Divisions may be going away
SEC Looking to Change Scheduling

With the SEC looking to change and the ACC I bet you'll see divisions disappear and the conference championship games become the 1 and 2 teams in conference. Would be best for the American as well at 11 schools.

Great. It’s better for everyone.

Should have been done long ago.

The bylaws would have to be changed. Currently it's either 2 divisions for 12+ team conferences, or full round robin for conferences with less than 12 to allow a CCG. Not even sure the ACC would support changes unless ND joined in football, allowing them to go to three 5-team divisions.

Or they could play 9 conference games.

RE: Divisions may be going away
Divisionless is the future when a conference on the cusp of making the playoffs has a 9-0 conference record division champ vs a 6-3 conference record division champ when the 2nd best team in the former division was 8-1 in conference. Strength of record matters. PLUS getting to actually play your conference mates should be a thing.

All we have is Jimbo Fisher talking off the cuff for a few seconds at his weekly press appearance. And here is everything he said:

Quote:“I know they’re looking at some formats going forward that keep the three main and rotate five and all those things,” Fisher said. “I think it is good for your players, eventually, to play everybody in the conference. I really do believe that…. When you have conferences as big as you have now, that’s kind of the way it goes.”

No, the requirement for a CCG is not tied to the number of conference members anymore. A conference must either play a full round-robin or split into 2 divisions (as evenly balanced in number as possible) in which the members play round-robin. Although as the AAC (and the MAC and CUSA before them) has shown, the NCAA is willing to give out waivers for non-compliance if there is an odd number of teams in a conference.

Article doesn't even mention these things require NCAA regulation changes. So it shouldn't be taken too seriously.

RE: Divisions may be going away
The particular format (3-5) mentioned has issues. Hard to limit to 3.

UGA-Auburn, Florida, South Carolina (no Tennessee)
Florida-UGA, South Carolina, LSU (no Tennessee)
Tennessee-Alabama, Vanderbilt, Kentucky
Kentucky-Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Missouri (simply because someone has to play them)
Missouri-Kentucky, Arkansas, A&M
Vanderbilt-Tennessee, Kentucky, Ole Miss
South Carolina-UGA, Florida, MSU

Auburn-UGA, Alabama, Arkansas (no Florida or Tennessee)
Alabama-Auburn, LSU, Tennessee
Arkansas-Missouri, A&M, Auburn (no LSU)
A&M-Missouri, Arkansas, LSU
LSU-A&M, Alabama, Ole Miss
Ole Miss-Vanderbilt, MSU, LSU (no Auburn or Alabama or Tennessee or UGA)
MSU-South Carolina, Alabama, Ole Miss

13 game conference schedule. Not bad.

Exactly, we know there would have to be a rule change but everyone named SEC, Big Ten, ACC, American, and CUSA want this and that’s enough to get it passed. As if the Big Ten wants it the MAC will follow and I think the MWC would be for it as well.

Interesting

Now just out of curiosity, which two teams do you think should leave and where should those teams end up?

I like the 3-5 scheduling idea. You keep three most important rivals annually, and you host each of the other 10 schools once over four years.

I can see the ACC going to a very similar schedule, ditto C-USA. That might be enough for a majority to end Division requirement.

Interesting indeed.

Cite where the rule was changed since 2016. Conference with less than 12 members must play full round robin (unless temporary exceptions granted ala AAC).

There haven't been any specific proposals publicly made by any major conference. So the question is who is "they" that Jimbo refers to? The only "they" he would be in connection with is his own conference.

That and a 3-5 plan would specifically fit the current SEC model. Everyone else except the ACC is playing 9 games and I don't see why he'd have any information on what the ACC would be looking at.

RE: Divisions may be going away
This is what Ive been saying since summer. Anyone who thinks the AAC is the only one interested in a rule change allowing a divisionless CCG with an 8 game schedule hasnt been paying attention. The biggest recent hint was the fact that the AAC would be allowed to do just that for the next two years. Now...why would they allow the AAC to do something no other conference (even the P-5's) can do? Well...they allowed it because they had a good idea that everyone WOULD be able to do it soon.

RE: Divisions may be going away
While I am resigned to the fact that divisionless will probably be a thing in the near future and that for 14 member conferences like the ACC, SEC, and Big Ten a 3-5/5 or 5-4/4 scheduling model would be desired I still don’t like it. I think a lot of folk will be dissatisfied when someone gets left out due to an ugly tie breaker scenario and I like the idea of putting division winner in that game. With that said, recent history has produced some very crummy division winners.
