Bowl games mean extra expense, 2/3 empty stadiums in remote small towns, and a chance to end the season with a negative record.

Ask the coaches in the other sports if they get to spend extra money for a .500 record. It is not a popular decision in most of the athletic departments at the mid-major level unless you win your leagues championship.

Popular or not, no other sport awards the 6-6 school with 3 hours of national television exposure.

On one level, it's totally unfair, but the reality is that all college sports are not equal. There is no equivalent to bowl games in other sports. Basically, it's a single game exhibition whose outcome is basically forgotten as soon as it's over. (Who won the last three Poulan Weedeater Bowls? Or Camellia Bowls? Who cares, except those involved?) It's not even a tournament that you can win. But it gets more national attention than anything any other sport does except the NCAA basketball tourney.

It is usually a nice trip for the players and they view it as a reward, as they should. This coaching staff will know how to view a bowl game as a big plus for the University and build upon it. I am not a potato eater so almost any other location I will try to make.

I'm tired of hearing of '1 bowl game in the last 45 years' - a bowl game this year would help to normalize the football program. I'm sure the history is a negative with recruiting.

This program has to move on from the 1 to 3 wins per year standard. KSU needs this program to finish 8 years out of every decade in the 5-7 win range and get to 3 or more bowl games every decade. This will move the program from 'horrible' to 'normal'.

These kids were sacrificial lambs sold to the highest bidder for 3 OOC games to help fund the athletic department. Considering it’s such a rare occasion, if they get invited they should certainly find a way to make it happen. The extra practice time, travel time and camaraderie building will be big as well as help in recruiting. When the other teams travel overseas in the offseason we hear how great of a bonding experience it was and would pay offf the following season and onward. This is a great opportunity for this program to turn the corner.

The MAC helps subsidize the trip. The kids focused on the goal of going bowling, if they get invited they should certainly go.

Don’t talk about other sports and records. When the basketball team is served up a schedule to guarantee them 20 wins a season by playing Hiram, Hampton, Detroit Mercy et al, the football team gets Bama, Wisky, Clemson, etc...to guarantee nothing more than a nice destination getaway for Joel, an asswhooping and a big paycheck for the department.

Exactly. The drive-by field hockey fans have disappeared!

Yeah, it would be pretty ridiculous to tell the players that have to play three unwinnable games to make someone else money that they can't play in a bowl because it costs too much and they only won 6 not 7.

Even if they had played a schedule that some here would want I would still say the team should go if offered. This team fought hard and assuming the players want it they earned that shot in my eyes. They fought for those wins at a place that does not see success in football all that often.

Love the comments and compliments in the ESPN article.
Accurate and deserved. Glad someone besides us is paying attention to what this coaching staff and these players are doing.

Agree, good article. But sad that ESPN provides this type of information, but the Plain Dealer (cleveland.com) completely ignores KSU.

Let's go bowling!!!

Also, Advance Ohio, the marketing and data company that runs/owns Cleveland.com and the PD, is a for hire click-a-palooza. I am fairly certain OSU/IMG pays for the 3 fanboy OSU beat writers, in one form or another.

The most egregious of their sins is using the AP to cover CSU b-ball, if they choose to run anything about them.

They are an absolute disgrace and a disservice to the area and community.

RE: What Needs to Happen...
Here's getting ahead of ourselves: I did check on flights and hotel from where I am to Boise because that is probably the worst bowl destination we could draw and I'm that kind of fatalist. I had to do two nights because of no flights returning after the game (1:30 game time on Jan. 3 so I figured it would have to be 6:00 p.m. or later flight out and there were none.) Costs ranged from about $850-$950 for flights and two nights in a hotel. No idea how much game tickets would be, but I assume they would be about the cheapest part of the trip.

Costs will vary depending on where you are flying from, of course. I'd be interested in see other costs from folks thinking about going. I didn't check from NE Ohio.

Are we getting a clean shaven Coach Lewis? I thought he and some of the other coaches were growing the beards out until we go bowling.

Let’s stop screwing around here and make some predictions of our own. What bowl do you think we’re headed to? I’m picking the First Responders Bowl.

I think/hope we go to the Armed Forces Bowl. Jan 4th-played at TCU stadium- was a sellout last year- lots of military families in DFW area fills the stadium...good atmosphere.
