RE: ODU VS VCU GAME THREAD
Let's hope Oliver can play like his former college (Clemson's) football team.

On the upside, Dickens had a much better game yesterday than is typical for him. Let's hope this is a trend that only gets better over time. If so it will be a big help to the team going forward in righting the ship. Improvement from Kalu would also be big.
As it stands right now, if we don't right this ship, we are looking at something around a 10-17 season.

We play 31 games at minimum... but I hear ya. I just want the guys to show improvement. Kind of ironic that we finally get a nice OOC schedule and it’s the worst and least experienced team we’ve had in a long time. . Guess that’s how it goes.

I was basing that on our 27 game regular season

We play a 31 game regular season. The last 4 games (pod play), Are not yet determined. I was wondering where 27 games came from. 2 home and 2 road games. Let’s not get started on the disadvantages of this conference. This is the only conference in the country that doesn’t have the full regular season already set. But it is what it is.

Over under still 18. I think Oliver will help but again, it will take the time for the team to adjust to another component on Offense. I just hope by OOC we have righted the ship for a run in CUSA.

RE: ODU VS VCU GAME THREAD
The only stats I saw for Oliver were his freshman year. Very modest 2.1 pts per game. How will we know if he fails to produce offensively if it's because he just wasn't that good or JJ ruined another prospect?

Does it matter? You're going to blame it on JJ anyways

I think player development or recession is a legitimate factor in determining how good a coach is. Don't you?

He's the head coach. He's running the show. That's where the buck stops Giles.

He certainly is. But, there is no evidence that he kills good shooters.

There is however evidence that his teams have struggled to shoot all the way back to his days at UVA. Bad recruiting philosophy or bad offensive coaching, does it really matter which?
I tend toward the coaching side fwiw.

Well, they obviously go for defense. I wouldn't say bad since they've had very good results but we aren't getting pure shooters that come here and get worse shooting.

Just curious then as to which of the following you would say best describes the reason(s) for Jeff's history of poor shooting players / teams at ODU -
A). Jeff recruits defensive type players and they typically aren't good shooters.
B). Jeff recruits well rounded players that can both defend and shoot, but spends the vast majority of time in practice teaching defense so the offense and shooting suffers due to that.
C). Jeff chastises the players so often if they take what he considers to be a bad shot that the players end up thinking too much about the shot, or simply reluctant to take it.
D). Jeff's offensive style of play isn't conducive to players being able to shoot at a high percentage.
E). Some other reason not listed (explain).

Take this for what it is worth. A guy sitting behind me last night SAID he had been a HS basketball coach. I have no idea if it is true or not. He did a lot of critiquing to the group he was with, and I didn't hear a lot of it.
One thing I DID hear was that when some of our guys shot threes their "ball rotation was terrible".
I don't know enough to even comment on that, but some of you guys surely do.

A.....some of it D.
But, if we were an all offense, no defense team people would complain about something else. I would love to have both a good offense and a good defense.

D... and this goes back to the Blaine era. We have had scores of recruits over the past 15 years that were great shooters and were supposed to be our 3 point specialist and none of them have really panned out that way. Only one that managed to buck the trend and be a good shooter was Freeman and even he wasn't great from 3. I believe it is the offense.
