Interesting about Oregon. If they win, they go to the Rose Bowl. If they lose, and Georgia loses, they likely go to the Rose Bowl. Heckuva consolation prize.

I noticed earlier today that (like you) Massey has Rice ranked just behind both North Texas and Middle Tennessee.

I don’t have enough data to argue that Rice should be ranked higher. But from what I’ve seen, that’s my view. Maybe 110-112 or so? That’s quibbling a bit.

It's very tight among those three teams, with the additional win being the difference. However, there is a big gap down to UTSA at 120, even with the additional win by the Roadrunners and their win over Rice. Their schedule was just too weak.

What about your system do you think favors Wisconsin?

Just curious.

Several factors:

1. B1G is having an outstanding year as a conference - I have them a close 2nd this season to the Big 12. Thus, conference games do not weaken their strength of schedule;

2. Only bad loss was by 1 point to Illinois, a decent 6-6 team (that played horribly on Saturday, though); only "bad win" was by 9 over Northwestern;

3. They had 2 very impressive wins over good teams - beating both Michigan and Minnesota by 21 points;

4. Their 3 non-conference games were poor, as a whole, but did not include any FCS opponents as SEC schools do - Central Michigan (at #68 the highest rated MAC team), Kent State (also 6-6, but #94) and South Florida (4-8 and #93);

5. To compare Georgia, they had a disastrous loss to South Carolina (at home), and their best win (by 6 over Notre Dame at home) was roughly equal to Wisconsin's fourth best win (by 38 over Michigan State).

That being said, the difference on my system among Wisconsin, Georgia and Utah (4-6) is minimal.

...but Wisconsin has 2 losses and plays in the much weaker Big10 division. Moot point since the Badgers will likely get rolled by Ohio State in the Championship game next weekend.

Georgia's schedule:

at 108 Vanderbilt
FCS Murray State (4-8)
83 Arkansas State
8 Notre Dame
at 40 Tennessee
74 South Carolina
41 Kentucky
13 Florida
59 Missouri
at 15 Auburn
36 Texas A&M
at 105 Georgia Tech

Wisconsin's schedule:

at 93 South Florida
68 Central Michigan
14 Michigan
89 Northwestern
94 Kent State
45 Michigan State
at 56 Illinois
at 1 Ohio State
17 Iowa
at 61 Nebraska
79 Purdue
at 16 Minnesota

Wisconsin did not play North Carolina, as I wrote earlier - it was 8-4 Central Michigan, the best team in the MAC this season.

Wisconsin played 4 teams among the top 20, Georgia only 3. Also, Georgia played 2 games against teams worse than 100, plus a bad FCS team. Wisconsin had none.

I'm not sure how the Big 12 can be considered the best conference in the country. Do they even have a single NC win over a top-25 team? I know Baylor has improved a lot since they played us, but if that's your best (or tied for your best) team in your conference, I'm sorry - you're not that good of a conference.

Georgia is in the (far) weaker division in the SEC.

I expect Ohio State to destroy every team. I would expect them to crush Georgia, as well. The Buckeyes are far superior to any other team.

There are no teams as bad as Arkansas, Vandy, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, etc in the Big 12. That’s what helps them.

Heck, even Kansas has a win over bowl bound ACC team BC.

1. Outstanding non-conference record (24-6);
2. Fewer bad teams, as a percentage, than any other conference;
3. Massey Composite also has them as the top conference.

Big 12 (rankings of teams):

7-10-26-29-31-33-54-71-80-101 (44.2)

6/10 (60%) of teams in top 40%; zero in bottom 20%

B1G

1-4-9-14-16-17-35-45-56-61-79-89-96-110 (43.7)

8/14 (57%) of teams in top 40%; 1/14 (0.7%) in bottom 20%

SEC

3-5-11-13-15-36-40-41-53-59-74-76-108-116 (46.4)

8/14 (57%) of teams in top 40%; 2/14 (14%) in bottom 20%

If you want to argue that the 3 conferences are basically even, I won't quibble. But to write off the Big 12 because you want to ignore the entire conference is not factually sound.

Conference (Rating on my system)

1. Big 12 (27.5)
2. B1G (26.6)
3. SEC (25.0)
4. PAC 12 (12.9)
5. AAC (9.3)
6. ACC (5.8)
7. MWC (-6.9)
8. SBC (-11.5)
9. CUSA (-28.1)
10. MAC (-31.3)

As best as I can tell, the B1G is 2-0 non-conference against top 25, the Big 12 is 0-2, and the SEC is 2-4. That's hardly a large sample size - 10 games out of 140 (it would be 142, except that 2 of the games were Iowa State vs. Iowa, and Kansas State vs. Mississippi State).
