I’ve been reading up on this guy and his credentials are really quite impressive. A wide range of P5 coaching responsibilities and experience, a guy we could likely afford, and someone that may want to return to Virginia. And It doesn’t hurt that his dad is a coaching legend which may help to open a few recruiting doors.
Anyone see negatives with this guy?

He apparently makes $470K as an assistant HC/tight ends coach in the Big 12. What would “affordable” look like here?

Here's my test: Assign him the name Shane Smith. Check his credentials. Do they pass muster without the Beamer name?
I think they do. He's definitely worth a look. If he can keep Stinespring, even better.

WakeyLeaks, but in a world of Joe Paternos, Bobby Petrinos, and Art Briles, it's a relatively minor speedbump.

If we're not paying very close to $1M, we are not competitive. If they can't afford that we are in an untenable situation with football. BTW, we need to be able to pay about the same in basketball whenever it is time to replace JJ. The athletic program needs to figure out what it is going to make that happen in those two sports. Fortunately, they have at least a few years to worry about the basketball side, but all decisions need to be made with that understanding. No more cheaping out. No more crying poor. They aren't poor compared to our peers, and I expect them to figure out how to compensate their coaches like the top level mid major that out budget, fan support, and facilities say we are.

Not sure I agree with that. Hes never been a coordinator. How do we know how he will react leading anything? Coodinators and head coaches are leaders, Beamer had never been more than a position coach. (And no assistant head coach does not mean anything).
Hes coach at impressive places and has a Dad that did things.......but I would be skeptical. I wouldnt hate the hire but not everyone can be a leader.

Cut non-revenue programs (while staying title mine compliant) and use all the extra money to invest in the only two sports anyone actually gives a crap about.
Stretching the athletic budget so thin has lead to mediocrity in everything.

Shane Beamer is a question mark.
Even with the cloud of the Wake Forest scandal aside (I happen to think that is a big deal) https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc.../95764120/
it has taken him almost 20 years just to achieve the rank of Assistant Coach (OU) when the average time from grad assistant to HC is like 12.36 years, if it is indeed going to happen at all.
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10...4117746498
With that said, BW's current compensation is around $750,000, so we could almost double what Shane makes (ca $470K) without adding any strain to the existing budget.

I think this is a very fair assessment. I'm not really sure I agree totally that time as a coordinator better prepares you leadership-wise to be the CEO of a program, but I think the question as to what kind of leader he will be is a fair one.
I don't know if Beamer would be the best candidate, but like you, I wouldn't hate the hire. I'm far less familiar with football coaches than I am on the basketball side, so take anything I post regarding a potential search with the understanding that I'm an idiot.

This isn't going to happen, so it's moot, but I'd rather drop football than do this.

And from last month:

The question mark is that he "worked (and studied under coaches)" of that ilk, and yet was never even mentioned for a potential coordinator opportunity, is of concern. A position coach does not ordinarily have the "management" experience to go directly to HC. Even now, he is not a coordinator, he is a multiple position coach with a title shared by another coach (Ruffin McNeill), both under an Associate HC at OU.

Amen. I just know the **** that’s shoveled by this administration on a yearly basis about how badly they’re hamstrung by folks up in Richmond.
If they think we’re poor now, see what happens when you gamble and lose on BW again.

At least with a coordinator you are leading a unit. You are making decisions.
Its more skepticism than it is hating him. When you have that last name, its easy to get a job.
The problem is whoever is the coach next year will likely have huge improvements so it will be tough to gauge how much is related to coach.

Shane as the new OC. Uncle Bryan could help smooth the transition.

Dabo was never more than a position coach before taking over at Clemson... Just sayin'. Go hire the person that seems like is the best fit regardless of all the other random criteria. You can put yourself in a box pretty quickly and ignore good options if you get too carried away with this checkbox or that checkbox.

The point is, if we have to drop diving just to be a little more successful in football, then hell yea we shouldn’t have an FBS team.

Thats true and the reason most didnt like the hire. And there are exceptions to every rule. And Dabo Was also an elite recruiter...maybe the best around.

We don’t have unlimited resources, how does this make any sense in your mind?
If it allows us to hire better coaches that are capable of winning and drawing it more fans it’s a win win.
