RE: Helton OUT at USC- Maybe???
USC was never going to make a move unless they got a big name like Meyer, Stoops, or Franklin. They weren't going to replace Helton after an 8-4 season with the G5 Coach of the Month or some P5 coordinator who gets nice write-ups from sportswriters. If USC is 4-8 next year instead of 8-4, that's a different story.

If USC is 8-4, he's absolutely gone. 10-2 bare minimum.

And like what bronconick posted, they get blown out by Alabama, the Helton watch starts the next day.

He may be staying, but he has probably been neutered as far as future recruits are concerned. Once the word on the street is that you are perennially going to be on the hot seat, how do you land the best recruits?

The watch never stops at a place like that, unless you win like Pete Carroll or John McKay.

I'll bet USC sounded out donors about Helton's buyout and were told, we'll give you the $20 million to get rid of Helton if you've got Meyer or Franklin on deck, but not if you're just hiring a search firm to grab some guy who happened to have a good team this year.

Resident USC chiming in.

I speak for 60% of us when I say this was devastating to our program. This was a statement move by the new PC-president to tell us that USC is becoming like the rest of California. Many of us have unfortunately just given up at this point and accepted that is a real-time fall of a titan.

RE: Helton OUT at USC- Maybe???
Actually I think the new AD didn't want to complicate his first year on the job with a FB coach search. Unless Helton is given some massive long term contract, my suspicion is the firing will come next year. Give them a year.

I suspect Chip Kelly is safe at UCLA for the same reason, even though there are some rumors he wants to be bought out

UCLA and USC being a mess in Football is killing the P12. These should be top 20 and top 10 programs respectively.

RE: Helton OUT at USC- Maybe???
the clay helton death watch is killing their recruiting as well

they were #20 last year which was their lowest ranked recruiting class since at least 2009 (and probably back further I stopped looking) and the #78 this year is a sure sign of players not wanting to go to a place where they are 99% sure the coach will not be there at this time next year

plus USC might be a bit short on cash because they can no longer charge "athletes" wealthy parents to get them admitted to school

No offense but unless you are close a our program it's hard to understand how political this was. Clay Helton was retained for the same reason he was hired. And for the same reason he was not fired after multiple blowout losses, a 5-7 season, and blunder after blunder.

The school has been a PR mess for years. It's been scandal, after scandal, after scandal, and those up top had enough. Clay Helton is exactly what they want right now.

IDK man... seems to me if USC was just going to go all PC they would have hired someone other than Bohn... a Hispanic woman like Reed-Francois at UNLV, or someone else that checks all those boxes.

The other thing that doesn't make sense is that I would have assumed (if your theory is correct) that when Bohn sat down for his interview they would have said "Look, you are going to get a lot of chatter from donors to hire Urban Meyer, but we want you to know right now you'll never get the approval from us". I would only assume that if Bohn knew that he would not have control on whom he could hire, he would not have taken the job. He would have stayed at Cincinnati with multiple successful programs and/or taken another job elsewhere that will give him more autonomy.

I think the more likely scenario is the right candidate is not available this year, but maybe they will be next year. The team is 8-4, let's not leap to make just any hire... let's make sure we get the right person for the job.

I agree that the school has been a PR mess for years. Hiring ex-athletes like Mike Garrett, Pat Haden and Lynn Swann to run the athletic department is a huge part of their problem at USC. Swann was the guy that added three years to Clay Helton's contract. It wasn't like anyone was trying to steal Helton away from USC.

It was reported that it would cost almost $20 million to fire Helton and his staff. I agree with Stu that with the mess that he inherited, Bohn is probably better off saving some money and further complicating his job in the first years with a coaching search. I don't think Helton is a bad coach but he does have to improve the recruiting of athletes on the defensive side.

As for Chip Kelly, with AD Dan Guerrero retiring next July, nothing will happen with him until a new AD is hired. Kelly has another year, unless he wants to quit. There is no reason for UCLA to offer him a buy-out.

If they tried to get and were turned down by Meyer/Stoops/Franklin, they’re better off waiting a year for a home run hire rather than wasting 4 years on a least-of-all-evils pick.

I agree with this. But I think to get the HR hire they need to establish the culture and work environment that a top notch coach would want to work in. That is on the new AD at USC (and next year at UCLA) to establish. Clay Helton is a decent enough tread water coach you can accept while that culture is built.

To try and just get a big name to bail them out is a lot like the NY Knicks in basketball, thinking a hero will save them, and that their brand is all they need to to be a lure. Those days are long gone. You need more than the name.
