Cincy brought 300 to 400 last week and they are going to bring 10x the next week? Why?

Maybe the poster meant somewhere between 3 people and 4 thousand people... Because that would be believable.

Have never understood why some of our (so called) fans continually do this. Birmingham Bowl if we lose Saturday? Really? Wanna make a bet?

I was offering up why I think it is so hard to sell out the Liberty Bowl for Memphis football. Memphis being a basketball town is part of that, and thus my explanation earlier.

If, God forbid, Memphis does lose Saturday, what type of bowl you think they will be invited to? There are only so many bowl tie-ins in the AAC. Each time they went to the Birmingham bowl in the past, they were AAC runners-up, so why would this year be any different?

Either Cotton Bowl or the Toilet Bowl.

No. I said between 3 to 4 thousand . UC has an enrollment of over 40,000 . They have fans and it is a days drive .. No reason to be a wise guy.

lol.(sorta)

A phone call and then a snap decision to spend $500,000? Why? Because our fans won't buy tickets to what could be the most important game in our history?

It might happen again, but as things stand, this is literally a once in a lifetime event for Memphians.

Glad to hear you are coming to Memphis and attending the game stamms. Would love to meet you in person

Thanks. I wouldn't.

About 30K

And the conference is making us remove the tarps. Yikes. That will be several thousand empty seats on TV

RE: Crowd estimates for Saturday?
Based on where we are today, it's hard to think it will be more than 40K, most likely 35 to 37 tops.

Keep in mind two things:

1) We started from scratch selling tickets after the game last week
2) No discounted tickets, which is new for us

Nothing to sneeze at with knowing you may have a base of 35,000 who pay full price for a ticket. One heck of a fan base to work with and grow

If this were the case, yes, the game would be a complete sellout and people would be clamoring for tickets. I'm still amazed at how the city went out and spent major dollars to add 16,000 additional seats to the LB thinking that it would bring an NFL team to Memphis, when in reality it was an NFL pipe dream to begin with. Oh well, is what it is, and I think there'll still be a big crowd for the game come Saturday.

the NFL was not pipe dream for MEMPHIS, but it was playing in the LB

A 60,000 Liberty Bowl stadium in 1965 may have gotten us an NFL franchise. But, by 1993/94, it took a new stadium with luxury suites to lure an NFL franchise. Jacksonville getting the 2nd expansion franchise proved that.

I agree. The 1987 addition was a cheap, inadequate move to attract an NFL team. The result was something that did not come close to the new stadiums being built around that same time, such as Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium that opened that same year. Then in 1988 the city decided to sink $60M into a new basketball arena that turned out was too big for MSU but inadequate for the NBA, and ultimately had to be replaced by a $250M arena.

However, the LB's capacity isn't entirely wasted since the bowl game itself typically uses most of the seating. It is too big for the Tigers for now, but how much sense would it make for the city to have two stadiums less than two miles apart - one operated by the city and used twice a year (bowl game and SHC) and another for 6-7 games per year plus a few smaller crowds like Blue-Gray Game, Bandmasters contest, etc?
