Interesting but nothing that hasn't been discussed before. In its current configuration, Protective Stadium will not be able to hold the Classic and yes the Classic truly draw over 60,000 + easily. And that's not even talking about the week long insane tailgating and where in the heck would the RV's be able to park?

Maybe the Classic will try a year at Protective after the completion of the current contract to see how it would work out. But I eventually see it moving back to the campuses unless a city like Atlanta or Nashville decides to bid for it a throw a huge sum of money at it. And if that happens it would be a huge black eye to the City of Birmingham.

I'm sure the city is working on a deal to keep the Classic. But they still have to address the issue of where the game will be played which I'm sure will be at Legion Field after 2022. I honestly don't see LF going anywhere anytime soon.

Me, either. As an aside Alabama A&M and Alabama State is getting more money than they have ever received. Under the previous administrations monies allocated to the two universities went through a series of middlemen or organizations so that no one ever really knew what the universities actually received. Under the current administration the middlemen were largely eliminated with the allocated funds going directly to the universities...

Birmingham would have had a better chance at keeping the game if the designers of the new stadium had spoken to the presidents of A&M and State and gotten their input. They ignored the largest yearly event with the largest economic impact. Their input might not have changed the design at all but to ignore and disrespect your customers is no way to run a business. University presidents and trustees have egos and what is perceived as an intentional slight will make it more likely the game goes the way of the iron bowl moving to the campuses.

And that's great. But if Legion Field is not an option after 2022 and beyond then it's not going to matter what the city offers A&M and State to continue playing in Birmingham if there is not a facility big enough to host the game.

Again, I think it's far fetched to believe the Classic would leave the state but don't you think Atlanta would easily matched to the 2 mil offer to State/A&M for the Classic to come there?

And for the Blazer fans rolling there eyes at this topic but this is a city issue, not UAB.

So you're saying the Classic will be cornered by the city and have no choice but to play in Birmingham? Once upon a time the games were held at the individual campuses before they decided in 1944 to hold the game in Birmingham.

I agree with you that Classic is too big of an event to hold at campuses, but I think the event organizers of the Classic does have some alternatives to work with besides the City of Birmingham.
