Bieniemy bows out of Colorado head coach search
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could have good chance at landing NFL head job next year.

Quote:Meanwhile, CU interviewed receivers coach and interim head coach Darrin Chiaverini on Monday, former Wisconsion head coach and current New York Giants outside linebackers coach Bret Bielema on Tuesday and Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian on Wednesday, according to multiple sources.

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun was also on CU's radar with one source saying his interview was scheduled to occur Thursday.

Sarkisian withdrew from consideration Thursday and will stay at Alabama, a source confirmed to 9NEWS.

But it appeared Bieniemy was CU's top choice from the moment Tucker flew off to East Lansing, Michigan. CU had tentatively hoped to reach a decision on its head coach by Friday, per sources, but it's unclear if their target date will be pushed back in light of Bieniemy's decision to drop out.

With possible exception of Calhoun, gotta say they’re picking off the “coolest names in football list”.

Karl Dorrell. I went to school with him at UCLA. Nice guy, he was head coach at UCLA for 5 years but has been an assistant coach mostly in the NFL the last decade-plus.

Colorado working toward deal with Karl Dorrell to become head football coach

Quote:Dorrell has been a head coach in the Pac-12 before, going 35-27 over five seasons at UCLA before getting fired. During that time, Dorrell had one standout 10-2 year in 2005 but largely had an underwhelming tenure with the Bruins, finishing fourth or fifth in the conference in all but one season.

Dorrell is familiar with Colorado, with two stints in Boulder earlier in his career -- 1992-93 as receivers coach and 1995-98 as offensive coordinator.

oh, well, looks like CU wouldn't touch Mr. Grinch with a 39 1/2 foot pole!

Grinch was the guy I wanted us to hire in 2017. We might have been able to get him then but he's way out of our price range now. With the level of interest he attracts, he would probably have been 2 or 3 years and moving on, but I think we'd be far better off for his having been here.

I think his track record pretty much speaks for itself as far as the quality of the guy. I kind of get the vibe that he and Riley want to stay at OU and win a NC together, then Riley's off to the NFL and Grinch steps in at OU. Watching a couple of their joint press conferences, they appear to have a good teamwork relationship.

Dorrell Named Head Football Coach At Colorado

Quote:BOULDER — Karl Dorrell, who has two previous "tours of duty" on the University of Colorado football staff, has been named the 27th full-time head football coach for the Buffaloes, athletic director Rick George announced Sunday.

George has proposed that CU's Board of Regents approve a five-year deal for Dorrell worth $18 million, in which the first-year salary would be $3.2 million and then increase by $200,000 annually, not including additional compensation for any of several incentives in the contract that are met. He is also proposing a salary pool of $3.8 million for the assistant coaches, which is an increase from $3.155 million for the previous staff. The Regents must approve Dorrell's contract, which campus leaders will present for their consideration at a meeting in the near future.

Dorrell returns to Colorado from the National Football League's Miami Dolphins, where he was the receivers coach for the 2019 season; he had just been promoted to assistant head coach last Thursday (Feb. 20) by head coach Brian Flores.

It's actually his fourth time he'll be establishing roots in the state of Colorado. In addition to his two previous stints as an assistant coach for the Buffaloes, he was the receivers coach for the Denver Broncos for three years (2000-2002) under Mike Shanahan.

High school move but a little bit of a Rice angle in there - Rick LaFavers has been named the new head coach at Ridge Point HS in Missouri City, TX. LaFavers was on the Rice staff under David Bailiff for a few years and has been a high school coach the last decade in Fort Bend County (an assistant at Ridge Point and then the head coach at Lamar Consolidated the last 4 seasons). His boy is a decent OL who I think will be a senior next season. He might get some D1 offers. Ridge Point usually produces several D1 prospects a season and the kids of two former Owls will be solid D1 prospects in a couple of years - QB BJ Emanuel is Class of 2022, and NG Dike Kalu is Class of 2023.

New GCC Interim Head Football Coach Tanner Farwell

Quote:GCC has hired former GCC football player and assistant coach Tanner Farwell as the Interim Head Football Coach for the Vaqueros. Farwell, 29, was an offensive lineman for the Vaqs in 2009-10 and an assistant coach in 2013-14 under recently retired head coach John Rome, and helped GCC advance to the Patriotic Bowl in 2014.

Glendale also is the birthtown of Kathy Ireland. For those who are sports fans, that name will ring a bell. For those who don't know, look her up.

This may explain why Worcester State is taking extra time to find a new Head Coach:

Colleges: Worcester State AD Mike Mudd upbeat despite missing out on Hockey East commissioner job

Well, that's one AD who thinks being in Div I is better than being in Div III.

His twitter account confirms: https://twitter.com/kale_pick?lang=en

Great name for a nutritionist!!

But he's known as a QB guru.

https://www.gctelegram.com/sports/202001...t-scott-cc

Quote:Pick should be remembered ... as a quarterback guru. From his first quarterback in Nathan Roarke to Ohio University and has become arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the country, setting all sorts of school records not only at Fort Scott but at Ohio as well.

Pick also sent Dalton Sneed to FCS Montana where he led the Grizzlies to the FCS quarterfinals and set numerous records at Montana.

In all, Pick coached seven quarterbacks to Division I schools. Including Justin Agner to Florida Atlantic and Gunner Sea to Indiana State. Jared Lewis (Delaware State) and Eli Odom (Texas Southern) also went DI.

. . .

