He did the tour at Bama and then did well at FAU. I still think it's risky hire, but Ole Miss needs to take some risks. Which is why it's confusing that Rice never seems to play them. maybe we've tried to before, but Miss and Miss State should be in our rotation along with LSU. Close enough to drive for their fans (and ours) and decent for recruiting for both, although, now with A&M in SEC West, it doesn't have the pull for them it once did. Still, if LSU will play us, we should try for the others.
Remember that Memphis game back in the day? Remember how bad they were, bouncing around at our (Rice's) level? Well, Memphis got after it since that game. The program is 57-21 since 2014, and the 2019 team is a school-record 12-1 with an American championship in hand and a Cotton Bowl bid waiting. Former head coaches Justin Fuente and Mike Norvell left for ACC jobs, and Norvell’s $2.66 million salary was among the highest among all Group of 5 coaches.
Shows what a nothing school can accomplish if they decide to emphasize getting better. Would like to see Rice go back to the Cotton Bowl as the Access team.
Maybe Old Miss should leave the SEC and join the Big 12 since they had no success in the SEC. The same should be said of Arkansas.

I tend to think Florida State may have out-hired Ole Miss. Norvell is young but very bright. Kiffin is a decent coach, but he comes with a lot of excess baggage. He is a risky hire, but as I said above, Ole Miss needs to take some risks at this point.
Quote:Drinkwitz, whose lone year of head coaching experience saw him take the Mountaineers to a 12-1 record with two wins over Power Five teams and a Sun Belt championship, is one of the profession's fastest-rising stars.
Drinkwitz has been at the helm for some of college football's best offenses throughout his brief career. The Mountaineers averaged 6.26 yards per play in 2019 and led the Sun Belt with 39.4 points per game. His 2015 Boise State offense finished second in the Mountain West at 441.5 yards per game, and NC State averaged more than 450 yards per game in 2017 and 2018 -- his final two seasons with the program.

Good news for Rice (in theory) is that after 5-20 in two years, Bloomgren probably wouldn't be in high demand as his replacement.

Traylor will be named UTSA's head coach, according to multiple sources. Just leaves ODU as the C-USA school without a head coach.

FAU also, unless I missed something.
Yep, was just thinking about the two original firings

In today's game, particularly at a G5, I think the name of the game is recruit, recruit, recruit. We have to take whatever is left over from the big guys, so evaluation to find the hidden treasures and then ability to sell them on the school are critical. We have the additional academic restrictions, but the way I see it, a good student who can't get a P5 scholly should prefer Rice over just about any other G5 (certainly over any other CUSA/SunBelt), so we should have an advantage there.
We need people who can develop them too, but pretty much any coach can coach, you just need strong coordinators to design good schemes and get staff buy-in. I think we have that on the defensive side of the ball, but I have to believe there is some tension between Mack and Bloomgren's pound the rock philosophy.
