Absolutely impossible to stay in Division I if you want your suggestion to come to fruition.

Per the NCAA, Schools must field teams in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with at least two team sports for each gender. More than just Title IX.

While at South Carolina Shane Beamer signed the #1 recruit in the country.

RE: Shane Beamer
Some can make the argument that Shane Beamer isn't fit for a head coaching job currently because he's never been an coordinator or that he has spent most of his coaching career as a position coach and probably isn't head coach material which could all be true.

Bobby Wilder before coming to Old Dominion spent nearly 20 years as a position and eventually an offensive coordinator coach at the FCS level. We hired him to build a program with no head coaching experience.

I definitely can see the upside to Shane Beamer for us. His coaching tree is huge compared to Bobby Wilders. Not only his connection to head coaches and good assistant coaches but he is also friends with many NFL players for the better part of 20 plus years now. I have no doubt if he needed defensive advice he could call on Bud or any body associated with him. Bobby Wilder mostly had his Maine buddies to associate with while Shane's network connections seem endless.

Is he a good hire I don't know, is he worth flirting with helll yeah!

Shane is currently at the top of the list for us, but that doesn’t mean we will end up with him. It’s pretty known now that he’s the guy they are after though.

Beamer certainly has connections. To suggest that Wilder mostly had his "Maine" buddies would seem to minimize the connections he made at ODU. Did you happen to know that he's extremely close to James Franklin?

Beamer certainly has connections. To suggest that Wilder mostly had his "Maine" buddies would seem to underscore the connections he made at ODU. Did you happen to know that he's extremely close to James Franklin?

RE: Shane Beamer
There are a couple of risks with Beamer or anyone else on the higher end of pay. Not arguing against or for, but here are a couple of plausible scenarios:

1. We pay him $1M per year on a 5-year contract and go 4-8 next year and 2-10 the following year.
2. He shows moderate success... say 5-7 next year and 6-6 the following year, the fans and donors really don't come back, and we are still hemorrhaging money.

If we hire on the cheap under the same scenario we may get the same results. Still empty seats, still no revenue being generated.

Fact or opinion? Seems a lot of people with pretty good credentials think he's a top candidate.

Especially if he's hearing that Jerry Jones is about to make a run at his current boss. He'd have to be thinking about a possibility to remain in the Big 12, IMO.

To me, that's a complete indicator that he's the #1 target at the very least

RE: Shane Beamer
Given how hard he lobbied to keep the job, I'm not surprised he's a little bitter. Clearly, he did not resign, that's just being polite.