In his three seasons at Fort Scott, Pick went 8-22 but the record is not indicative of how good the Greyhounds actually were. In his last season, Fort Scott started the season 2-0 with wins over Coffeyville and Highland. It was their best start in 12 years. ...

However, those games were forfeited by the Jayhawk (sic) and the NJCAA after hearing of an illegal player participating in those games.

According to Fort Scott, a non-conference school had contacted the NJCAA in regard to the use of ineligible player, who remains unknown at this point, and on Oct. 15 the NJCAA told Fort Scott of the allegations.

Fort Scott had confirmed it had obtained the release and transfer tracking form of said student-athlete. However, they did not have the transfer waiver form, which resulted in the violation.

Fort Scott obtained the form on Oct. 18, making said player eligible for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Fort Scott appealed the initial ruling of forfeiture but was denied through the appeal process. The only sanctions issued is the forfeit of said games.

According to Fort Scott, coaches and the player had no knowledge of the missing document.

Those forfeits forced a potential winning season down the drain and left them at only 2-8 this season.

RE: 2019-20 College Football Coaching Carousel
Fort Scott CC forfeited three games this year, all in conference. They would have been 5-5 (4-3). There was no CCG (nor would they have qualified for one) in the Kansas Jayhawks Community College Conference nor a playoff spot at fifth in the conference. Without the forfeit, they would have been one game over .500 in conference but not overall. Without the forfeits, they were 3-1 in one-score games.

Interesting scheduling note: their conference schedule was front-loaded. All five August and September games were in conference. Only one game in each of October and November were in conference. Their OOC was 3 of their final 5 games.

Southern Miss officially names Kubik as new offensive coordinator, announces rest of staff

Quote:HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss football coach Jay Hopson completed his 2020 full-time staff Thursday by announcing the hirings of assistant coaches Tony Pecoraro, Matt Kubik and Cedric Thomas.

Pecoraro returns to the staff as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach, while Kubik joins the program as an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Thomas as defensive backs coach. Pecoraro rejoins Southern Miss after serving as a senior analyst for defense last season at Kansas. Prior to his stint at Kansas, Pecoraro was the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Florida Atlantic in 2018.

Pecoraro originally joined the Southern Miss staff in 2016 as defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach and put together two Top 20 total defenses nationally.

Previous to a stint at North Alabama, Pecoraro earned his stripes during eight years of collegiate coaching, including five seasons over two separate stints at Florida State (2002-03, 2005-08). During his tenure at FSU, Pecoraro was a part of Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams in 2002-03.

Kubik comes to Southern Miss after working the last four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at ULM.

Last season, Kubik’s offense ranked No. 17 nationally at 460.9 yards per game, with his rushing attack holding a No. 26 ranking (207.3 ypg) and his passing attack 46th (253.7 ypg). In 2018, the Warhawks finished among the Sun Belt leaders in passing offense (second at 247.5 ypg.) and total offense (414.8 ypg.). ULM’s offense found its stride during a four-game winning streak, averaging 36.8 points, 220.5 rushing yards, 265.3 passing yards and 485.8 total yards per game.

Kubik has played an instrumental role in Caleb Evans’ development into one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks. Evans ranked as one of only three NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks to put together multiple games with at least 290 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in 2018 (vs. Georgia Southern and Troy), joining Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray (3 games) and Miami’s D’Eriq King (2 games).

Kubik came to ULM after a two-year stint as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Stephen F. Austin (2014-15). During his tenure in Nacogdoches, Texas, a total of nine offensive players earned All-Southland Conference accolades, including a pair of specialty awards.

Kubik, a three-year letterman and a two-year starter at quarterback at Louisiana Tech (2002, 2004-05) threw for 4,020 career yards and 28 career touchdowns. He was named the team’s Offensive MVP as a senior.

Thomas joins the Golden Eagle staff after serving as head coach for the last two seasons at his alma mater, UAPB where he led his team to a 6-5 record in 2019, improving the program’s win total by four from his first year running the program.

Football head Coach Moving On Up from the ODAC to the Big 12

Quote:The Ferrum College football team is not just in need of a new starting quarterback and a new starting running back.

The Panthers now need a new head coach, too.

The NCAA Division III school announced Monday that coach Rob Grande has stepped down as coach to take a job at another college (Div-I Iowa State, to be exact). Grande was 23-17 in four years at the helm of the Panthers.

Finding Grande’s successor will be the first big challenge for Ferrum’s new athletic director, John Sutyak, who began working at the college only two months ago.

“Honeymoon’s over,” Sutyak said Monday.

Iowa State hires Ferrum football coach Rob Grande as Executive Offensive Analyst

Quote:Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell also has a Division III background. He is a former Mount Union player and assistant.

Coast Guard football is getting a familiar face in C.C. Grant

Quote:"They all said, 'No way! No way!'" Bizer, a junior, said of the excitement of the group which until now has had Grant as a position coach. "And then one of the seniors said, 'You guys are going to do a lot of conditioning now.' Connor Schmitt said that."

Grant, an assistant coach for 21 seasons under head coach Bill George, who retired following the Bears' final game of the 2019 season, has been Coast Guard's co-defensive coordinator for the last 15 seasons and charged with working with the linebackers in particular.

The players see Grant as someone who dispenses "tough love," but does so fairly and with a purpose and respect befitting of coaching at a military academy. George said Grant, who will relinquish his position as head baseball coach to become the boss in football, could coach anywhere in the nation at any level. He said the Coast Guard Academy has been lucky to retain Grant for all these years.
