What if Norvell is waiting to see how playoff/conference expansion plays out?
Not an original thought and he could obviously still leave, but it's not something we talk about near as where he could possibly go for his next job.

What if instead of waiting for the "best coaching job", he is holding out to see how these expansion routes turn out?

The talk about playoff expansion happening in the next few years continues to ramp up to the point that makes it seem to likely happen soon. Like others to me the most logical would be five spots to the P5 conference champs, best G5 conference champ, and two at-large bids. If it does happen like this, Norvell seems to have the team in a place to where it could make a playoff run every year.

With conference expansion, it's likely to happen after a playoff expansion so it may hold less weight in comparison. That said it is "just" 4-5 years away depending on which conference you look at. He would not have to leave for a Power 5 conference job since his current one would become one.

He seems to have the program running like he wants and can continue to build on it to have consistent success. So what do you think about him just sitting tight and waiting?

Ideally, as much as I hate the $EC, you hope that Georgia beats LSU which would put both in the playoff along with Clemson and Ohio State. You would have the Big12 missing out with either an undefeated team or two 1 loss teams, the ACC Champion getting in without playing a single ranked opponent, and you would have the PAC12 thinking that they will never make it ever again.

And that point, how do you not go to 8? The question then becomes a simple one of the wear and tear of 4 teams playing 1 extra game and 2 teams playing 2 extra games.

Plus, Alabama will potentially miss the playoff this year although I am sure the eggheads on that committee are trying to find a way to get them in even w/ 2 losses. If they lose to LSU next year, Saban may have the playoff immediately expanded to 8..... or at least 4 + Alabama.

The playoff games are usually great, but I think many people are tired of seeing the same teams over and over. It always seems to come down to some combination of Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, and Oklahoma, with an occasional bone thrown to a Washington-type team.

Before Tua's injury, more than a few talking heads were speculating that Alabama could make the playoffs even if they lost the SEC Championship game. Thankfully the Iron Bowl took care of that, but when P5 teams can lose 2-3 games and still be ranked ahead of an undefeated or 1-loss AAC team, something needs to change. I absolutely HATE Central Florida but when they can go undefeated and beat Auburn in the Peach, then go undefeated again the next season and STILL can't get anywhere close to the top 4 spots, that ain't right.

That's a good point, especially when it is 1 extra game for 4 teams and 2 extra games for 2 teams. If you spread the games out that would mean 3 games in 6 weeks for 2 teams; not a big deal, IMO.

I just have the funny feeling that Saban's time at Bama is coming to an end. Wouldn't it be ironic if CMN leaves after this season, and Saban calls it quits after next year?

Wonder what the interest would be like in following Saban at Alabama? Lot's of interest or nobody wants to follow him in that pressure cooker?

Well, we saw how many coaches were pounding the door down to come to Memphis after Cal left.

Yeah I think some of the conferences have gotten tired of how much focus the SEC is given. It's not quite the same level as what G5 team go through, but they get a taste of only being able to play who is on their schedule and being punished for it. At this point (finally) I don't even think they care about wear and tear anymore. It was always a bad excuse IMO. And being able to let the best G5 in the playoff should kill two birds with one stone. People on the G5 side would not have to complain as much about the bias and the people on the P5 side would not have to hear the complaints as much.

I'm looking at it more from the perspective of the playoff than conference expansion since that is likely to happen sooner.

https://foxsportsradio.iheart.com/conten...r-4-years/

Quote:Joel Klatt: “Even though I don’t think it’s good for the sport, but I do think it’s exactly where we’re headed. We’re headed to eight teams and it’s going to happen before the contract is up. I’ve had some conversations with very powerful people who are very much in the know and the reason this playoff is going to expand to eight before this contract is done is because it’s the only way that some of these conferences on shaky ground remain together, namely the Pac-12. If the Pac-12 keeps getting left out of this four-team playoff and then the new media contracts up come, there is likely going to be some shifts in terms of conference realignment. Some of those schools are going to leave because they’re not happy with the Pac-12. The way these conferences hold it together is getting an automatic qualifying spot for its champion. I’m not here to say I ‘THINK’ it’s going to happen, it’s GOING to happen and will happen within the next three to four years.”

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/...ar-BBXwFxY (Taken from a podcast. I listened to it, but he gave no explanation as to why.)

So I wouldn't expect 2020, but I could see 2021 as the earliest.
