MyBB Initial Impressions thru 6 games
BY PLAYER

Jarron C. - Has struggled mightily, I think it's a combination of still not being healthy and not finding a rhythm in the new offense.
Jaevin C. - He can really shoot, and his defense has been better than expected.
McNeal - Very fast, has struggled with ball control, on ball defense, and shooting. Probably won't be starting much longer.
Scott - Has been the best rebounder on the team, but has disappeared at times.
Vogt - Good hands, good touch around the rim, limited mobility
Sorolla - Moves better than Vogt, but is soft on rebounds and on defense - hurt for 3-4 weeks
MAW - The game already appears to be slowing down for him. Very quick, decent shot, I think he'll be the starting PG soon.
Harvey - The talent is evident, but he has been out of control at times. As expected from a Freshmen. Hopefully the game slows down for him soon.
Davenport - Great motor, decent skill set. Out of control at times
Moore - Has hardly played, may still be a little hurt. He's been aggressive when he has played, but largely ineffective.
Diarra - Still kind of lost at times, but has shown flashes of potential.
Williams - About the same player as last year with a much better looking shot.

I would mostly agree though I think Scott's defense has been hit or miss. He's had really bad stretches. He got absolutely obliterated by Kyle Young against Ohio State. I think he's improved as the season has come on, though he still has been very sloppy witht he ball (as most of the players have been).

RE: Initial Impressions thru 6 games
Think the next 6 games are more important, then we'll have a better idea.... Can the Coach teach and are the players coachable.

I think some of the sloppiness is due to indecisiveness because of the new scheme. A moment of hesitation is just enough time to allow a defender to get in place to cause a turnover.

I definitely agree with this. I think they are learning and thinking instead of just reacting. It takes time to adjust to a new system and an influx of new players (plus your main guy not being on the floor a ton and when he is on the floor not being particularly productive).

+1, Scott is still playing defense as if we are leaving a shot blocker in the lane. He's getting beat by guys who are less athletic than him, and it's not because of a lack of ability. Brain cramps. RE: Vogt, Scott's comments last night after the game:

"That's not surprising," Scott said. "When he gets the ball in the paint, my opinion it's an automatic bucket. That's what we do. We go to him. Since the season started he's done what he's supposed to do."

I know comparing the NBA to College is apples to oranges, but the Indiana Pacers had a similar amount of roster turnover as this Bearcat team, and they looked like they wouldn't sniff the playoffs after two games, and yesterday in their 15th game they looked like they could challenge for the East. Hopefully we see a similar turnaround, sooner rather than later.

Roster turnover is bunk.

UC effectively only lost Brooks to transfer and Jennifer to graduation. We back filled with upgrades over the bench guys who moved on.

Good reviews; we need two point guards so the competition between McNeal and MAW is good whoever ends up starting. McNeal did not play last year so hopefully the inconsistent play lessens; he started the game last night strong but fell apart against the press in the comeback. We need to free Jaevin more often; he seemed to be a little careless in his passing at times after not taking the shot. His defense is better than expected as you stated; I feel Harvey is better and maybe might develop into a lock down defender. Keith makes many good plays but at times seems to get out of control on his drives and throw up a few low percentage shots. He needs to stay in front of his man on defense a little better; with his athleticism people should not get by him so easily. In his defense the offensive foul in the second half that took away a basket by him was ridiculous in my opinion. Our play in the tournament was very choppy but I think the officiating was also and led to some of the inconsistent play. Watching other games and tournaments this weekend I thought the play was allowed to be more aggressive than in the Paradise Jam.

They lost 2 starters, and their main bench guys. Their best player came in banged up and missed most the early practices. It's not just new guys, it's new guys in a new system, learning to play with each other. The freshman are all learning how to play college basketball...Three are doing so playing meaningful minutes. There's nothing bunk about it. There are a ton of new pieces on this roster learning to play together.

Apologist for the losing coach, dislike for the guy that wins.

Is this a generational thing? Lol

Which guy that wins do I dislike? I'm confused.

This coach is 5 games into a new job. There's nothing to be an apologist for.

What does that even mean? What sport do they NOT talk about it taking a while for new players to gel? The majority of our team is new players learning a new scheme who haven't played together before.

You also forgot Broome. Yes we filled in with new players but they're all learning on the fly including the other players that were already here.

I think the defense is supposed to have a rim protector, I believe Brannen has talked about having a center as a last line of defense. Diarra and Scott both seem to be given the freedom to roam off their defender and help protect the rim. Vogt tends to just stick to his man like glue and ignore what's happening around him. Maybe that's what he's supposed to do, but it's a large part of why I don't like his defense.

I agree in general. I'd quibble with a few things, I don't think Sorolla moves better than Vogt and I'd add that Davenport has done an excellent job hitting the boards. I'd also add that Moore is one of our better defenders off the bench. As well as that Diarra doesn't get lost on D much, it's mostly O where he struggles. I'd also put that McNeal shouldn't start ever again, but I have never been a McNeal fan - I think the best he can give is 10-15 minutes off the bench as a high energy guy, a worse version of Cane Broome.

Only a small part of Jarron's problems are physical and I am not sure they are getting resolved.

What are you basing this on? He was hurt a good portion of the offseason and is hurt now.

I agree a lot of it is mental but I think saying only a small part is physical seems off base unless you know something else.

Brannen mentioned this after the game. He said he drew up a press offense at one point and we missed a wide open man because they were trying to run exactly what was called instead of just reacting.

How about can't shoot FT's for crap. That's got to get fixed... yesterday.

Is 24 missed FT's in a game a world record? Has anyone called Guinness?
