MACtOAMU, I agree with you, but Cleveland.com would surely respond that they are just giving their readers what they want.

I have no reason for thinking it but I'm feeling the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl.

They sure would..... rationale being clicks mean public interest, which is self perpetuating data driven analytic BS.

But I digress.... Boca Raton would be nice for team and fans. Texas too, IMO...

These kids were sacrificial lambs sold to the highest bidder for 3 OOC games to help fund the athletic department. Considering it’s such a rare occasion, if they get invited they should certainly find a way to make it happen. The extra practice time, travel time and camaraderie building will be big as well as help in recruiting. When the other teams travel overseas in the offseason we hear how great of a bonding experience it was and would pay offf the following season and onward. This is a great opportunity for this program to turn the corner.

100% agree PolishHammer. The extra practice team is the biggest plus in going to a bowl game, as the staff gets more time to develop the players and work in new plays or wrinkles that they haven't gotten in previous seasons. And it helps with national exposure and recruiting.

Maybe. I must point out that if you and Polish Hammer stopped posting there would only be about 55. Of course if cscierth and I stopped posting about women basketball the sport would no longer exist.

This program has to move on from the 1 to 3 wins per year standard. KSU needs this program to finish 8 years out of every decade in the 5-7 win range and get to 3 or more bowl games every decade. This will move the program from 'horrible' to 'normal'.

Speaking of which - Kent State gets some mention on the ESPN website...

See https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...ayoff-more
Love the comments and compliments in the ESPN article.
Accurate and deserved. Glad someone besides us is paying attention to what this coaching staff and these players are doing.

Agree, good article. But sad that ESPN provides this type of information, but the Plain Dealer (cleveland.com) completely ignores KSU.

Let's go bowling!!!

Also, Advance Ohio, the marketing and data company that runs/owns Cleveland.com and the PD, is a for hire click-a-palooza. I am fairly certain OSU/IMG pays for the 3 fanboy OSU beat writers, in one form or another.

The most egregious of their sins is using the AP to cover CSU b-ball, if they choose to run anything about them.

They are an absolute disgrace and a disservice to the area and community.

They are a company (or should I say industry) about to go out of business. I remember when they covered Kent women’s basketball and took heat for covering a sport where 1000 people go and ignoring OSU basketball where 10,000 plus go. Much the same as the recent field hockey vs. football controversy at Kent. Name a media company that does not cater to its audience. Heck if they just published a paper or website for Kent State University students they would probably cover OSU football more!! Might the SEC conference get more airtime on ESPN because they are partners?

As far as Ohio St. football remember it funds the Kent Athletic Department. This year all you have to do is change their name to Wisconsin, Auburn or Arizona St.

I follow all sports at Kent State as much as anyone but let’s not pretend if Cleveland.com covered us it would be different. Heck Elton Alexander did it for years and no one ever spoke a good word about him.

Does anyone know when bids/matchups for Bowls have to be finalized?
Is everything dependent on what happens this weekend? Thanks.

The bids and haggling begin as soon as the games start to end, although you can bet most of the bowls are already lining up their ducks this week with all the possible contingencies.

Costs ranged from about $850-$950 for flights and two nights in a hotel. No idea how much game tickets would be, but I assume they would be about the cheapest part of the trip.

Costs will vary depending on where you are flying from, of course. I'd be interested in see other costs from folks thinking about going. I didn't check from NE Ohio.
Have been to Boise many times on business. Nice people , nice city but expensive to get there. Stadium in town , on campus. Hotels within a mile or two plenty of them. But not inexpensive
From CLE. I had to fly thru Chicago, Detroit , or Minn. Takes most of a day getting there. Full day coming back with time change.

Yeah, it's basically a full 3 day trip. I couldn't find a flight that with connections wasn't at least 8 hours, and some were 11+ hours.

Between all of the tweets and postings from the coaches and university I would be shocked if Kent isn't selected. It seems like they are just waiting for the "selection show" on Sunday to actually announce which bowl.

The chance of not going to a bowl game is probably about the odds ESPN gave us against Buffalo down 21 with 8 minutes left..... .3%

JN will need a miracle to come up with a legit Corp sponsor !
[/The game is the longest running cold weather bowl game currently in operation. The payout is $750,000, but teams are required to provide a corporate sponsor, purchase a minimum number of tickets, and stay at a selected hotel for a minimum stay. Because of this, 7–4 UCLA declined an invitation to the 2001 Bowl

RE: What Needs to Happen...
Things may have changed since that time. Im looking for payout amounts and I found conflicting amounts of $325000, $750000 and also $950000. Anyway, as for UCLA’s release regarding decking that invite back then:

“Dec. 3, 2001
"Last week, I had conversations with representatives of both the Humanitarian and Silicon Valley Bowls, as well as the commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, to state our interest in playing in both bowls in response to their inquiries about UCLA's interest in participating in the bowl.
"During those conversations, it was expressed to me that both bowls would require a participating school to purchase a corporate sponsorship, in addition to guaranteeing the purchase of a specific amount of tickets and hotel rooms. The purchase of tickets and hotel rooms are standard for any bowl game, but the corporate sponsorship was a new component. In regards to the Humanitarian Bowl, I was told the amount of the corporate sponsorship would be $350,000."
(The Humanitarian Bowl, which pays each school $750,000, also requires the purchase of 5,000 tickets at $33. In addition, the team must stay in Boise hotels for five nights and the band and spirit squads for three nights).
"When you combine those totals with other costs associated with a bowl, such as air transportation and housing and feeding of the players on campus, we projected a loss of about $300,000 to play in the Humanitarian Bowl, which would have come from this year's operating revenues. UCLA felt a fiduciary responsibility to at least break even in the bowl game.
"We never said we weren't interested in playing in the game, just unwilling to lose several hundred thousand dollars to play.
"We feel that the better long-term investment for $350,000 is in our new facility project. The building will include a weight room double the size of the current one, a new state-of-the-art medical/training facility to enhance the medical treatment of our student-athletes and new locker and meeting rooms for our various teams. These new expanded facilities will benefit several generations of UCLA student-athletes in the future."”

Well, I guess we are going to a Bowl. Joel has never looked out for any sport but football.

Exactly. Joel isn’t perfect by any means, but the constant bitching and blaming about him on this board has gotten tiresome, childish and boring.
