Another headscratcher. He got them to .500 in a power conference while in the middle of a recruiting desert. BC's loss will be someone else's gain very soon, I'm sure.

If you were doing the hiring at South Florida, and considering coaches on the rebound from getting fired, would you prefer Addazio, Odom, or Taggart?

Addazio and it's not even a close call.

RE: Boston College fires Steve Addazio
If BC gave him even mediocre support by ACC standards I think he'd field a 8-9 win team most years. He beat half the conference every year despite having the least support for football institutionally of any team in the ACC. If you fire Addazio and the next hire isn't followed up in paragraph two with "twice the recruiting staff" and "twice the support staff" and "twice the recruiting budget" then I don't think it really matters who they hire. Even if they get lucky and land the golden goose they won't keep them. As soon as it is clear the BC FB HC is an asset teams that play for real when it comes to assets and capital will pluck off the BC FB HC like he was on clearance at Big Lots.

If BC do not have the support but UConn does? Should the ACC trade with AAC? BC get less fan support in the bowls than Boise State. They should not be considered a P5. UConn at least get more fan support. Or ACC gets Cincinnati while BC goes to AAC and UConn rejoins in all sports.

So it appears unanimous on the BC board that they agree it was time to move on.

RE: Boston College fires Steve Addazio
Here is the (likely) final record of football hires by ex-Miami and BC AD Brad Bates:
1) Shane Montgomery - Fired (overall record 17-31 after taking over for a coach who went 48-25)
2) Mike Haywood - Won the MAC, left for a P5 job, almost immediately fired for domestic violence (10-15); this one almost doesn't count for him since our president vetoed his initial choice Curt Mallory, who's 12-22 at Indiana State
3) Don Treadwell - Fired (8-21, but basically 8-28 since he was fired after five games and we went winless under the interim)
4) Steve Addazio - Fired (44-44)
Overall record of coaches hired by Bates at the institution he hired them to: 79-111 (or 119 losses if you count the extra ones). That's pitiful, and doesn't even account for two Miami seasons of 5-19 in Treadwell's aftermath.

If FSU fires a coach for going 6-7, 7-6, 6-6... I get it. But BC? I wonder what they think their ceiling is?

I guess BC is tired of being called the 76ers.

What is BC's ceiling? How about this?
BC's W-L Records
1999: 8-4
2000: 7-5
2001: 8-4
2002: 9-4
2003: 8-5
2004: 9-3
2005: 9-3
2006: 10-3
2007: 11-3 (ACC Champ Game)
2008: 9-5 (ACC Champ Game)
2009: 8-4
Since 2010 - BC has been mostly a 7-5 team (with a couple of down years thrown in.)
For us BC alums and fans - I don' think it is too much to ask that we get back to this kind of performance. How can ANY fanbase be satisfied with constant .500ish seasons??
Surprisingly, there are a couple of people in this thread asking about BC's support for the program. Really? They just built a $52.6M indoor practice facility which is one of the best in the country, to go along with a dedicated FB building and a 44,500 on campus stadium. SA was reportedly paid in the middle of the pack for ACC coaches. The Assistants are also paid well. Not too much to expect better than continual .500 performances. I would expect the new coach to have a bump up in salary (obviously depending on who it is).
Today's move firmly demonstrates BC's support for the program. If that wasn't the case, it would have been easy to just coast with SA - who is a good guy, runs a clean program, and builds good character players - and pile up .500 seasons with annual bowl invites. BC needs more. IMO, it needs all the positives that SA brought - with better performance.

He went 6-6 in a rebuilding year on defense and a year he had to play ND. I guess what’s done is done, but I’d have kept him at least one more year. I think he earned that much.

Actually, I remember those years very well. IIRC, BC had an all-star coaching staff at the time (but couldn't keep the band together). If the school is willing to grab a staff like they had back in the early 2000's - and do what it takes to keep them together for a long run - then yes, they can at least get to 9 wins a year (Clemson isn't down like they were back then, and you have to figure FSU is going to come back soon).
FWIW, I'd very much like to see the BC return to competitive level in the Notre Dame games - those were always fun. BC/VT games were NOT fun back in those days... and yet the Hokies still lost to the Eagles THIS year!

So he was Tom O'Brien without any top 25 finishes?
