And while Trump knows he has a stacked jury in the Senate, it appears maintaining that stacked jury is his only strategy. If they expectedly clear him, he still has to lead a country where 50% of the country believes he should be convicted in the Senate. So, if you know these charges are bogus, and you know there are 3-4 witnesses who could completely exonerate you, then why are you exerting executive privilege and denying them the ability to do so?

You gave the reason. Because this isn't a legal proceeding...it's a political witch hunt.

If you put on 3-4 witnesses who completely exonerated Trump, the house would still vote to impeach. So why do it? Save their testimony for the senate. It's like why expose your defense to a grand jury. Remember, Trump is under no obligation to prove his innocence.

This whole thing reminds me of Obama's handling of the birth certificate controversy. Let them get as far out on a limb as they can, and then produce the evidence that chops off that limb.

In an evidentiary proceeding, you have to establish that whatever Trump did was done for political gain. Basically, you have to write a new rule of law that says that when you have reason to believe that an American or Americans are engaged in potentially illegal or corrupt activity in a foreign country, you must ignore that if the object is a possible future political opponent. I don't think they can get there. And I think that a trial in the senate will expose this as the political witch hunt that it was. Of course, that requires the republicans to have some sense, and I haven't seen much of that from them in years.

What digging? "High crimes and misdemeanors" are essentially whatever congress says they are - as long as they can get a majority of the House to agree.

RE: If Trump is innocent
Sorry, stupid thread. Akin to the 'when did you stop beating your wife' question.

If Trump is guilty, why can't you prove it without his help?

Only a fool would help someone even TRY and convict them, innocent or not....

and BECAUSE it is a political, not a legal proceeding, Brookes (and numbers) is absolutely right that 'crime' is whatever a majority says it is and not something in the penal code. In addition, Congress can simply ask for anything and then use it as political ammunition without having to prove anything. The allegation/appearance is all that matters.

Seriously...... the alleged 'crime' is bribery (using public funds) of a foreign government (for political dirt). His personal records would have absolutely nothing to do with that.

Because our system doesn't work that way.

It does concern me how ignorant the voting population is. Take the last big ‘get Trump fiasco’ as an example. Two years of intense investigation by a team of partisan hacks and all they got were process crimes and years old tax cheats that had nothing to do with Trump or their witch hunt. Yet they claim 42 million indictments and people in jail and these idiots glum it up. The same goes here. The congenital liar Schiff throws garbage out there as if it is filet mignon and the idiots glum it up. That’s why I say fool me twice and call me a democrat.

just wait for Nadler and his midget of minions.....

it's now gettin' 'crunked' and shoved into reverse....

and there ya have it...

certain Pelosi's caucus members are now beginning to have reservations....

lmmfao...

g'dam, this shite is too easy....

let's just drive to the fk'n crux of all this bs in relative terms...

when Nixon and Clinton were impeached, a crime existed...

with DJT, a crime has not been established....

muh gps fushion, fisa, mueller, 'impeach the day after nov 4.', etc....

that's what happens when the swamp gets challenged on merit...

ol' boy picked the fight out the gate....it's finally paying dividends with public perception...I've noticed how many never Trumpers on this board got woke over the past 4.5 yrs....

I'm still drooling for it hit the senate floor....let's also not forget Barr and the IG howitzer that will detonate next week...

Odd behavior for the wrongly accused.

There's this thing called executive privilege and by releasing anything that is under that you open up the door for more and more. All Presidents use this with Congress.

If the President released those things then if he refused on anything else those asssholes in congress would point back to...he must be hiding something because he released the papers to help him.

It's why the note from everyone listening in was released. Those are not executive privilege. If they differ from the actual call...we would know it by now. So it's safe to say the notes of the call are a close match to the recorded call.

Odd behavior for the wrongly accused.

What purpose would be served by having those who could easily clear him testify in this house proceeding? This is not an attempt to discover truth, this is a kangaroo court run by a lynch mob. If somebody produced unquestionable conclusive evidence that Trump is innocent tomorrow, the house would still vote too impeach.

The only purpose that would be served by producing some documents or allowing people to testify in this proceeding would be possibly to waive executive privilege across a wider spectrum, and basically issue fishing licenses to every democrat on the hill. That, or possibly reveal defensive strategies and supporting facts that democrats would then have time to attack prior to the senate hearing.

What's going on now is not any kind of objective, reasonable proceeding. It's simply an attempt to get as much as possible on the table to serve the interests of the lynch mob. I am hoping that the senate proceeding will be more of a reasonable, objective one, although I don't hold out great expectations of that.

So far, there's not enough to convict Trump of jaywalking, and I don't think that enough to support conviction and removal will ever be presented. But that's not what this is about. This is the democrats' last shot at getting Trump before the 2020 election, and they're going to do everything they can to make it happen.
