My guess is Selig would have shut it down because it would have been an awful look to have your hot-at-the-time head coach leave for (at BEST) a lateral move within the conference. Nebraska basketball to Kansas or Rutgers football to Penn State is one thing, ODU football to FAU is another thing entirely.

But for kicks and giggles: Who would have taken the ODU job if it was open after the 2016 season?

I knows hearing from random people on the interweb is dicey, but Wood knew. If he didn't know, it would be amazing because everyone else did.

So somebody is lying. Either Wood, or the news reports. Interesting. Maybe Wood knew and lied to Broderick about it, and now he's trying to save face. Who knows. I do wish it would go away though. I don't want this story mucking up the coaching search somehow.

Looking at coaching availability at that time, I would guess Lincoln Riley or Ed Orgeron.

BW is in breach of his contract. This “new” fact to ODU is very relevant - and the timing of this leak is convenient/suspicious. ODU could easily take the position they owe BW $0, since he breached his contract and they were unaware until this week. Well played Wood.

That argument would be shot down in a heartbeat

Wilder signed a new contract in March 2017. The "breach" occurred in 2016.

I am a lawyer. There would be no breach of Wilder's contract unless there was a specific prohibition to talking to other schools without approval. Even if there had been a technical breach, you would still have to show damages and there were no damages because Wilder did not actually take the job or damage the University. Moreover, I assume there was a settlement agreement with the University that Wilder would resign and the school would pay him the buy out.

Apparently, there appears to be a specific prohibition to talking to other schools without approval. I know the in-house attorneys I deal with can get creative when a contract has been breached. But, I agree, if a settlement agreement was signed then the matter has been concluded.

Again, he was working under a contract signed in 2017, which is when these buy-outs were negotiated. This incident happened in 2016.

In that case no question about it.

So much for the brilliant Lil' Woody and his 4D chess narrative.
