Odom was never gonna get this job. And why would anyone want Chip Long o this staff, ND fired him because their offense got worse every year.

I watch ND a bit and the offense was pretty good. They scored a lot of points and the offensive numbers were good. They just play that difficult schedule and did struggle to move the ball sometimes. I think he would do very well at Memphis.

I wasn't a fan of that either. Yet what's funny is as much as he was touted for his run defense, we were 2 ypg worse this season than last. The pass D however improved by 50ypg this season.

You're right. I think defending against the big play was certainly part of the strategy, which was successful. But if the opposition needs 6 yards, they got it. The dink and dunk pass was there every single time. So predictable. I also didn't think they used Austin Hall as they should this year. Bryce Huff is so good a bad scheme had no bearing on his production, so there is that.
I'll never understand the philosophy of not turning around in coverage either. Sure, you got to keep up with your coverage but you've got to find the ball too.

I still have bad memories of 2018. Any time I saw a pass over the middle caught in the air after 20 yards, I expected it to turn into a touchdown. So it ended up being nice tradeoff.

I feel the same way about turning around, but defensive schemes and the way they practice coverage teaches that/puts them in that position. Though if I were a DC, I would try having my DBs make a play on the ball on passes over 15 yards as much as possible.

Our defense was historically our biggest weakness under Norvell. Since his first season, in a lot of games, it felt like whoever had the ball last was going to win. Thankfully Norvell's offense could overcompensate for our defensive struggles.

For reference, here are Memphis' defensive S&P rankings during Norvell's first three years:

2016 - 74th
2017 - 86th
2018 - 87th

After our AAC championship win (god, typing that never gets old!) our defensive S&P ranking for 2019 is 35th.

One of the reasons I really liked Fuller was his ability to make second half adjustments. A few great examples:

Southern - 1st Half points allowed: 17, 2nd Half points allowed: 7
Navy - 1st Half: 20, 2nd Half: 3
Cincy - 1st Half: 17, 2nd Half: 7

In just one season, Fuller took a lower tier defense to one of the better performing defenses in the country. I was really excited to see what Fuller was going to be able to do in his second season, but thems the breaks. Nothing we can do but make more good hires and hopefully keep that big blue and grey machine running.

This is spot on.....It's rather easy to miss the entire scope of what a Memphis Defense has to contend with....Not ONLY the oppositions attacks are analyzed over and over again....With the "Prolific" Offensive weaponry and plethora BIG-STRIKE touches, our Defense gets tested continuously throughout the games...

Mentioning the after half-time adjustments was an excellent assertion as the results of the first CINDY game this season was a remarkable effort defensively.....That young QB possessed astonishing arm-strength and was remarkably accurate....

Fickell eluded to in the post-game presser the immense amount of TFL (Tackles For Loss) that the defense amassed against them....It was insanely impressive to watch our defense perform against their MONSTROUS offensive line....It was done with the adjustments that had been made during the break.....Which I am very impressed at the genius of Adam Fuller's scheme as it seems as though his strategy was to allow the opposing offenses and QB's to grow/settle into a comfort zone, then strategically attack and tighten up those perceived comfort zones later in the contest at critical junctures.....ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 03-cloud9 in every aspect and was ONLY going ng to improve under his tutelage....We're going to miss his leadership....GR8 Post BTW!

Much of the warm fuzzies some have for Norvell may dissipate quickly after he cleans house.

In all honesty, he brought him/them here. He invested in them and developed them. I would tap them, too. We need the right hire to continue. That person should be able to bring/lock down recruits and/or coaches. It seems petty to start hating on MN now.

Are you saying MN paid their way to Memphis and their salaries? The University paid and allowed him to hire Adam Fuller and others. I think MN could have waited two weeks before hiring Fuller away allowing him to finish up the season. Don't blame MN for leaving however; for me has tarnished his legacy by this hiring.

The University only pays a small portion of the assistant's salaries. A very high level FB booster went to Lunch with MN about 2 years ago - the purpose of that lunch was that MN was asking her for more $ for his assistant's pool. She stroked a check before that lunch was over.

She is one of the best FB boosters we have.

Unlike MN's "off-field issues" this is not message board gossip.

I love the term, "stroked a check". Just sounds so "cool" and "hep".

Former P5 Conference HC coach of year was let go a year ago. He now is available again after being DC at school which let their HC go.

He doesn't need big $ from Memphis - he just needs to keep working and his former HC gig will have to continue paying him 5 mil for next 2 years. Former school has to pay the difference in his salary to the full $5 mil of his K.

Football family - his father was former national coach of year. His father coached with Rex Dockery and Parcells.

He coached against Silverfield this year. And the school who just employed him would not like the idea of him going to Tigers as Coordinator.

Very interesting - we'll see

Kiffin told him he was retaining him - when 1st hired.

Is Lane now a man of honor (for Ole Miss should probably be "honah") - Macintyre decision.

430 yards and 37 points per game against one of the toughest schedules in the country. I'm confused here.

Al Davis fired Kiffin and called him a liar publicly. If you can't work for Al Davis...

LSU and Alabama bombed them.
The other 6 SEC games they gave up 18 pts a game.
Tigers offense lit them up for 13 - Auburn Tigers scored 20
