Either they are uneducated idiots and protesting colonialism, not understanding the Colonials reference,

But hang on. General Washington fought to end Colonial rule so the name is odd.

He was still a Colonial (subject, war hero) until the first regime of the United States was established and arguably after it.

True. Law students at Washington and Lee circulated a petition to have the aforementioned photos removed from issued diplomas.

If they want to change the name then sure. Don't care. UMass changed ours back in the 70s and we ended up with a much better one.

Revolutionaries? That would be the only reasonable one from the bunch. They should go with something that allows the student section and whatnot to be called the Continental Army though, since that was the name of the forces Washington commanded.

Here’s a better idea: if you don’t like a school’s mascot then don’t enroll there.

If they force the school to drop the nickname, then it's only a matter of time before the school name becomes the follow-up issue.

I guess the SJWs aren't the only ones without knowledge of history.

The army lead by George Washington was called the "Colonial Army." The Americans were colonists and were called "Colonials."

So opposing that name is opposing American history.

I think UMass's name change is the exception, not the rule.

The only two that I have personal knowledge of have been abysmal failures:

Changing from Miami Redskins to Miami Redhawks lost a lot of alumni interest.

Case Rough Riders combined with Western Reserve Redcats to become the Case Western Reserve Spartans. Big yawn. Talk about a missed opportunity.
