Murphy’s injury hurt us on both ends of the court. The 6 Offensive Boards that led to 6 3’s was a backbreaker. I think the loss of MQB will be less and less as the season goes on. Fiedler looked really good until he wore down. In 18 minutes he had 7 boards with 3 on the offensive end.

That was a fun game to watch. A good defensive adjustment by UH in the last 8 minutes and the injury to Trey Murphy III really made the difference. Grimes is one heck of a player. Free throws hurt as well but this game was a blast to watch. I hope Autry/Tudor has this much energy in the building for the rest of the season. I think games like this teach the Owls that they can clearly compete with the best in CUSA.

The arena was sparsely populated (even for a Rice/Tulane game) because the game immediately followed a 1/14/12 Saints playoff game @ SF. The Saints game was quite memorable (and heartbreaking) for Saints fans, as the Saints scored a TD with 1:48 remaining to pull ahead, only to have the 49ers march down the field and score a TD with 9 seconds left to win (the teams traded 4 TDs in the last 5 mins!). Add that elimination to the Beast Quake elimination by Seattle in 2010, the Minneapolis Miracle in 2018, and the infamous non-call against the Cardinals in 2019, and the Saints have had some serious last-minute heart-wrenching playoff eliminations this decade. But I digress...

I was also at that Tulane/Rice game with my sister-in-law and her fiance (both Tulane grads). I remember being one of the few celebrating after Frizzelle's buzzer beater. Humorously (to me at least), with about 20 seconds left and a Tulane player about to take a free throw attempt, I yelled "NO PRESSURE" at the top of my lungs in the almost completely silent arena. The guy missed the FT attempt and I got a bunch of dirty looks from the Tulane people around me

I was at a Baylor/Rice football years ago in Waco. Big crowd, and as far as I could tell, my wife and I were the only Owls there. A Baylor player broke loose for a major gain - maybe 50 or more yards. Maybe a TD - I don't remember. But wait! Flag on the play. Called back. The stands are roaring with displeasure. When it died down, I raised my lone voice and yelled as loud as I could, "GOOD CALL!" I got more amused looks than dirty ones, but whatever, it was worth it.

I watched the last 40% of the game and really enjoyed it. To my non-expert eyes, UH looked more athletic than Rice, but Rice shot the hell out of the ball for a long stretch. Too bad Rice went cold toward the end. UH was 10/17 on 3-pt shots in the 2nd half and Rice was 10/19 on FT's, those seem pretty significant.

Last season, Mullins made 30% of his 3-pt shots and 72% of his FT attempts. This season he is at 19% and 43%. Once his shots start falling, Rice will certainly have a lot of guys who can score in different ways on different nights.

My preseason prediction was that Rice would go 19-12 (12-6) and battle for a bye in the CUSA tournament. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic!

Rice missed 6 FTs during that stretch (including the front end of a 1-and-1). Combine cold shooting from the floor with poor shooting from the line and you get a really bad stretch. UH also went 5/6 on 3-pt attempts during that run. A couple of the looks were pretty open, but some of them were strongly contested and UH was just hot.

Rice went on a 40-17 run over the final 12 minutes of the UCSB game to get the win there. We gave up multiple double digits runs in the loss at Arkansas. We're a very streaky team, both good and bad.

At this year’s MSU v TAMU game, supposedly the Aggies “tested” metal detectors at the gates, but interestingly, only the visitors gates. No cowbell problem at Kyle Field that day.

I love Rice basketball, but I have such pessimism concerning it. Nothing has ever "happened" to lead me to believe that we can be a meaningful "player" in this sport.

One NCAA appearance ever. It doesn't get much worse than that.

If Karlgaard wants to impress me right now, the basketball team needs to make at least the NIT, and the football team needs to qualify for a bowl game. Basketball and football are the most important sports.

For the Rice basketball team to make the NIT, they'd have to win the CUSA regular-season title and lose in the conference tournament. They're not going to get an at-large bid otherwise. Right now, I'd say that's unlikely for this year if for no other reason than how the schedule is set up (5 of the first 7 in conference play on the road, including Marshall and league favorites Western Kentucky right out of the box).

I think one of those other alphabet tournaments is a possibility for this year still. And who knows, if we can develop our bench a bit better, maybe we do have the capability of making an improbable conference tournament run?

That's a good post. We need to see progress. The history of Rice basketball is dismal. I need to see progress. Basketball is the "great equalizer." We should be good in this sport. There are great basketball players everywhere, and it only takes fifteen bodies to make it happen. Get it together Rice!

It doesn't take 15 good bodies to make it happen. One really good player with a decent supporting cast can turn a program around. I got my MBA at UVa in 1966 and the basketball program was dismal. UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest ruled the ACC and UVa was the perennial bottom in the standings. When Barry Parkhill arrived, that changed. He was exciting to watch, took over at crunch time, and as the crowds grew, the enthusiasm and expectations also grew. The team caught the enthusiasm from the crowds and the funding for the athletic program did too, as did the recruiting possibilities for the future. I was hopeful that Marcus Evans was the Barry Parkhill for Rice, but it didn't work out.

Hopefully, one of the Rice MBB players is that guy or the team meshes so well as a team that the program grows by leaps and bounds. Pera seems to be able to develop a team that plays as a team, with no one being the "star of the season", rather the "star of the game". As long as this continues, the wins will come and the recruits will buy into the program.

I was at that game. It was Pender's first season I think. They were awful.
