Besides the inability to ensure that the person signed up is doing the work? The fact that these are GRADUATE classes.

It's becoming more common

It is a smart move for Burrows, especially when he probably has the NFL in his future

As anyone that went to FSU knows well. At least we didn't lose a football national title over this.

I don’t see the problem in online courses if you’re a single parent, have disabilities, deployed or a professional looking to finish or get another degree (like an MBA) for better career opportunities. The problem I see here is why an athlete a doing this.

Travel and practice schedule. It makes a lot of sense TBH. Chances are the exams must be proctored at the university's testing center or using a virtual proctor, so while someone else could be doing any coursework for him, he'd still have to do the exam.

Totally not an issue.

Most schools have online programs, they have to be accredited just like the face to face classes.

E.g., this semester I am teaching both a face to face MBA class and an online MBA class. Different programs but the same standards.

I do not see how it is good enough for those people but not for the athlete. Either the program is good enough to be accredited and for you to get a degree or it isn't. Some people will take online classes because they just like it better. Others like me prefer taking classes in person because it works better for us.

I do think that there is a benefit to being on campus but it is not really degree related (for instance for some it is their first time away from home) but this guy is a graduate student so I do not see campus life being a big benefit to him specifically.

Omaha's basketball team just got back from a road trip where they had to go from Omaha, to Dayton, to Pullman within a 48 hour span. Online classes would be a godsend in that situation. If I was coaching a team I'd try to get all of my athletes to do it.

Nothing wrong with them.

While we’re at it, what’s wrong with canceling football and only sponsoring e-sports?

But I'm sure it says "Burrow" in the login log! Surely you're not suggesting LSU would stoop to having academic ringers take online classes for its football players...

It’s a great thing for any college athlete’s schedule

It’s also an incredibly easy way to cheat for the athletes that can’t pass classes on their own and you’re naive if you don’t believe pretty much every school has figured out this perfect new solution to keeping the dumb but talented guys academically eligible

54% of professors of online classes are confident in the methods their institution uses to verify online student identities.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/dereknewton...8ba4bb4491

That's for the general student population, not even for the athletes. Here's a live look at the star running back for a college taking Anthropology 101, while also being the starting shooting guard taking Remedial Algebra.

I was confused too. Why is this a big deal? He's already graduated from Ohio State and is just taking these as graduate classes. My wife is getting her masters degree right now and it's exclusively online.

He looks more like a power forward in basketball than a running back in football. JK - just being silly. But to play off your original premise, maybe he is both? 03-drunk

Is she on scholarship and living in a dorm? Does she get free meals, snacks, medical treatments and team gear to wear? What's her quarterback rating?

Colleges are going to do a lot more online. The change will be slow, but it is going to happen. How much benefit do you get from being in person in a 300 person class?

That was kind of my point. He's probably also the star center for the women's basketball team, too.

Here is just one example of why online education is largely a farce:

https://prairiestate.edu/academics/onlin...ation.aspx

Quote:In accordance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA)(Public Law 110-315), Federal Requirement 34 CFR §602.17(g), and HLC Policy Number FDCR.A.10.050, institutions offering distance or correspondence education must have processes to establish that the student who registers in such courses is the same student who participates in and receives academic credit.

Quote:The following institutional practices are identified by the HEOA/HLC as acceptable for verifying student identity:

A secure login and password
Proctored examinations
New or other technologies and practices

Quote:Secure Login and Password
During the application for admission process, student identity is vetted in accordance with standard practices. Here, a network account is created for all credit-seeking students. A letter is mailed to them providing students their username and password.

Quote:Proctored Examinations
Currently, there are very few online faculty who use proctored exams. Using proctored exams makes the course a hybrid course and, as such, the information on proctored exams would need to be clearly presented to students as part of the Master Schedule. However, the use of proctored exams is clearly an option for faculty and may become more important to consider given the increasing attention on student authentication. The Student Success Center’s make-up testing services provide faculty with the option of conducting proctored exams for students living within the region. For students living outside the region it would be the student’s responsibility to locate a proctored testing environment and pay any fees that may be incurred. Many community colleges and higher education institutions have comparable testing facilities that could be used for proctored exams. As with other information concerning online courses, clearly conveying this information to students would be a high priority.

Quote:Faculty
Faculty teaching courses through distance education methods hold primary responsibility for ensuring that students comply with identify verification policy. As technology and personal accountability are not absolute in determining a student’s identity, faculty members are encouraged to design courses that use assignments and evaluations that support academic
integrity. Changes in student behavior such as sudden shifts in academic performance or changes in writing style or language used in discussion groups or email may indicate academic integrity problems. Instructors routinely should use a variety of assessment instruments. As best practices suggest, faculty should routinely ask students to share in appropriate ways important ideas learned from texts and references, require research projects and paper assignments to be submitted in steps, and/or use Turnitin.com.

So, to summarize, it is considered an acceptable level of integrity that a student uses their own login information (with their password) to ensure identity, or students can arrange for a testing center to do so. Furthermore, it's the faculty member's responsibility for ensuring that the integrity is maintained. Only the most naive person on the planet doesn't see that this is absolutely ripe for abuse. Look no further than the fake classes at North Carolina, the proctors who have been paid to write papers for students, or even the fake SAT stuff that was abused and in the news recently.

Online education is as almost big of a farce as those predatory for-profit universities...
