The Delima of the Va. Pilot Sports page
A few years back, the Va. Pilot was losing money and in the coming years, several sports writers were let go. We had lost a lot of our local sports coverage with Jim Duci & Harry Mimium, leaving the paper. Now the most we see is Teel & Wood's major articles on Virginia and Va. Tech. I don't mine coverage, because they are P5. I do mine how much of the sports page is consumed by these two sports writers. The last I heard this was a local paper. How much has Ed Miller been sent to the curb? Last week ODU signed a 6'7 basketball player and unless I am blind, I saw nothing in the paper about it. Remember this is an off week for Ed Miller on football. Again I saw nothing in yesterday paper, about ODU basketball playing Saturday. Today a short 3 inch article written by wire reports not Ed Miller was in the paper. ODU leads the C-USA in basketball attendance and has a young football team coming back next year. I really believe if Teel and Wood were writing for the Richmond paper, most of their articles would be placed on VCU. I also wonder how many subscribers of the Va. Pilot, really are interested in all the major coverage that high school field women's field hockey got in today's paper. Several pages and the front page. Actually our sports page coverage, is now mostly Daily Press news that Teel and Wood would write. Does the Va. Pilot editor know, that ODU has the top attendance of colleges locally? It use to take me several minutes to read the sports page, now it takes a matter of seconds. I am not angry that tech and UVA should get coverage, but too much is too much. On another note is the TV guide in today's paper showed the shows for tomorrow night. As bad as East Carolina is in the AAC football & basketball, we should get some support. Our attendance is better and so are the teams. I ask David Teel and Norm Wood if these two teams are so much better in basketball, why don't want to play ODU. [/size]

The Daily Depressed and The Va. Pilot could care less about ODU. They cater to VT and UVA....then maybe ODU. I tried for years to talk to them about changing their priorities and they have always fallen short especially on the Peninsula.

Pretty much the entire reason I joined this forum a few years ago. This place is the best source of information and as you all know there is a ton of commentary.

Try being the fcs school in a town with and fbs school. Your coverage is not so bad when you compare.

I was thinking the same thing! I was like man we got a weekly spot on Wavy TV with live interviews and NSU, CNU, Hampton, etc get zilch.

And for that matter, compare what ODU gets from local media compared to, say, Charlotte in the Charlotte market or FIU/FAU in the Miami market or UAB and Southern Miss competing against multiple SEC schools or North Texas, Rice and UTSA in the DFW Metroplex, Houston and San Antonio. I think ODU does OK, though I think in the Pilot/DP things are rough with all the layoffs/buyouts they've sustained in the past 10 years.

ODU just hosted the Conference USA Men's soccer tournament in Norfolk last week.
Anyone know who one? There was no mention of it in the paper.

Marshall beat Charlotte 1-0. This is their first CUSA championship in soccer.

The Pilot has always covered UVA and VT with all the alumni in the area, but I've noticed quite a bit of features on William & Mary athletics since the paper was merged with the DP. I can't imagine there's that much interest in this in south side Hampton Roads. Seems like filler to me.

The Pilot and DP sports sections are merged; the same content runs in both editions. So that's why Pilot readers are getting more W&M and Peninsula HS coverage, and why DP readers now get more ODU and South Hampton Roads HS coverage.

Given the dramatic cuts in editors (and I think most of the layout/design is done offsite, or will be soon if it hasn't already), they probably don't consider it a prudent use of limited resources to create distinct editions for each side of the water. That's what happened to the Pilot and the old Ledger-Star; they split the newsroom down the middle and went at each other on beats like junkyard dogs, but eventually the sections started working together, eventually merging, and the L-S sports section was essentially the Pilot's, only with the West Coast scores in the scoreboard page. Then they killed the L-S because that's what you did with afternoon papers in the 1990s.

At one time had a subscription to the Daily Press ..... probably for 15+ years. Always hated their one sided politics, but tolerated them. Then when ODU Football kept getting zilch coverage, I wrote them. Got the middle finger, then I gave them the middle finger -- told them their politics were unbalanced and that they didn't do squat for ODU football coverage -- canceled the subscription. Then they called, begged, sent free papers, and tried to get me back. Won't happen and their rag will eventually go out of business.

There are too many sources for news, sports, etc. to put up with crap from one time monopolies .... they are becoming dinosaurs, on their way to becoming fossils. Network television is going the same way, irrelevant before they go into the death throes -- can't say I really give a crap. It's a pretty easy equation: "crappy product" + "poor customer attention" = "Going out of business sale".

The death of local journalism is not really something I would be celebrating. If DP/VP go down then say goodbye to any features on ODU. I don't really think we'll be seeing too much Monarch news on WaPo/NYT/WSJ/USA Today anytime soon.

I mean, there's also a bunch of other reasons why a lack of local journalism is really bad, but this is a sports forum so we'll use that lens for now.

RE: The Delima of the Va. Pilot Sports page
This merged "philosophy," born for all of the wrong reasons (Layoffs, mergers, sell-offs) should have come years ago. Like it or not, we are 1 region. As big a pain as the tunnel system can be, it is easy to get from southside to peninsula to Williamsburg. There is no reason NOT to be interested in what's happening on the "other side of the water," even in sports. But I fear it's too late. The private owners of the newspapers back in the day made their deals with the devil and agreed to non-compete clauses, which severely dissected the region in ways we've not yet recovered from. We are who we are, small-time, small thinking, undereducated and underpaid and unimportant in large part because of it.
Why 2 papers?
Why 2 airports?
Why 2 arenas?
Why a proposed arena at the end of a cul-de-sac in VB that a fair portion of the area population wouldn't go to? Couldn't go to?
Yes, the newspapers are dying a slow, agonizing death. Smarter people than me haven't come up with a stop-the-bleeding strategy. There's a story today about the owner of the Salt Lake City paper making it a non-profit.
It would have cost the Pilot about $750-$1,000 to cover the ODU-NE game the other day. If ODU was a top-25 team, that might have happened. It's not, almost never has been. You gotta earn coverage these days; even then it's done grudgingly. Sadly, the onus isn't on the paper, but on the program.
You should have been used to that by now.

If there is a demand the market will respond, news or sports .... I've written and published two different Op Ed pieces in the VP ---- not one speck of response or interest - I'm not sure how many people even read the paper - last time I will waste on that venue as an avenue to advance thinking. if there is no demand, who is reading in anyway. If there is a gap/perceived need, something will sprout up to fill it.
