Well it depends on how you look at it. From the perspective of schools that are not traditionally dominating yes that could be seen as a real positive and something to keep fans looking up to.

For those looking at conference strength the tendency is that having a small number of really strong teams makes you more noticeable in strength than a bunch of teams that are similar in strength but knock each other out of contention all the time.

The way college football does rankings and things of that sort really rewards having gaudy records even over weak competition than it does playing well but not having a dominating record against teams at your level even if yoru level is really high.

What I know is the ACC has 3 National Titles this decade
Big 10? 2014 Ohio State
Big XII??
PAC 12????

2014 Georgia Tech stomped the hell out of Miss St
2016 FSU beat a good Michigan team

2 Heisman winners: Jameis Winston, Lamar Jackson

Clemson has managed to create a rivalry with the dominate program of the decade. If it wasn't for Alabama, Clemson would probably have 4 straight championships

It's been a good decade for the ACC

Yes and No. The ACC has gotten better, but not because of NCs or Heismans. Those are individual awards. E.g., when UNLV won the hoops national title in 1990, that didn't mean the Big West was a good conference.

That said, the MC clearly shows ACC progress. It was a terrible first half-decade, but a much better second half. ACC conference ranking in final post-bowl MC for the past 10 years:

2010 .... 5
2011 .... 5
2012 .... 6
2013 .... 5
2014 .... 5
2015 .... 5
2016 .... 2
2017 .... 1
2018 .... 4

So we see that for the first six years of this decade, the ACC was bad. In 2012 it finished behind the Big East/AAC. In 2013 - 2015, it was last among the new P5 conferences.

But the last three years, it hasn't been last, in fact in 2016 and 2017 it was #2 and #1. Last year, it slipped to #4.

But notice there isn't much connection between championship years and conference strength. In 2013, when FSU won the title, the ACC was the last-place conference. In 2014, when Winston won the Heisman, again, last place. Now yes, in 2016, when Clemson won the title, the ACC was the second-place conference. But then last year when Clemson won the title, back to 4th place.

Bottom line though is that the ACC has risen out of the cellar among the P5.

Does losing the championship game 62-17 qualify as mediocre? Asking for a friend...

Depends on which conference you're talking about.

Not as much as losing to the last place team in the division you are running down. Know any teams that fit that description?

RE: ACC Coastal Parity
It amazes me that people always want to run down the ACC. Beside the SEC it has participated in in all CFP. In what is considered a down year for the ACC, six years ago would be a banner season. No arguement Clemson has replaced FSU as top dog. While not as optimistic about my Wolfpack next season, I do see many teams vastly improving next year. Norvell I think will have FSU back rivaling Clemson like the old days. Another team to watch out is for Louisville with Satterfield. One reason I hope the ACC follows the AAC in getting rid of divisions.

The ACC is a one hit wonder. You don’t have to be that good to run through and rack up wins in the ACC. Florida St had a bit of a run but now it’s Clemson. The league has all the depth of my 2 year old daughter’s kiddie pool. The rest of the league is weak and their OOC results expose them for what they are. Take Clemson out and the 2019 ACC doesn’t look a bit better than the 2019 AAC.

Right, the ACC should totally follow the Big Ten's practice of avoiding P5 teams OOC altogether. That way, if you don't play 'em, you can't lose! 04-wine

Dude, mediocre would be a compliment for USF this season. But we've beaten 9 different ACC teams in the past and have a 1-0 record against Clemson.

So if y’all are all that why exactly is USF in the AACk? Why are y’all hiring yet another new coach?

So if y’all are all that why exactly is USF in the AACk? Why are y’all hiring yet another new coach?

Ad hominem attacks on USF don't change the fact that the ACC Coastal (and, for that matter, the entire ACC minus Clemson) is essentially the AAC, just with the benefit of MUCH larger revenues. Removing Clemson from the ACC gives a mean Sagarin rating of 70.56. The AAC this year is 69.26.

And without the UConn anchor tied to our feet, that number for the "AACk" (sic) would be 71.62.

But to answer your question, the reason why USF (and Cincinnati) are not in the P5 any more is that the ACC needed to raid the Big East for 6 members over time or risk losing the only two good football teams they have (Clemson and FSU) in order to try to retain football relevance. Because nobody in their right mind would argue that Wake Forest or Duke are worthy of those football riches over at least a dozen G5 schools. So those added resources have enabled so-called P5 schools to continue to raid G5 schools of their coaches. It's a bit sanctimonious to then use that as a reason to scoff at schools against whom the decks are stacked. So if/when Memphis gets beaten by Penn State (in part because Norvell got poached), it will be no different than when Cincinnati lost because Brian Kelly got poached. Lather, rinse, repeat.

None of which changes the thesis, which is that the ACC Coastal is mediocre.

The AAC’s flagship school got beat by Pitt, so no, not “essentially the same thing.”

Only in the same way that the ACC's flagship lost to Boise State. Or FIU.

Maybe the AAC should invite Boise....oh wait, they’re not interested.

Try for FIU, they’d be an improvement over Tampa High.

Funny - we have a 2-0 record against FIU...

I wonder who else we have a 2-0 record against...

If not for basketball, Tobacco Road would be on the outside looking in at actual P5 football, too. Great that you can hide behind Clemson and FSU to prop up your gridiron mediocrity...
