WBB Game 3: Winthrop (1-1) vs ODU (2-0) Education Game
Get ready ODU fans. It's time to get loud. It's time to get crazy. It's time to sing, and dance. And if there is time, maybe enjoy a basketball game. :-) It's the annual education game. If you have never been to an education game, its' a treat. I know last year with the bomb threat it was a let down. But normally, it's a game you want to go too. It's the energy that the kids bring. Fans, players...even refs if you talk to them...love this game. And honestly the game itself is secondary to the crowd. You won't hear the kids yell out "Box out". But they definitely do "Ice Cream and Cake" none stop.
This Wednesday the Monarchs will the play the Winthrop Eagles from the Big South. We haven't played Winthrop since the 1971-72 season where ODU lost 51-47. We played the Eagles as part of the AIAW East Coast Regionals back then.
It's almost impossible to talk about the Eagles without commenting on there head coach, Lynette Woodard. The former Kansas Lady Jayhawk player was the 1981 Wade Trophy Winner, scoring 3,649 points in her career. She is a member of the Women's Basketball HOF and the Harleem Globetrotters HOF. She become the first female to join the team in 1985. (ODU Royalty Nancy Lieberman toured with the team in 1988) As a head coach though, Woodard has her work cut out for her. In her first year at the helm the team went 3-27. Last year the team went 10-20.

The Eagles play down low to the extreme . This is why they average 50.5 rpg, which currently puts them 10th in the nation. They are not an very tall team, they just pack it inside. Whitfield is their leader, averaging 17.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg. As a whole they are not a very good shooting team ever. 20.5 turnovers pver game also is not great.

After her 35 points against Auburn, Sophomore Ajah Wayne is averaging 25.5 ppg, which is ranked fifth in the nation. That is a fun stat, since Nikki does stress "team" I think her average will dip as the season goes on. Overall I don't think that ODU will have any problems with Winthrop. Nikki won't let the team fall into a trap game. Winthrop should be a nice game where our bench gets some valueable minutes and we can run plays. A nice tune up before we play UVA. UVA's next opponent by the way, some team called UCONN. That is how they prepare for us.. ;-)
