Emory & Henry Wasps

Emory & Henry College is a private, liberal arts school in Emory, VA founded in 1836. They are a tiny school with only 956 undergrads. The Wasps participate in the NCAA at the D-III level in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Another mandated non-DI game by the D.C. Classic, our opponent went 17-10 last season and is 2-2 so far in 2019-20, but hasn't played any D-I opponents yet in that span.

The Wasps' best player appears to be 6-0 senior point guard Colin Molden, who leads the team in scoring (17.8 ppg), assists (4.3 apg), steals (2.3 spg), and three-pointers (2.8 3pg). The Wasps average 82.0 ppg but also commit 15.0 turnovers per contest.

Time to see how our rotations look post-Skaggs. Not sure if Gadsden will be back tonight?

I honestly think this is an addition by subtraction situation.

100%

It's no secret the shots weren't falling. It's also no secret that the shots were rushed and not in the flow of the offense. When you're taking rushed deep shots outside of the flow of the offense the battle for offensive rebounds gets exponentially more difficult. We all know what long defensive rebounds equal... quick points on the other end that don't allow our defense to get set.

A lack in hitting the shots compounded by giving up long caroms and quick points on the other end... No Bueno.

This would be an ideal game to get Gadsden back in the rotation. A non D1, expected winnable game where he can play a little more relaxed and free.

Sooner we can get him back in the rotation prior to conference play the better.

I'd love to see Gadsden back, but i'm afraid it only complicates our situation even more. Based on play, Okauru should be the odd man out, but the coaches are giving him a long leash. We have Toews, Phillips, Okauru and Gadsden in the 1-2 spots. If Gadsden returns, Toews and Gadsden would start with Phillips and Okauru off the bench. I also like Phillips at the 2 spot instead of PG.

It’ll be even more complex when Estime’ returns too.

Kind of a good problem to have, but yeah, there’s only so many guards you can hand minutes to.

In the record books it does. Also a school record for team points, I believe.

Brent Jenkins, with 52 % of the fan vote, named player of the game. Love it.

I know they’re DIII, but I still like the fact that even in a massive runaway win we didn’t completely cave on defense. Holding them to 66 while putting up 122.

Anyone that watched the game have any input on the defense?

Defense tightened down after the under 16 minute media timeout in the first half. I thought we played great defense the majority of the game. Emory & Henry started throwing in threes late in the second half.

It was the 39th time from 2010-2011 to the present that a player had at least 12 points, at least 11 rebounds, and at least 11 assists. He's the first CAA player to do that since at least 2010-2011. I'm going to tweet that at twitter.com/EvanJ3535

Was pretty good Middle of the game, but Early and Late they got some easy shots off. They had 19 points with 13 mins left in the first half when we went on a huge run and they had a drought.

Few takeaways for me getting to really lay eyes on them for the first time in person:
- Was good to see some press mixed in. I liked that sometimes it was a token man, sometimes it was more of a trap. Mixing it up i think is what we have all be calling for.
- Down side with the trap, is anytime the ball went to the middle there was some confusion. Three guys grouped together in the middle of the floor allowing for the outside pass for an easy beat. I think we have the athleticism to execute a press but it needs work. With our length against that team, we should have forced a ton of turnovers and we didn't with it.
- M2M D. Still needs work. Tough to say because we were so much bigger and stronger, but i'm looking at the fundamental pieces of it. Starting out the game we were terrible on the screen. It resulted in some easy looks for them and they knocked them down. Coach said we were switching on the screen in the postgame. What i saw initially was a whole lot of confusion. Some were hedging, some trying to switch, and a whole lot of running right into the screen which should never be an option. We seemed to get better with that as the game progressed. But something to watch.
-Dodd is going to be a beast. I fully recognize we were just able to bully a much smaller team. That said, I Can't remember in my 19 years around the program a kid that had both his athleticism and strength as a freshman. He is super strong for a freeshman.
- How about Jenkins?!?!? that was fun to watch
