Was McCray a good friend of his?

Nope. He's hired two friends so far; Jones and Finwood. And he's hired a lot more than two coaches.

They had worked together at WKU when she was an assistant there. They already had a "friendship".

https://www.dailypress.com/sports/colleg...olumn.html

"Not to be overlooked, and a key component of McCray's arrival in Norfolk: She worked as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky from 2006-08, when Selig was the Hilltoppers' athletic director."

Of the current coaches, we have seen Selig hire replacements in swimming and diving, both tennis programs, field hockey, women's golf, lacrosse, rowing, and volleyball (as well as the sports already mentioned). So even if you included McCray, he's 3 for 11 in hiring friends. That's not a trend.

Weren't you advocating keeping Bobby with a pay cut to save money over the weekend?

Not advocating just stating what I thought was going to happen. It would have been interesting to see if Bobby had not resigned what would have happened. I was fine either way. We are now in for a 4/5 year rebuild process. Plus the $ value just went up. lets see how serious ODAF / ODU really is about football.

I'm not getting this 4-5 year rebuilding process ..... I'm looking at Charlotte's first year coach going 7-5 and heading to a bowl game. I'm not looking for a national championship, but I'd expect immediate improvement with respect to being competitive and starting to be 'bowl eligible' (which is not that hard) in 2-3 years -- don't think that is asking too much with an FBS capable coaching staff. Also, I don't think that it is only $$$ -- that is a part, but I don't think BW would have been any different results wise if he was paid $2M/year.

It will depend on who returns. If everyone returns, next year (assuming a good replacement) will be better and in 2 years will be really good. If players bolt or the hire isn't a good coach, who knows.

So many people here are hung up over what ODU is/was paying BW and JJ, when the only time you get raises in college athletics is to keep suitors from bigger programs at bay as long as you can. Either they get the raise after they say no to someone, or as a preemptive strike after a good season gets them on the radar. Both coaches came in at a low price point (FCS assistant and low-minor HC), and they only way they were going to get big raises was if they performed so well that low-end P5s started sniffing around and you give them enough money to tell Wake Forest and Oregon State to pound salt. Which has not happened.

I threw two names that I had heard about previously from some reliable people.

Shane Beamer- Would love to have him and he is Wood's golden boy in this search. Can we get him? I don't think so.

Willie Taggart- No chance we can afford him, but we will definitely make a play at him.

UNCC had been recruiting at a decent level and had a stable of decent talent. The talent we have will be gone. it will take at least 2 to 3 recruiting classes to get competitive again.

Even though London did not have good success at UVA, I would even consider him before Beamer. London could be successful at an ODU type school.

Hasn't their recruiting rankings been essentially what ours have been over the past 3-4 years?

Charlotte had 12 returning players, but more importantly KEY returning players at important positions.

I'm hoping for 2 things.

1. He can bring over a legit FBS staff
2. The name recognition will ignite donors and sell tickets

I would have a long conversation about his participation in the Wake scandal.

But, Beamer has coached at Tenn, Miss State, South Carolina, VT, Georgia, and Oklahoma. He hasn't been a coordinator (except special teams), but has been hired by some of the best coaches in the business, including assistant head coach by Lincoln Riley. (not that that means a ton)

But, he does have the pedigree to be hired.

I always liked London as a class act, but not sure that a UVA retread is what ODU Football needs. He might be like BW, great at FCS, but can't translate that success to FBS.

Over the past 5 seasons, they have finished on average at 11.4 in CUSA recruiting. Over the same stretch, ODU is 12.2 in average finish. So yeah, the gap shouldn't be that big.

Plus, Bobby said we have the talent to be a "championship caliber" team next season with all of our returning talent. So I do expect to see significant improvement. 6 wins might be too much to hope for, but Id like to see at least 4 wins next season and bowls from that point forward.

Odd since the same poster has continuously harped on how bad the ODU recruiting is by using that same metric.

It means a ton. Would be a huge "get" for ODU in perception, recruiting, filling seats & donations. There is a lot of cache working for the hottest/most sought after college head coach.

One thing Bobby did not do was sacrifice the future to try to save his job next year. There are guys that could have played this year that sat to ensure they got redshirted. And also had the discussion with Kumah to sit him down. They have some really good young talent that is expected to come back.

Why go after W&M, what about JMU's HC.

For the removal of Willie Taggart, Florida State had to pay over $20M in buyouts, for two years...wow
