a fantastic college head coach. Maybe, but we don't know because he never had the chance to prove it.

Even if we have to buy him out, Selig needs to go. I say we clean house and offer Jay Harris the AD position.

Ted Alexander to AD and Dave Twardzik for MBB HC. 05-stirthepot

Seriously though, we have seen this gradually coming.
College basketball is ever changing, and we have a coach mired in the 1980s; both technically and philosophically.

Kids today start playing basketball a certain way from a very young age on the playground. They then progress through rec ball, middle school, and high school.
During those years the kids learn and refine their skills, based on coaching and experience. By the time they come out of high school they are pretty much set as to their individual style and ability to function within the framework of team.
It is nothing like the way the game was played 30-40 years ago.

IMHO, we have a coach who is still in that era, and trying to place the square pegs in the round holes.
Someone posted something to the effect that we have a bunch of three star recruits who are torn down and then rebuilt, by the end of the season producing a usable (but not great) product due to the athletic talent of the players and their ability to learn.

Since few, if any of today's kids come out of HS with a ready-to-go 1980s game, we NEED is a coach who will embrace the today's skills and styles, and further hone those from the start. That would produce immediately competitive teams from the players, as well as more up-to-date schemes that would be competitive with the modern college game.
What we need is a coach who can win us the CUSA regular season title and then take the CUSA Tournament championship as well AT LEAST ONCE A DECADE.

fixed it for you.

When your offense makes Blaine Taylor’s offends look exciting, it’s time to rethink your strategy.

Or for odu to rethink its allegiance to such boring basketball.

I know, let's hire Tony Shaver. He was at the ODU-JMU game, he must be interested in our upcoming vacancy.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Only chance of a vacancy is if Jones retires due to health issues. Even if we don't win another game, he will get another year.

I was being sarcastic, but I didn't make that clear, Ever. I don't want Jones let go -- yet. But now that I think about it . . .

I was honestly surprised he didnt retire after last season and go out on a high note. Maybe he's still thinking next season will be his chance to win a game in the NCAAs and then go. I'd be happy with that.

Shaver is probably interested in the JMU job. Rowe is on the hot seat and is probably gone after this season, even though he is somewhat of a legend as a player for them.

Didn't Harry recently write that JJ was in remission?

Edit-- He did write that (link below). He ain't going anywhere due to his health any time soon.

Perhaps, but you know the old saying: You're only truly cured of cancer when you die of something else. Here's hoping that he stays cancer-free until his timely death many many years from now, but it's always a possibility/
