Issac seems to be a great teammate, but he does not have a D1 arm by any means. Jairus does not either, but working him into the wildcat and also at wide receiver makes him incredibly valuable. Spring ball will give us a better look at Jackson, who is an incredible physical specimen and Machado who tore up the West coast Jucos. Hutchinson has a good arm and is the obvious number one right now.

2020 FB Player Personnel Items
(12-05-2019 11:09 AM)FrankAnderson Wrote:  I wonder if Grissom would make sense as a kick/punt returner? He's obviously an electric athlete. He's tough to bring down. Obviously there's a higher risk of injury, but right now we have Drummond returning most kicks and he could also get injured (and as a starting WR, that could be more challenging to the offense). Kent State used Dri Archer for returns and he had several return TDs (including one against us in 2012...).

Maybe it wouldn't work, and I'm just day-dreaming of Grissom burning entire teams for TDs on punt returns.

Would love it but with our “fair catch” philosophy on kickoffs might not change much.

Agree.

Steibeling seems to get a lot of love here because of his one game vs. BG when he was pressed into service.

My take: Hutchinson starts as #1. Jackson is a compliment because his style is different than Hutchinson (ala Wiegers and Glass).

Grissom is a multi-talented athlete who played QB in H.S. I wonder, too, if he'll see more time at receiver given the graduation losses at that position. He wasn't going to beat out Arthur Jackson, anyway (he'd be damn good to do so).

I saw some HUDL tape on Machado. Loved his nifty feet but not impressed by his accuracy. We'll see. IF he becomes a good thrower, he can be like Crum.

This discussion probably illustrates the superior progression Creighton has made in the skill players the past two years. We were losing a great QB, Roback and all of our talented wide receivers, Bailey, Porter and Niupalau after 2017. We were discussing replacing them with Stiebling throwing to Daugherty and Holder. We were great on the D-Line with possibly the greatest DE tandem in EMU history of Harris and Crosby coming back, so the coach went out and got some skill position guys.

Then Mike Glass happened, we recruited two great athletes who played QB in high school and got two fabulous freshman named Drummond and Williams. Also we hit gold with Juco Arthur Jackson who probably is the best receiver in the Creighton era as Steve hinted at. Is Machado the next Glass or is Jackson his heir apparent? Hutchinson obviously is competent as well. The point is that we are light years ahead of where we were two years ago in terms of skill players.

Now the coach just needs to adjust his recruiting budget once again. Great lineman like POC, Harris and Crosby just don't appear on campus. I think he realizes that and the issue will be fixed soon.

I 10000% agree. Talent in the MAC is very even throughout. A player like Grissom needs to be involved as a difference maker. Even if to throw defenses off as an option not getting the ball. I would be shocked if CC did not use him more next year as he was loyal to Glass and Shaq

I'm not sure what position Grissom is to play?

We've described attributes but how do they translate to a specific position?

If he is a QB, didn't we have an all-MAC QB by the name of Mike Glass???? 03-idea

I'm not sure how C.C. would have played him at QB more than he did.

What is his best position: QB, WR, RB, TE, etc.????>?

I agree that playing QB was probably the fair amount this last year but I would have had packages that have him at half back, slot receiver, wideout. I would have tried to run screen plays for him at least 20 times this season. A guy like that needs the ball in space

BTW, I have printed out the 2-deeps, participation charts, etc. etc. from the EMU website.

AFTER the season is over, I might take a stab and trying to work up 2-deeps for both sides of the ball. Then we can add the JUCO signees and work in the redshirted frosh and see what the team might look like in 2020.

I might add that the first signing days are coming up soon. So we'll have a better idea of the new talent.

Seeing Miami return the opening KO all the way to the 2 yd line is frustrating. EMU plays it a little too conservative on KOs and would've called for a fair catch. EMU needs to take more risks and return some kicks. Yes, there will occasionally be poor field position and maybe even a fumble, but there also a chance for great things to happen.

Nickle I cannot disagree. Some coaches have a special emphasis on special teams, Urban Meyer and Frank Beemer to name two. Chris, however, seems to view them as necessary evil activities. His return guy is sure handed instead of a burner as he plans for the fair catch. He apparently holds a strong belief on this and I have seen him defend it in interviews.

I do know that opponents returned 25 kicks for 594 yards an avg. of 24 yards per kick while we returned 15 for 254 yards a 17 yard avg. In other words they had more than double our kick off return yards. Of course those statistics can be misleading, a kick caught at the goal line and returned 20 yards actually produces a 5 yard net loss vs. a fair catch. A return also introduces the possibility of a blocking penalty or fumble as well. I presume that coach has done the analytics and unlike us, thinks the fair catch is not only the safest but the best option. Now without Glass next year, driving 75 yards down field might not be as easy and a big return could be nice occasionally.

Excellent. He has a very impressive tape on Hudl. Nifty runner, can do KRs, and very willing and impressive blocker.
