I guess what confuses me is seeing schools like W&M being able to recruit fairly good bigs and other schools able to recruit 3 pt shooters. JJ, it seems, not so much.

How do folks view the recruiting discrepancies? real or imagined?

As compared to CUSA, why would you think his recruiting would be less than stellar?

As for big men, they've had Painter, Stith, Porter, etc. Those guys are way better than any big William and Mary has had besides Knight.

And Nathan Knight was unrated as a recruit. So, it seems a lot of folks missed on his potential.

What experience tells you that? Why hasn't any other program jumped at the chance to hire such a surefire homerun?

Played College basketball at the highest level. Outstanding NBA career, Coached HS and was successful, Learned from a mentor for the last 10 years. Fully understands recruiting and what it takes to build a team. The only question .....can he build a donor coalition and fan base.
Can he recruit is far from answered at this point, so is can he coach. The fact that he played in the NBA means nothing to me. Most of the best coaches in college basketball never played in the NBA, and many who did play in the NBA have proven to be terrible college coaches. I haven't seen anything from him that indicates he is a rising star among coaches, nor has anyone else apparently, since he was looking for a head coaching job and didn't find any takers.

Well it might not mean nothing to you. But it means the world to kids we would like to get into the program. My question is; What have we got to lose? Bryant Stith would be a huge boost and I'm almost positive his hiring would bring media attention much like Chris Mullins brought to St. Johns.
Where's Chris Mullen now? What about Mark Price? Jury is very much still out on Ewing and Stackhouse, and Penny Hardaway is going to have Memphis on probation faster than you can say James Wiseman. In fact, name one NBA star with very little college coaching experience that has been a raging success. That's not even accounting for the fact that ALL of his college coaching and playing has been under JJ, and his personality does not exactly scream recruiting guru. Oh and neither of his sons was exactly a fundamental wonder.

Middle Tennessee state was an 11 seed in this conference.

Our 14 seed is just evidence that while we did win the league for the first time in Jeff’s tenure, the NCAA didn’t respect us at all.

The other 14 seeds included such luminary programs as Georgia state, Yale and northern Kentucky lol

The fact that we're debating seeding shows that New Year's Eve drinking has started early.

Northeastern Spanked JMU in Harrisonburg last night. What has happened to us since we won there?

Jeff coached the offense out of them?

So we’ve been in this conference for 6 years and every team has been between a 13 seed and a 15 seed. Other than 1 middle Tennessee team that had to damn near run the table and was in the top 25 for part of the year. And I think the only reason they got an 11 is because they had just beat Michigan state the year before as a 15 seed. The 14 seed had nothing to do with ODU. That’s where they view this conference. That Middle Tennessee team that was an 11 seed won 31 ******* games by the way. Thanks for proving my point. Lol Clown Shoes

These stats are all public record by the way. Lol. All our next coaching candidate has to do is know how to use a computer. I’m sure all the coaching candidates can’t wait to coach in a conference where all they have to do is win 31 games to get an 11 seed. We should have our pick of the litter. Lol. Y’all are funny.

MTSU was an at large team if they didn't win the conference. They were really good that year and came off a year where they won in the tourney.

Not rocket science why they were an 11.

Jones just had his contract extended just after last season right?

Correct, all conjecture with little substance. Unless something emergent happens (e.g. retirement/health/etc.), Jones will be coaching a MINIMUM 2 more years.

You can blame this on Dr. Selig. He got excited with the 20 win seasons and gave the extension. Our OCC and a very weak C-USA schedule, would lead me to believe, any coach good have done that. Also, JJ's team were transfer lead. JJ is a very poor recruiter of freshmen. We just wait for the next transfer. Right now Oliver is the lead transfer.

That MTSU team was awesome. My point is that the best team the conference has seen in the last 7 years, by far, was an 11 seed. And they beat Mich State the year before and they won 31 freaking games. Everyone is obsessed with the coach but we are set up to fail in this miserable place we call a conference. Before the ball is even tossed up we are screwed. We could hire John Wooden and it’s not gonna matter.

JJ installed his offense. Let's face it, there isn't a ton of time for practice before the earlier games, and we know JJ focuses on getting his defense installed first. Takes a couple weeks for him to get around to the offensive side. Once he did, we saw production that's more in line with what we would expect from JJ. We went from scoring 80 to struggling to get 50.

Not sure if this is sarcasm, but in any event it's not far from the truth.

I think there is some truth to it. JJ might be better off not coaching offense at all, coach defense, let them play, and see where the chips fall.

Jeff needs to coach his team like the head coaches in the NFL do. He needs to have an offensive coordinator and just stay out of the way.

Personally I believe he, like many other coaches, over coaches during games. He yells out instructuion all game long, distracting the players on the court. How much of this constant yelling is necessary? To controlling, diminishes spontaneity.
