WBB Game 4: ODU (3-0) @ UVA
This Sunday the ODU Monarchs will take to the road to play the Cavaliers of UVA. This is a return game as ODU lost 73-67 last year at the Ted. ODU's team will be older and more polished this time around. One thing that will be different is ODU won't face 6'8" center Felicia Aiyeotan this time. Last season Aiyeotan scored 10 points, 9 boards, 2 blocks in 24 minutes of play. She was recently diagnosed with a medical condition that ended her basketball career. UVA's roster is left with "just" two 6'3" girls on it's squad. Which is tall, but not the elite height that we faced last season.
The Cavaliers play at the John Paul Jones Arena. The Arena was build in 2010 and is a lovely venue to watch a game. General admission to a game is $4-5 a ticket. A lot of people don't realize that the Arena has a dining hall that is just for the student athletes that seats 325. Student athletes from all 25 sports gather for dinner from 5-8 pm Sunday through Thursday.
UVA schedule so far. 2-3. Home: 1-1. RPI rank: 90. SOS: 45. So far UVA has beaten the teams that they probably should have beaten.

Willoughby (18.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg) is the leader on the floor and in the classroom. She completed her degree in Global Developmental Studies in three years and is working on her masters this season. She leads the team in 3PA as well. So she is the one you have to guard. She was picked on the first team preseason All ACC team. Freshman Kylie Kornegay-Lucas comes off the bench to lead the team in rebounds. It's hard to get a feel on this team because they have played a challenging schedule so. It's hard to have success up in Connecticut. Most team's average usually declines in almost every stats sheet, for example. So with that in mind, I think that they are better than their overall stats to this point.
Toi is an interesting player. She is from Paris, France and hasn't played basketball for the last two years due to injury. So I have no idea what to expect. She likes to shoot the three. Lawson hasn't made a basket yet, but is more of a defensive player. Usually she is the first player who comes out of the game.

A lot of good things are happening with this ODU team. Strong on defense, they have a great assist/turnover ratio. They rebound the ball. They work when they are on the floor. We have multiple players who can score. And after the Auburn win, I think we have a chance of beating UvA. Tina Thompson's squad was expected to finish 11th in the ACC this year. In addition to ODU's broadcast on 94.1, if anyone wants to hear UVA's broadcast of the game they can tune into 96.5 FM (or 850 AM). Nothing wrong with Doug and Susan, but sometimes it's fun to listen in to other broadcasters to get their perspective on the game.
Either way, I think it's going to be a fun game for ODU.
