Unfortunately one of the keys to that happening is more consistency from the Qb position, and if our 2020 Qb is on the roster right now, this is a missed opportunity to get them on the field during the month of December and start competing for that spot. As disappointing as the season turned out, it is not 2001 anymore. If 78 of the 130 teams (60%) get to go to a bowl game, Toledo should never, ever not be in one. Especially in a season with a 3-1 nonconference. But they only have themselves to blame for leaving the door open for this to potentially happen.

If I were Mike O’Brien I’d be on the phone with the AD at the University of Mississippi to try to set up a cash grab game in Oxford. They could’ve kept their in-state neighbors home for the bowl season which would have been our spot, but they found it more important to do that celebration that they already did 2 years ago. We owe them one now, and even if we can’t beat them, it would probably end up being more profitable of a trip than any Bowl game would’ve been unless it was the Pizza Bowl.

you are so right.
after Exams, EMU and Kent, who Toledo barely beat, have the opportunity to get better and passing Toledo by concentrating on football only, like August, for the next couple weeks.

Yea just like UT used December 2018 practices and bowl game to get better for 2019 season 03-lmfao Sorry but I doubt a few more practices 8 months before the next season are really that helpful

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this whenever the "extra practices" thing is brought up. A team doesn't have an extra edge in a September football game because they got to practice a couple times back in December.

They do if they need to decide on a QB for next year…that’s why I specifically cited that position.

Or the December 2017 practices to launch into that magical 7-6 season back in 2018... Oh yeah those practices prepared us enough to also get steamrolled by Appy State...

It's amazing how you guys seem to know more than what the coaches saying publicly on TV about using bowl practices to build depth and experience and using the extra time to work with the younger players..... 05-nono

While I agree with the sentiment, I'm not sure a few practices with Candle and 3 GA's leading drills would be all that beneficial to player development.

Well what do you expect them to say? And let's look at the evidence: how did 2017 bowl prepare team for success in 2018? how did 2018 bowl prepare team for success in 2019?? How did losing both those bowls prepare depth and younger players for the next seasons?

Frankly its recruiting season and the prospects for the 2020 season and beyond are more dependent on that success than a few weeks of limited practices (without OC or DC) to then get destroyed in a bowl.

Miami didn't play in a bowl game in 2018, look at how their 2019 season turned out.

CMU didn't play in a bowl game in 2018, look at how their 2019 season turned out.

This whole extra practice is a myth. The majority of next years coaching staff isn’t even on staff yet. The upperclassmen players are the ones that are going to be getting #1 reps and won’t even be on the damn team next year. Your QB for next year won’t even be throwing in practice to his receivers. OL /DL will be completely revamped. So no, I strongly agree that a bowl game would of been worthless and just exposed the present team and Coaches in a negative light.

Let Candle try to salvage a recruiting class and get some coaches on board. Next years team will be built in the winter and off season in the weight room .

Eh, technically I think they both kind of won by default. Neither had steller years. Miami lost to OSU 76-5 and CMU to Wisky 61-0. No significant wins on either team's resumes. These are the MAC champs.

Toledo is still a coach's resume builder. With solid oversight and recommendtions, good position coaches will want to come to Toledo and the program will be solid. THere's a lot of talent on campus, just needs the right people molding it.

Mentioned by several the idea of Gradkowski as coach. Certainly he would have valuable judgment in selecting position coaches, regardless he comes back to football.

Actually the best team in the MAC this year was probably Buffalo and Kent State might have been second. Miami won every one possession game they played in the MAC, beat Akron by only three points and got absolutely killed out of conference. CMU benefited from a crossover East schedule that included BG and Akron. Everything fell right for them, the Chips and Red Hawks were not very good.

I watched a ton of MAC football this year, clearly Toledo and WMU had the most talented teams. That is of course, counterintuitive with respect to the fact that both schools pay their head coaches the largest salaries and had such lackluster results.

Many MAC programs are relegated to scheduling payday away games for financial reasons, at EMU we certainly have not had a six game home schedule in many years. You guys are much healthier, if Candle can't find decent coordinators for the money you guys pay, cut him loose!

Wea, I like your comments on this board, very intuitive. Not too long ago, I remember your school was thinking of relagating the football program to 1 level down. Is the thought process still there from the administration view point ?

0-12. We would have to forfeit every game for cheating....and likely get severe punishment from the NCAA including no bowl games for at least 3 years and a loss of scholarships. Actually, not much of a punishment given the current trend. So maybe we give it a try. [sarcasm]

No Springs we just built a new building alongside the south side end zone and dropped 5 Olympic sports as well. To leave the MAC would require a huge dollar payout and we simply don't have the kind of money that the University 6 miles west has. Hell we don't have the money you guys do.

We are who we are. A seven win season would be glorious for us, while a disappointment for you. You guys pushed us all over the field in the GB this year yet if our kicker makes a short field goal, we win that game and our season is a HUGE success. We just look at our programs through different lenses.

EMU beats Pittsburgh (or even if not) and I think you will find that you are not who you think you are. Expectations will rise amongst the fan base, quickly. A 5-7 next year will not be greated with "good effort gang." There will be calls for the coachs' heads, refusals to ever go to a home game again (some do go to home games, yes?), and some will be SO "embarassed" by the team they will plee for basketball season to start.

Until that time, enjoy the ride and by whatever means, I hope EMU gets the home win tonight.
